If you got one (after the current owner had upgraded to a new phone on his contract) and put a standard O2 3G PAYG sim into it, would it work?

Yes it would. But I recommend a iPhone Sim only tariff, or at least a data bolt-on.

If you don't make a lot of calls O2's PAYG text and web tarrif is a great option.

A £10 top-up gets you 500mb data, 300 texts and £10 to spend on calls for a month.
