HONEYMOONER (BBC 1) and NEVADA SMITH (ITV 4) also screened OAR on TV last night. I missed THE ROAD on BBC 2, so not sure if that was cropped or not. Anyone out there know for sure?

Ta very glad.

Don't recall if THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER has been screened by C4 before, but it went out OAR this afternoon, possibly for the very first time on terrestrial TV.

What's that I was saying earlier about Lionsgate not always being reliable when it comes to OAR presentations on TV and home video?...

Just watched my recording of PRIDE, which premiered on Film 4 a couple of weeks ago, and it was cropped/reframed (take your pick) to buggery. I liked the film enough to order the DVD, which I suspect may be equally cropped, though we'll see when it arrives. Online reviews confirm the US DVD is OAR.

DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME and THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY AN INCREDIBLY LONG MOVIE TITLE both played OAR the other night. Anyone know if 3:10 TO YUMA and/or THE NEXT THREE DAYS played the same way?

Answering my own question: THE NEXT THREE DAYS was OAR, while 3:10 TO YUMA was not.

Surprised to see THE BOOK OF ELI showing OAR on 5*. Didn't that premiere on C5 in cropped/reframed format?

Even the ads for The Next 3 Days were in 2.35:1 on Channel 5, so would have been a surprise if the film was not!

Saturday (15 June)

Despicable Me (ITV 1) [3-D] [1.85:1]
I was sure I'd seen a clip of this in 2.35:1 at some point when I was looking at new TVs last year, and one of them w as showing this film.

BTW, while IMDB says 1.85:1, there's something else I'd like to ask. When a film format says 2K, does that mean twice usual HD resolution? I ask because 4K is quoted as being four times usual HD resolution, so that may sound like I've answered my own question, but is 2K really enough for a big cinema screen?

Digital Intermediate (2K) (master format)

All that said, ITV's transfer looks slightly less at 16:9, but on my plasma TV, in both HD and SD there's a very slight border all the way round. Less than the difference you'd get between 16:9 and 1.85:1, if you were just looking at the top and bottom, for example, but a slight windowboxing, nonetheless.

BTW, does anyone know if ITV HD on Sky has films in DD5.1? I know they don't on Freeview.

Same question for C5 HD (although I know there's no Freeview option for that HD channel)

2K is 2048 x 1080 pixels, which is slightly wider than but the same height as HD television and Blu-ray resolution, which is 1920 x 1080. This is because the most common cinema aspect ratio is 1.85:1, and widescreen TV is 1.78:1 (16:9).

4K is 4096 x 2160, i.e. twice as wide and twice as high, or four times the size, as 2K.

Just to confuse everyone, cinema digital resolutions refer to the pixel width (2K, 4K) while TV ones refer to the height (1080p, 1080i, 720p and 576i which is SD PAL).

But if the PS4 has 4K support, is that referring to the cinema's idea of 4K?

And if a film is shot in 2K, does that mean it's basically the same as 1080p at home?

The ITV HD feed is the same on Freeview and Sky.
Ta for the info. Anyone know about C5 HD, please?

The DVD version of PRIDE was, indeed, cropped/reframed to 16:9 (the US version is 2.39:1).

The version of BURIED which premiered on ITV 4 last night was the same cropped/reframed version currently available on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK.

Meanwhile, NO STRINGS ATTACHED was OAR on BBC 1, though I haven't checked my recording of SKELETONS (BBC 2) to see if that was OAR, too.

I would guess so, but I don't know anything about the PS4. I would wonder if there is any 4K material to play on it, and I'd also imagine 4K televisions and broadcasting are a long way off. Even the 90-inch TV set that Sharp have just launched only goes up to 1080p.

4K cinemas are in the majority compared to 2K, though I believe the Vue chain have fitted out their screens with 4K projectors.

There are still films being made in 1080p;or 2K, and yes they would be the same resolution or slightly wider than you get at home. The most common digital cinema cameras these days are the Arri Alexa (2.8K) and the Red range - the Red One is 4K and the Red Epic goes up to 5K.

It's definitely just starting out, when it comes to content for the home, but I think Sharp's TV is ridiculous given that LG already have an 84inch TV that can do 4K.

Thanks for the info. I'm feeling rather cheated that the cinema image has the same resolution as the TV.

Most Cineworlds have gone 4K now as well. They used to tell on their website, but they changed the design and the feature was removed.

Sorry, that should have said "minority" not "majority".

I wasn't aware of the Cineworlds: I have one here in Aldershot. I did a quick search but couldn't find if that was 4K or 2K.

You should see the one in Stockport. Looks so run-down, I doubt they've even progressed beyond Dolby Stereo!

its interesting seeing all the different formats, but im just wondering what is the 2k or 4k equivalent for 2.4:1 or scope format?
