There isn't really a market for such MP3 players. Especially if you are limited to WiFi areas only too.
And limited to only contact other people with iPhone/Ipod's

iPhones and Touches are hardly unpopular. The FaceTime protocol can also be implemented by other manufacturers if they want.

I know its nothing new to a phone, however how many mp3 players can do skype video calling? = none
Yeah because it's completely pointless, nobody wants that

I have a 64GB iPod Touch. I love it. I think it's worth it.

They may be popular but I bet more people have 3g phones with video calling feature that can call any other phone not just the same make and also from any where not just when both parties have wifi connection.

Take for example Fring, a multi platform app on the iPhone & Android phones.

Due to the nature of the compression it uses and the badly written app, it crashes and quality is rubbish over 3G and even lags over Wi-Fi.

That's why Apple have lauched FaceTime as an open framework - so any manufacturer can implement it in their phones, but will seek to guarantee a decent call quality, rather than having phones supporting all different manners of codecs.

They also would like it to work over 3G, but that's down to the network operators because of the vastly improved quality, the bitrate is marginally higher and the operators don't want their networks overloading.

How do the official skype apps compare?

Having used Fring for an iPhone4 > Nokia 5800 video call over wifi, I can say that it truely does stink. Really terrible.

Hi,
It's my birthday soon and I was wondering whether to ask for an iPod Touch

I currently have an 4GB iPod Nano 2nd Gen, which is filled to the point of bursting, so I am in need of a new music player

is the Touch worth it? and if yes, what size should I get? Price is kinda an issue, as I'd have to save for a bit as well
I'd use it for mainly music and apps, but with the odd tv show or film on there

Thanks in advance for any useful advice

EDIT: I just heard there's going to be a new iPod Touch in Sept - what features would this have?
I prefer the old/current iTouch, I'll be getting the 64GB iTouch as soon as the new iTouch is launched.

Personally I like the look of the old iTouch/iPhone, the new iPhone 4 doesn't appeal to me.

Install suitable apps and the iTouch can do anything a PDA could. Many of them are free (or have an ad-supported free version) so it needn't cost anything extra to really unleash the full potential of it.

YES YES YES, best purchase I have ever made, I picked up the 1st gen a few years ago so might have to get the new version if it's improved

looks like I'm in the minority here but I've been really disappointed with my iPod Touch the battery life's not great, I find that it can get really unresponsive especially when I wake it up from sleep, I always have it on shuffle and it constantly forgets where it is in the song-list and just plays the next song alphabetically, and despite trying my best to keep it pristine it's got a huge scratch across the front... yep the apps are great but I've got an Android phone so not too bothered about those. It's also a bit on the large size (but that's just personal preference - carrying around my HTC Desire and my iPod Touch is a bit much for my bulging pockets). I'm hoping for a 32gb Nano in September that I can trade in for.

You are in the minority, anyone who knows tech will tell you that there's no other media player that comes close to the iPod touch.

Just to clarify you mean the iPod touch by Apple, not the iTouch which is a media player from Pasen:

Naming devices correctly is important

Well done for finding that device. If I search for 'iTouch' all I get is the ipod touch.

i DO know tech, and in MY opinion, for the reasons listed above, I regret "upgrading" my Nano and will be going back to one when the new model is released.

The iTouch is definitely a scratch magnet especially the shiny back. I have a silicone case & screen protector for it, and would recommend.

It's a toy. I want my mp3 player to have space for music. Not games.

If I want to play games I use a PSP or gameboy lol

I would choose my 80gb 5G over an ipod touch anyday.

And i know tech

I know Tech too and the iPod Touch is great. Fantastic Apps. Great UI. I bought a 32 Gig 2G iPod Touch back in 2008 and it has been super. I use it mainly as a PDA (Palm user since 2000) and get about 4 days battery life in normal use. On a long haul flight it gives me about 5 hours of video.

An absolutely super device, it has replaced my laptop for many uses.

Go for the largest size you can and there should be a new one out in October.

This owner highly recommends it.

If you don't have or can't afford the contract on an iPhone then the Touch is TOTALLY worth it. If you can afford the iPhone get that.

I liked the iPod Touch when I had it, but you're rather deluded if you think that anyone who knows tech would automatically think that the iPod Touch is one of the best media players around.

Its good, but not great. Codec support is limited, sound quality is very definitely *not* the best around. But its good enough for most people.

The iPod Touch has been the best rated media player by many people and many reviewers.

I find mine excellent on many levels and that is good enough for me.

It just works is what will appeal to the masses, rather than something where they have to drag and drop files onto the device. I like the simplicity of it yet also how powerful it is when you use it to its full potential with the plethora of apps available for it.
