Air America is on ITV 1 HD now, and was made in 2.35:1. I'm not near a TV, but I don't suppose ITV are broadcasting it properly?
I think it's from the Universal catalogue which includes Studio Canal I think, none of that has ever been in 2.35:1 on ITV. The only hope is if it's an MGM, Warner or Buena Vista film which ITV got the HD rights to more recently.

Well, they secured the HD rights to the Bond films (by MGM/Sony) recently and don't show them in 2.35:1. Same with The Matrix and they are Warner Bros.

Air America was made by TriStar (a division of Sony IIRC) and I can't say I recall ITV ever having shown this movie before, and certainly not in HD, so this should be something they got the rights to recently.

It was shown cropped to 16:9 but went to 2.35:1 during the end credits.

Oh well, bang goes that theory then. Looks like the few occurences where they used 2.35:1 was either a mistake or a test to see if they got complaints, maybe they got a couple of complaints and thought oh well that's it then.

I think the distributor is Studio Canal in Europe which is or was a Universal subsidiary.

whats the point in "forcing" the nation to go out and buy a widescreen tv, and then filling half the screen space with black bars!!!????
Probably best you keep quiet on this subject I feel.

Yes, Air America looked lovely in HD, was released through Studio Canal and Tri Star and was in 2.35:1 for the opening logos and credits, but went to full screen 16:9 after the opening credits. Shame.

Recently they had Nevada Smith, from 1966, on ITV4 in 2.35:1. They really are as bad as Five at getting this right on a regular basis though.

Two films in a row on Channel 5 that started in 2.35:1 for the opening credits, then zoomed in for the rest of it.

Is it only the newly acquired HD films Channel 5 leave uncropped? Why can't they leave SD films uncropped too?

BBC One HD showing The Mission in 2.35:1 with 5.1 sound but not in HD. I really hope there is not another cr*p policy that says BBC funds can't be justified in buying HD film rights, I think with the billions of income the BBC has they can just about afford it....

Cutbacks, though. They nearly couldn't afford The Mission, and were due to show The Task instead

I'm here all week....

Anyway, the 2005 film Goal! is on BBC2 in 2.35:1 at the moment. However, it's a 12-cert film, so at 5pm is most likely to be cut for something. It's not a film I've seen, though.

That said, most 12-cert films for years have just been PG-rated films with a single f-word in as a PG in the US means box-office death. Don't know if that applies to this one.

You beat me to it!

According to the BBFC website the film contains "moderate language" which doesn't mean the "f - word".

I didn't see this, apart from flicking past and seeing the ratio, and I'm not one for watching a whole film on Iplayer, but the Tim Roth film, Youth Without Youth was in 2.35:1 last night on BBC2.

At least it doesn't cover the actual video in 2.35:1, picture is much sharper & more detailed in HD.

Very true. I think i could take it if it was much more transparent.

Didn't see that earlier, but I know C4 have shown it that way before*.

Later this week, Five are showing Blade and Men of Honour, both of which have been in 2.35:1 on C4 but whether Five will show those versions is unknown yet.

*Technically, the PG version is censored as a 12-cert came out, then parents complained as it was a bit too strong for their sensitive little spawn, apparently, and the Fox relented and released a PG-rated version, which is the one that's gone on to exist over here ever since. They've never let them go out side by side, despite earlier allowing exactly that for Terminator 2 on different formats (video and laserdisc) and Die Hard 2 (one as a 15-cert pan-and-scan video and on as an 18-cert widescreen video)

(geek mode off)

The film, and it's 30 minutes of deleted scenes, which include all the "strong stuff" that parents didn't want in a 12 rated film were passed uncut by the BBFC in 2003 at PG.

So, the DVD version you can get now, although the scenes aren't inserted back into the film, has everything on it, and it's PG.

Thanks for that. Do you have a link to that somewhere as I couldn't find anything re-rated in 2003 and the most recent DVD I can find is from 2001. Ta.
