I only saw a bit of it on C5+1, but it was an appalling crop to 16:9. Certainly not the HD OAR glory Channel 4 have shown before.


OAR on BBC2, albeit in Dolby Pro Logic on BBC2 HD, not DD5.1. However, is this an OAR premiere?

Not sure if either one of 'em has been screened OAR before, but both THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH and THE WACKNESS were shown that way (one after t'other) on BBC 2 last night.

I remember The Wackness has, on BBC1 in 2011 (it stuck in my mind as I was surprised) but I'm thinking Bowie's film was an OAR premiere.

Premieres of Another Year (C4) and Drag Me To Hell (C5) both showing in OAR now.

DRAG ME TO HELL premiered OAR on C5 last night, but MY SOUL TO TAKE (same channel) was cropped/reframed.

Different studios, and I have heard (in relation to HBO) that Lionsgate contractually oblige studios to broadcast OAR. Don't know if there's any truth behind that though...

Looking down this weeks list,it seems that Tooth Fairy was shown cropped but it never appeared to be a film that was when watching it

Am I alone in thinking this was crap?

Wyatt Earp ITV 4 virtually full OAR

Virtually full? What ratio was it roughly, please? I see it's on again tonight at 10pm so I'll take a look.

I've heard this said a few times throughout this thread, but my experience is somewhat different. They may well oblige TV companies to broadcast material OAR, but quite a few of their home video releases (of scope films) have been cropped/reframed to 16:9. I just wish I could recall the titles!! I recall, because it became really quite frustrating to see this happen so many times. But as I say, TV broadcasts could be handled differently.

DVDfever got it right when he said it was 1.85:1. I had a brain-fart and mixed it up with another film starring The Rock (the title of that one escapes me, too!).


Empty-headed rubbish, I agree. A good idea, wasted (Korean genre filmmakers could have really made something good of it, I'm sure). But Justin Long is always worth watching, even in mediocrities like this (and his career has been largely - though not completely - wasted on similar lightweight material).


It was roughly 2.39:1 (not 2.35:1), the full enchilada.

Wyatt Earp - It looks more 2:30 than 2:40, it's worth recording for the collection if you dont want it 100% widescreen. Maybe my TV settings are not right.

No-one died. (well except in the film, probably) So we'll let you off

Yep, it was the full thing. Just had a look now.


ITV short change on the resolution, so Wyatt Earp is effectively windowboxed on Freeview.

I've realised that, for some unknown reason, while most main channels broadcast in SD in 720x576, the ITV channels broadcast in 704x576. No idea why, but when I want to archive something to DVD, I have to convert it to 720x576 which is a royal pain.

Have you tried DVDPatcher?

It can change the video headers in mpeg2 video allowing you to make a DVD out of non-compliant Freeview resolutions without having to re-encode, so it's virtually instant.

(Unless otherwise indicated, all films in the following list were projected at 2.35:1 prior to 1971, and at 2.39:1 thereafter)

Thanks very much for that. I remember someone once mentioning it to me many moons ago (before I had a need for it) but, yes, it's instant.

Post #3 by mclark_au sums it up:

"Exactly what I needed to allow DVB-T mpeg2 streams to write to DVD with Ulead DVD Workshop.

Only need to patch the first header to make UDWS think the mpeg2 file is compatible.

Allows you to edit mpeg2 bitrate header value from the 15k or so sent in DVB-T to something more friendly like 8k."

I use the same program (well, UDWS2) and while it's way out of date now and no longer supported, it's still a great program.

It never worked in Vista, but works in W7. The only downside is that you can't hear the files as you play them, but I generally just need to add chapters at ad breaks, around opening/closing credits and then approx every 5 mins inbetween.

While I'm just archiving TV material, it's a real bug bear of mine that most DVDs and Blu-rays, of movies, go for a maximum of TWELVE chapters. Even for the Blu-ray of the near-3hr extended version of The Big Blue!

I use TMpegEnc for my authoring. I've found it's best to patch the file from 704x576 (or 544x576) to 720x576, then open it with your authoring software, create your menus and chapters, then patch it back to its original resolution and finally let your authoring software process it into dvd vob files in a VIDEO_TS folder. Then burn as normal.

Are we allowing people to make posts in foreign languages now?

Just tried it to create menus and chapters, once I'd changed the headers to 720x576 and Ulead DVD Workshop 2 didn't really want to know.

When I went to add the first chapter on a file, at around 20 seconds - after the opening credits of a programme had finished, I typed in 20 where the second go and............................ it took forever to react. Even then it didn't want to save the chapter. I don't think it likes what I did to the file, even though it no longer bloats it to a bigger size when trying to convert it.

I think I'm going to have to go with converting each file, alas

The Switch (C5) - in OAR now. From Miramax - are they normally a good bet for OAR films?

According to the BBFC The Switch is actually distributed by Lionsgate in the UK, who have recently been good with OAR content...
