Are they the kind of references that are in context and couldn't easily be cut out, save for making the film look a mess, so they just keep them in pre-watershed?

In Digiguide, it usually tells you if a film on Channel 4 has been edited for content when on pre-watershed. As you can imagine, the majority of PG/12 films on before 9pm are "edited for content/language".

It's a while since I've seen the film, so I don't recall specific details, but even if the 'sex references' were as you describe, the broadcasters really couldn't care less if it makes a mess of the film - they'll just cut regardless. You know what C4 (and the others!) are like...

By the way, first time I've seen RABBIT-PROOF FENCE broadcast OAR on the Beeb last night, along with WHAT A GIRL WANTS on ITV 2.

The two Saints and Soldiers films premiered on Movie Mix over the weekend. Both were screened with mono soundtracks, despite being released theatrically in Dolby Digital (5.1). The first one was badly cropped from 1.85:1 to 4:3, not 'opened up' like most 1.85:1 movies, while the second one, Airborne Creed (shot in scope), was shown OAR. Interesting low-budget war films with a pronounced Christian theme (especially the first one).

HPATHBP was shown in full widescreen. Unsure if this had been on ITV before. But it's about time they started showing these in their original format.

I think HBP is the one the premiered the christmas before last in OAR. It'll be because it's a recent premiθre rather than because they got a new print of it.

PATTON was cropped to buggery, and the famous opening speech - delivered brilliantly by George C. Scott in a searing performance - was gutted to remove PG-level langauge (one use of 'bastards' appears to have slipped through unnoticed though). This cavalier stupidity had the effect of dropping the best line in the picture, something to the effect of: "War isn't about dying for your country - it's about making sure the other poor bastard dies for HIS country!"

LAST CHANCE HARVEY (BBC 2) and 5 DAYS OF WAR (Movie Mix) both screened OAR in recent days, while CIRCUS WORLD screened on BBC 2 in the same tatty 4:3 print (under the UK release title THE MAGNIFICENT SHOWMAN) that the Beeb has been using since 1774. And their 16:9 print of EL CID just looked embarrassing when compared with the glorious 2.76:1 print of BEN-HUR screening on C4 at the same time...

Aye, that Ben Hur print does look good. Why can't any other channel show it in HD? Since C4's last broadcast (Easter last year, I think), it's aired on C5 in 16:9

Reign of Fire has been shown before in its OAR. I think it is the first time with T2 despite being shown on pretty much all terrestrial channels now.

The mention of POINT BREAK had me scrambling to see if I'd made a mistake in my listings, until I realised you must've meant POINT BLANK - an easy mistake to make (I've made worse on these very forums!). Not OAR, eh? It really comes down to pot luck when it comes to what gets shown, and it's a shame in this case, because I recorded it for viewing later, assuming it would be OAR. I'll rent the disc instead.

As well as all the others mentioned here, C5 had a bit of a CinemaScope marathon yesterday afternoon, screening OAR premieres of THE BURNING HILLS and THE FOUR FEATHERS, back to back.

Alas, while it was OAR, I'm sure the BBC has shown the extended version before now? I expected C4 to show both that AND show it in DD5.1. They did neither

Ta very glad to DarthFader and mattyb for those kind comments - much appreciated. Sometimes, you think you're doing stuff like this in a vacuum and that no one is paying attention. It's nice to be reminded that isn't true.

Anyways, just a heads-up that FOOL'S GOLD continues to be screened OAR, even though rights have reverted to the ITV platform (it played previously across the C4 platform). Also, I believe last night's broadcast marked the first time FALLEN (BBC 1) has been screened OAR on terrestrial TV. Meanwhile, THE TEMPEST premiered OAR on BBC 2, much as expected.

I'm appreciative of it also

360 was premiered OAR too last night (oddly, only in Dolby Surround rather than Dolby Digital, whereas the BBC are usually good at such things), so while I've recorded it, I don't know whether it's worth sourcing it in DD5.1 instead.

Insidious was OAR, as expected for C4, and the DD5.1 sound was really well used. The script was lame, so unless you're watching it with all the speakers going, you're missing out on the reason to watch it.

(And albeit in 1.85:1, what I've seen of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, so far, was also reasonable in DD5.1, although mainly for Katie Holmes )

I think it is, and there's a story behind this one.

Not sure if THE RECRUIT has since been released OAR on home video, but at the time of the original DVD release, it was 1.78:1 at the director's insistence. Only a small number of countries around the world were given an OAR master. This was because the helmer, Roger Donaldson, thought films shot in Super 35 for a 2.39:1 theatrical release should be 'opened up' for home video, because he didn't think scope movies fared well on TV sets at the time. He was vague about the details, but I don't think he'd seen such films displayed on 16:9 screens (4:3 was still dominant during the film's original release), otherwise I don't think he would have reached the conclusion he did.

But his thinking WAS skewed in other areas, insisting that those who wanted to see the scope version should see the film in cinemas, never mind that the theatrical window was very small and that most people would only ever see it on TV (broadcast or video).

Donaldson has evidently seen the light, because many of his subsequent films have been 2.39:1 both theatrically AND home video. He must have seen scope images on the new breed of 16:9 screens, made even more attractive with the introduction of HD.

And after all the fuss and kerfuffle, THE RECRUIT lands on BBC 1 last night in full OAR.
