Andriod Apps updating
pixel_pixel

Does anyone know of an app that will update all my downloaded apps instead of having to update each one individually?

Thanks in advance

A quick search and the immediate response is that you can't, which seems a bit bewildering

I have done a search for such a app. The only reason I can think of is each app needs the users consent to update and a general app would not probably do this. But it could be made so easier to update many apps at once. Sigh.

Go onto the android market on your phone then click downloads. It will display a list of your apps and any updates available. Intact my HTC desire tells me of any updates every so often

I believe this feature is coming in Android 2.2, along with auto-updating of apps such as Google Maps and the ability to (officially) install apps to an SD card.

It's also important to check the rights that an app will have every time it updates. It's not inconceivable that something that's initially released in a perfectly harmless state could later be replaced with malware that sends premium rate text messages for example (see here)

I'd be concerned if such software did exist. Your software should alert you to an update and then you as the user should choose whether to install or not. Auto install is the work of the devil

User isn't talking about auto install.

They're talking about update all.

Ie lime iPhone. You have a list of all your apps the have an update. You can view what's new in the all - then update some and not others - or click "update all" and download them all.

It's a fundamental feature that I'm sure will be remedied soon

Yes I understood that - its still a duff idea. As the programs are in no way linked, why would you need an update all? In order for that to work you need to give something permission to do it all for you - dangerous Anything that needs an update that often isnt ready to be released.

Open source philosophy is "release early, release often" so since most of the Android apps are indeed open source, they do update fairly often. It doesn't mean they're not ready.

Update All and Auto-Update are coming with 2.2 update, but with regards the danger aspect, my understanding is that user is alerted if the update also comes with changed permissions - ie. if an update suddenly requires permission to dial numbers when it didn't before, it won't automatically update that app. That seems a fair and sensible decision.

As I mentioned firstly...

'Update all' is coming in Android 2.2 along with other update features such as auto-updating for certain apps like Google Maps. I thought it might be relevant to mention the auto-update too.

if you download an app called appbrain, it lists all your applications you have installed, and also puts all the apps that have updates available in 1 place, fair enough you cant click 1 button and update them all at the same time, but it is alot easier than looking through your phone to find out which apps have updates available

Doesn't the 'downloads' tab in the marketplace do exactly that anyway?

Some android apps are open source, the majority are not I've never released any source code for my companies application on android or iphone platforms. Android is open source, how many times does that get an upgrade? If you need to constantly update (read fix) your application, the implication is its not ready for market.

No it doesn't, it could mean that but it's more likely to mean you're an Agile dev shop that believes in release early, release often. IMO it's one of the best ways to develop software, release, see what the customer wants and thinks of what you've got, listen to the feedback, do work, release, lather, rinse, repeat.
