What is a 'personality' in music?
It's often said Leona has no 'personality', and that this can make her shows boring. When we look at established females i.e. Celine Dion or Whitney Houston, what do they have that Leona doesn't? How does their personality show?

Stage presence. Be that working the crowd or having a personality which keeps people watching. It adds to the performance.
It gets tedious when it's like "this is a song" "la la la, sing sing sing"... "this is another song", "la la la, sing sing sing". However, people who have seen her live say she has some personality, apparently ![]() I know she seems to have little personality in the (very few) interviews I've seen of her. She seems to sit on the fence and give generic, vague answers to many things. There was a sketch where Simon Cowell had his fingers on her shoulders and squeezed them if she replied with an answer he never liked. That kind of sums it up. |

It's hard to explain, but it's not just stage presence it's something you also feel when listening to the music, you can actually feel their personality/presence in the songs.

personality IMO shines through when an artist is singing a song they atcully wrote, because the lyrics are from themselves and personal.

To be a star, you need to be larger than life.
Not necessarily in a Gaga-sense, but you need a certain something that commands peoples attention. Whitney had plenty of uptempo's back in the day, and she always had a smile on her face. When she sang ballads, same as Mariah, she grabbed people by the balls with each note. They were waiting to see what ridiculous high notes she was going to reach or how many ad-libs she'd go for. Celine Dion's onstage banter is borderline humorous with the way she talks, but it includes the audience. With Leona, her personality seems more low-key. She stands and sings her ballads, note for note. It almost seems like going through the motions. There's no soul to it, she's not visually getting into the music and I think people see that. I've heard she puts on a theatrical show etc. on her tour, but until she brings that to her tv performances the world isn't going to see her that way. It also doesn't help that she continues to appear to be a Cowell puppet. |

Leona Lewis has always sounded to me as though she is singing in a language foreign to her, and that she has learnt the lyrics parrot-fashion without understanding a word of them.
