I am humming and harring about getting the last 5800 at my local store.

I am not too technical when it comes to software, and I have been looking into the Topfield web site on the subject of transferring stuff from the PC to a box via USB, and it all look horribly complicated, especially the initial setup.

Am I worrying excessively, or is it really too much for a beginner?

Yes you are, no it's not. Even if you do get stuck you can get loads of hand-holding over on the toppy user site.

I did. The last display model, only the unit and mains cable, gave to me for £59.99. Hope it works now, but it has 12m guarantee.

Don't all Toppy's still come with a 2 year manufacturer warranty? Does anyone know?

Right, having got the 5800 from Currys, I find that the firmware is quite an old version, and needs to be updated. Having looked at the toppy.org page on "Toppy firmware updates" I see that it says "At present, you cannot update firmware from 64 bit versions of Windows Vista, as there is no compatible driver available". Unfortunately that is exactly what I have. Does that mean that I am stuck with the existing old version, which seems to be dated 2006, or are those instructions out of date?

Have a look over on the Toppy user forums where someone has recently written something which works with 64 bit machines to connect to a Toppy. Antares is the thing to search for:-

Just about to start some remote control testing ...

Many thanks for that. I registered on the Toppy forum a little while ago and was about to start searching there, but I hadn't yet got to it.

Despite the reassurances, it is proving a nightmare. The box has very old firmware on it, and all attempts to update it have, so far, failed. However, I have not yet admitted defeat, and am getting advice on the Toppy dedicated forum, so I will just have to be patient.

Trouble is that I have no idea what I am doing, and I am having to rely on the advice I am getting from some very patient users. As I say, I am not very technical and this is a very technical subject for me.

I have finally managed, with lots of help, to get the latest firmware installed, and things are looking a bit better, thank goodness.

The Toppy site does not suggest that you take the TF5800 up to the latest software update.
See http://www.toppy.org.uk/index.php

The Toppy.org.uk recommended firmware version is 5.13.65T for a TF5800 or 5.15.09T for a TF5810.

Yes, 5.13.65T is what I now have, it was previously something from 2006!

The TF5800PVRt comes with the buggy 5.14.09 software loaded, but it is recommended to install the patched 5.13.65T software from the Toppy forum.

I was in a similar position to the other new 5800 owners with regards to firmware. There was so much info on the Toppy Forum (and a lot of the stickys were from 2008) it was hard to know where to start.

If you want to install TAPS then it was recommended I just use the MyStuff installer which automatically installs the 'correct' firmware for you and a lot of useful taps and skins. So in other words it's a one stop shop. Because the machines from PCWorld tend to have the newer firmware on them the Toppy needs to be switched off and on after the update (in my case a couple of times) to get the new firmware to kick in.

I just downloaded the manual first from here

http://www.toppy.org.uk/~chunkywizar...ff62Manual.pdf

and followed the instructions in section 1.3 page 9.
