£1300-1700 | What TV?!

Hi everyone , first post so be gentle

I'll cut straight to chase so as to not waste your time!

I'm after a telly over 36", and was just wondering what you guys recommended, i've been reading around sites and can't seem to find a direct comparison between televisions, each tv is reviewed in their own right at their difference release dates as would be expected but upon cross-referencing the reviews I don't seem to be able to draw upon a conclusive winner, might just be my stupidity in play, if so, forgive me

I was planning on finding a nice price at a retailer such as currys/dixon/digital point and then using John Lewis' price match offer, gaining myself a 5 year guarantee in the process (must save £200+ on that alone!).

My budget is £1700(dont wanna spend the whole amount just because I can!) and any recommendations would be very kindly received!

There is a Panasonic one that always gets good reviews in magazines such as what hi-fi etc...

Can't remember the model number though... sorry!

You can't just say telly anymore! Do you mean old-style CRT? Cos these don't tend t go over 36" very often. At that size you're really looking at rear projection, which is pretty cheap these days, but people will tell you aren't very high quality images (altho u really need to make ur own opinion). Your other choice is plasma, and while you can get a plasma at that price, it probably wouldn't be very good. I'm still waiting for plasmas to become good AND cheap before getting on. plus there are a lot of offputting elements of plasmas.

At this price you could also get a very decent projector, and have a 7 foot screen (like me ) but even then you wouldn't want to watch everything on a projector, so its a not a good solution as a main screen.

I don't rate LCD screens that much, and i doubt you'll find many in your budget for the size you want.

Your best bet is just going to a TV shop and seeing what they have. I'm lucky enough to live near a Dixons XL, and they have a massive range of TVs in all technologies.

i was probably going to go with the Toshiba 36" picture frame 2 (36PW9308) model, despite what people say I still believe the picture quality of CRTs over others is quite clear, as far as LCDs go I think I might be able to fit a LCD RPTV but not an actual LCD

Certainly CTR beats plasma hands down.
