I am due to get my iPhone 4 soon and wondered if it still necessary to get a cover if the glass cover is very scratch proof?

Anyone tried it without and is still scratch free?

It's definately tougher than the 3gs, which I scratched on day one of owning mine. Mine is in my handbag with my keys and so far is fine. Although I think I will order a screen protector anyway.

I was biking last week and hit a pothole at around 30mph.

My Win CE gadget/GPS flew 100 yards down the road.
The main damage was dents in the ugly plastic case plus a screw thread breaking and the screen moving 1 cm inside.
It happened twice on the same day/ugly steep hill though it was the first time it has ever happened.
Surprisingly it is all back together fine now but needing a replan for the bike fitting.

At least it was not me doing the flying.

So you no doubt need the rubber band/bumper if you have an active lifestyle.

Maybe you should test your iPhone and report back then if you want specific answers.

Please ensure that your iPhone is securely fastened on your person at all times.

It would be extremely foolish to not secure it in a zip pocket of some description if you go running or biking.

The iPhone is made of very strong toughened scratch resistant glass, but the internal components have a high chance of being damaged if you abuse the phone.

Also, try to avoid biking as cars are better, safer, waterproof and in some cases also have designated docks for your iPhone in order to allow music playing through the speakers while securing the phone near the dash.

And never ever answer the phone in the rain with it invalidating the warranty.

Not incredibly we already know it is 30 times harder than plastic. Shattering information indeed.

Well obviously you should never let rain at any technological device.

I would like to issue advice for situations like this:

For Car users: I advise the owner to pull over when safe and answer / return the call.

For Bike Users: Should signal that you intend to pull over, break and come to a stop, hop off your bike and ensure the bike can stand. Remove all your safety overwear, remove your gloves, lock your bike to a near by bike restraint, find the phone in your pockets as you shift to shelter, and then proceed to make the call.

True. If it rains too heavy my GPS goes underwraps.

I'll leave my cycle helmet on thank you.

Surely if it's a waterproof device if you're taking it cycling with no cover?

No. Even the USB and SD slot are exposed
Showers are fine although it might be worth my while checking the edge sealing now that it is more battered.

edit - Not a costly device so it is worth the risk.

That's disturbing. Technology isn't meant to be exposed to rain. If your GPS device fails to work - it won't be replaced due to rain damage.

The Fugawi maps cost more than the unit which is long in the tooth now anyway.

Thanks for the link. I do wonder if it fits my 4" device.
I can't believe they do not give sizings.

edit - read the reviews!
Not just me. Superglue for some!.

This one might suit me.

oops - It says 'please note we have not tested it above 20mph!
I bet.

It does say fits to 4.3inches, and some reviews say it's quite tight. I'd prefer to use that on a larger GPS as I'd much prefer the device to be snug to the edges, and the screen fully visible (which yours would be) as opposed to the lower end of the spectrum where you might have it rattling about and what not.

Seems it flies off if you're own a motorbike and hit a pot hole! You're a cyclist though so I'm sure you pay attention to the road and don't break the speed limit . . . though you never know with some of you cyclists!!

My screen is also crap so the cover can only make it worse.
No sizing and my thing is (luckily considering) almost 3/4" thick.

It's probably about as scratch resistant as every other phone now.

The iPhone's behind on everything but software.

Is there an ignore feature on here. This is one fanboy I just can't take anymore of.
