Why is their ice cream so expensive ?
I mean, nearly four pounds for a half litre tub !!
If they brought the price down, they would sell more of it.
Someone like me, who only earns a low wage, can only buy it when the shops (Sainsbury's etc) have a half-price promotion.

If it were £2 a tub, they would have to double sales simply to make the same return. In addition, they would have to invest in increased capacity, distribution etc which would push up the unit costs. So sales would have to more than double, permanently, in order for it to be a worthwhile exercise.

Then add to that the fact that the brand would be cheapened and lose the "premium" edge. People are "reassured" by expensive products, if the price were cut many would start to question the quality of products they previously considered the best.

Ultimately, enough people will pay £4 for a tub of these ice creams for it to be a sensible price to charge. If you can't afford them, I'm afraid you're no great loss.

If you dont know why their Ice-Cream is so expensive then I suspect your wasting your time and hard earned cash by buying it

Maybe Icelands £1 for a Tub Ice-cream would suit your pocket better and taste just the same to you , no ?

They have lots of different flavours too

So you've answered your own OP.

It's expensive because it has proper, quality ingredients in it. If you want cheap ice cream you have to have the stuff made from crap. It's called choice.

I think B&J's is overpriced but it is delicious and I buy a tub as an occasional treat so don't really mind paying a bit extra for it, I would normally buy it on half price anyway.

Wouldn't bother with the cinema or Domino's pizza tubs as they are a worse rip-off for a tiny tub.

I do think that the supermarkets could up their game a bit when it comes to their own brand ice cream - I've thought for a while that they should do a B&J's knock-off and sell it cheaper.

Asda do a few nice Extra Special ice creams that aren't as expensive as B&J's.

HD is delicious, not so keen on ben and jerry's though. I rarely eat ice cream, but when I do I want quality stuff not the artificial cheap crap.

Ben & Jerrys' isn't overpriced as clearly that is what customers deem the product to be worth, you even say yourself that you don't mind paying a bit extra for it! Why are people convinced they know more about how to sell products than some of the worlds biggest manufacturers and retailers, Unilever in this case?

Maybe you can't afford to buy it all the time, but as I explained earlier, the manufacturers don't neccessarily want you to do so.

This is right up there with your post about the World Cup. I am sure Haagen Dazs and B&J's make plenty of profit.

Lots of things are a lot cheaper in the U.S. than here for many differing reasons.

I've done your work for you. A tub in the U.S. is $5.99 on Netgrocer.com. ASDA sell the same tub for £3 which is actually cheaper.

That's a special offer, I am sure Asda sell it cheaper when they have a special offer.

Had to look up "netgrocer" to see what it was. You seem to have chosen what looks to be a high priced nationwide delivery service? I think between $4.50 and $5.00 is about 'average' for premium ice cream, but they frequently are on sale. Prices of course vary across the country, and since practically everything has to be shipped by boat to Hawaii, we pay higher prices than those on the mainland.

anyway, I buy my Haagen Dazs at my local supermarket for $3.50. I just bought Pineapple Coconut and Vanilla Swiss Almond tonight for the 3 day weekend as it was on sale at that price. Supermarkets would have it cheaper and the avg price non sale price is about $4.99.

Tescos vanilla and toffee icecream (1 litre tubs, two for £3 often offer) is lovely. Give it a try

It's cheaper to buy because it's cheaper to sell.

For a start, the price in the UK includes VAT at 17.5%, so at £4 a tub, the retailer is only going to see £3.30. My experiences of the US are that sales tax is generally not included in shelf prices.

Property in the US is cheaper, energy is cheaper, distribution is cheaper and the raw materials used to make the product are cheaper. In fact, where is Ben & Jerry's sold in the UK manufactured? If in the UK, there's the additional cost of importing ingredients or there is the cost of shipping the product from the US or wherever it's manufactured.

At the end of the day, I suspect both retailer and manufacturer are left with roughly the same profit margin in both the UK and US markets, despite the difference in price.
