Unusually, C4 broadcast a cropped version of BEAR ISLAND yesterday. Predictably, it looked hideous.

C5 has screened that one a couple of times, and it's always been shown the same way. I honestly don't know why they bothered.

It's a long held right to the film presumably, or it was thrown in as an extra with some other film rights they got.

What is even more disastrous is their positioning of their DOG on 4:3 content. They fixed it a while ago and then put it back where it was. Shockingly bad!

It's a Super 35 film so it's not as bad as if it had been cropped to 4:3 throughout, although there are a lot of shots which do look cropped (like Keitel and Madsen talking to Joe in his office), but at least it allows the "Who shot Nice Guy Eddie?" question to be answered without being cropped.

But Tarantino normally hires good DPs who know how to frame properly, so any cropping is just plain wrong...

Shame he didn't hire anyone to crop out the last 40 minutes of Django Unchained. Christ, that went on!

I tend to notice some films are better in widescreen, some are better as 4:3 and stretched by the TV.

How come it's not the same for all?

I have to disagree, since 4:3 and 16:9 versions of Super 35 films require extensive reframing of the image throughout, leading to cropping in some shots and 'opening out' in others. The aesthetic is altered to a significant degree, and is all the more insidious because the telecine artist goes out of his/her way to make it look 'invisible' to most people. I understand what you're saying in that it seems better than the cropping of an anamorphic image, but it's actually no less ruinous. So there.

Can you give examples? I highly doubt anyone would find a 4:3 image streched horizontally to fill the screen would look better than a proper widescreen picture, or a 4:3 picture properly pillarboxed to maintain the aspect ratio.

I think your TV / set top box settings are wrong, you should look into fixing them if your getting 4:3 pictures filling the screen.

Films come in different ratios. You can't be talking about a load of films that are all in the same original aspect ratio.

Agreed that we need examples and, yes, no film looks better stretched. People's faces are distorted, for a start.

How dare you make the assertion that films broadcast OAR are better?!

And in a thread devoted to that very same assertion, too! Don't think for a minute I'm not ashamed of it...

Reservoir Dogs was made with the video market and cable in mind, it was financed by LIVE Entertainment (a US home video label) the budget was well under $2 million. Like many films that period the theatrical release would have been used to generate reviews and publicity in the urban areas. If it made money theatrically it was a bonus and that could be used as leverage against cable sales and those figures could be used by sales houses at film markets.

Tarantino was allowed to produced a 2.35:1 cut from the Super 35 frame with full knowledge that the Super 35 negative would be used to produce a TV safe version and he had to compromise his final edit. The problem with Reservoir Dogs now is that the majority of TV screens in the western world are 16:9 and people STILL DON'T like black bars on their TV set and that means a panned scanned widescreen print or a zoomed/cropped full screen version has to come into play. I don't think Tarantino oversaw the creation of this new compromised version.

I don't think Django Unchained went on as much as Inglourous Basterds. Although Inglourious got better on a rewatch...

Shown 16:9 of course this being Channel 5, so how ironic that the first Wonga bookend featured a reference to 2.35:1 widescreen!

Ta for the info. I'm sure I once saw the 16:9 version on C4 before they sorted out their widescreen film policy, and it looked dreadful as it was cropped from 2.35:1.

IB is much better in my view. It does go on a bit in places, but still holds together. 8/10 from me for that one, whereas Django was 4/10 - some great scenes, but just went on and on and Tarantino was up his own arse as the film progressed, like when Django asks the ladies to say goodbye to the lady of the house (I won't spoil what happens, but it was stupid and unnecessary)

Yes, the brow-slapping irony of that Wonga bookend hadn't escaped my notice, either...

Nice to see EARTHQUAKE finally getting its OAR terrestrial 'premiere' on Film 4 the other day (they have the 1976 version of KING KONG in the coming week, which - if it's OAR - will be the first time that's been shown properly as well). And SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE has also been screening OAR on ITV 4.

But not the 'biggie', ANGELS & DEMONS, which was resolutely 16:9, typical of the films provided to C5 by Sony TV.

Is it even worth wondering whether C4 left Earthquake intact for a daytime screening? There are quite a few bastards, bitches and shits bandied around, as well as the sights of some of the bloodier by-products of the earth-moving mayhem.

Probably not - I'll be watching my recording of it later and will report back, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. However, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE is regularly screened pre-watershed with all its (considerable) PG-level language intact, so there's still hope for EARTHQUAKE...

Might check out King Kong, ta, and I've still not seen Superman IV before.

And 4 years old, now, too. This doesn't bode well for when they eventually show 2012, which is at least a year late(!)
