Have just upgraded my home cinema set-up. The sales person in the store I got my receiver told me I needed a coaxial cable to connect my Blu-ray player to my receiver, as well as the HDMI cable. However the instruction manual for the receiver says I actually need an Optical Digital Cord. I can play DVDs fine on the player but as I don't own any Blu-ray discs yet haven't had a chance to try that out.

Which do I need? coaxial? Or Optical digital? I assume they're different cables and I can't just swap this one round?

Bloody sales people. Know nothing they do!

Reebop, what make and model is your receiver? Want to find out if it can do HDMI audio.

It's a SONY S-DH500.

At the moment it's got an HDMI cable from Blu-ray player to receiver and another from receiver to TV. And a coaxial cable from Blu-ray to Receiver too.

Like I said, DVDs play fine.

Nope it doesn't do HDMI audio for Blu-Ray. So get yourself a optical cable to go between the player and receiver.

Thank you.

So essentially Richer Sounds sold me a coaxial for DVD when they should have sold me optical digital for Blu-ray!!

Depends what are on the player and receiver? - many have both, so you can use either. Essentially ALL are digital coaxial, the optical input and output is simply converted from that.

If the coaxial works for DVD on your BluRay player, it will work for BluRay exactly the same - there's no difference.

My Blu ray only has coaxial output to attach to the receiver - I went into a local home cinema emporium to get a coaxial cable, and they didn't have a frigging clue what I was talking about and insisted that I needed an optical cable and thought I was mental
