Sorry for not reading every page, this may have been mentioned.before..I don`t `mind` a movie in 2.35.1,I would prefer it in 16.9 so I have a full screen.
What annoys/bothers me is the growing numbers of ads which are in 2.35.1 and occasionally inserts into tv progs(I started a thread about this elsewhere)..

STOP IT..we have 16.9 aspect ratio TV`s..use all the screen!!!.

Why should the black bars bother you when the area around the cinema screen is black in the cinema? The problem with zooming HD into 16:9 is what you are then getting is not really HD, you can see this on ITV1 HD where only the movies originating in 16:9/1.85:1 are really sharp.

I don`t go to the cinema

My `moan` was about tv beginning to use this ultra wide screen feature in places other than in movies

I've noticed Five have shown the odd few, BBC HD do it and tonight Watch are showing Stargate in full widescreen.
Is it down to cost that few channels show them or is it the networks believe the viewers want 16:9 cropped programmes?”

All new TV prints nowadays would presumably be OAR. Anyone not showing such either a) still has a licence to run on a non-OAR version or b) can't obtain an OAR print due to the source elements not making it possible.

Thankfully, you're in the minority when it comes to home cinema. See these pages for examples of why the full ratio is better:

Well, they do that to look trendy, that's all. Same with pop videos.

Then use the settings on the TV to crop the picture or, better still (to quote someone else's post I once read on here), put it back on the box, take it back to the shop and give it to them, telling them you really have no right to use it.

(Almost a quote. The original one was far more derogatory)

Only Channel 4 have actually made the effort to request 2.35:1 versions mid-licence, as they made the change in December 2007. A few prints cropped to 16:9 still exist, though, such as last night's Enemy at the Gates, and Eraser, last shown a few weeks ago.

I think BBC is making the switch gradually. Channel 5 probably have stuff in God knows what, 10-year packages? Given the frequency with which they show them. Ditto ITV.

I was impressed that FilmFour switched to an OAR version of Sea Wife after after having trotted out the 16:9 version with such regularity even since 2007. However, one of their more recent 20th Century Fox acquisitions, 'The Opposite Sex', was getting the now-frankly inexcusable 4:3 treatment last time I looked a couple of weeks ago.

Errrr..use the settings to `crop` the occasional `trendy` ad...are you mad?

There`s nothing wrong with the telly and ,I `know` how to use it.

I realise this thread is about movies..my `moan` as stated previously was about......oh forget it

(Pardon me for expressing an opinion)

I believe this version is the new one. Like I said, the film isn't longer, it's the deleted scenes that include the cut stuff that would have made it a 12 back in 1993. AFAIK, the deleted scenes for the DVD's released before 2003 also have all the deleted scenes. I know mine does.

Wondered if Magicians (on ITV right now, the film with Mitchell and Webb) would be 2.35:1 but it isn't. The opening Universal logo wasn't but I could see the UK Film Council logo that followed (albeit very darkly) was. Oh well.

Ta. It's a shame they didn't get the go-ahead to put them back in, or have a dual version. The BBFC can be such twits (misprint).

Hmm... Five currently showing Blade in 2.35:1.

Looks like as ITV4 has gone HD it is getting hold of proper OAR prints, The Fog was in 2.35:1 last night.

Did you look at the HD channel, that doesn't have signing if the film is availiable in HD.

I see that just after Xmas, BBC1 are showing Raiders of the Lost Ark on Jan 5th at 8.10pm. (with the so-so Crystal Skull on New Year's Day)

Given that they've only ever had a nice 2.35:1 print and a godawful 4:3 print of Raiders, which looks older than the film itself, they can't really trot that one out again?

why has no one developed a television yet which can adjust its size so you don't have black bars no matter what ratio a programme is broadcast in
pad_ehh
17-12-2010
Given there are 3 different sizes a picture could be in, and all of them are a good proportion taller or wider than the other, there is no way whatsoever all 3 can be on one set without black borders to maintain the image ratio.

There are 2.35:1 sized TV's so 2.35:1 movies are shown in the full size of the screen, but this means that 16:9 content is shown with black bars at the left and right, and 4:3 content would be shown with deep black bars to the left and right.

Imagine watching 4:3 content on one of those TV's and it was streched to fill the screen!
