I had noticed that most of the promo has "TRON" in massive letters and then "Legacy" in a different colour and font beneath it. With "Legacy" being almost illegible. Perhaps somebody at Disney got confused, thinking it was a reboot and then later realised it wasn't...

I saw this in 70mm in April last year at the Bradford Film Festival widescreen weekend. The print was noticeably faded though.

I think I'm right in that this was shot twice, in 70mm Todd-AO at 30 fps and also in 70mm at 24fps. The only other Todd-AO production at 30fps (OKLAHOMA!) I saw years ago at that speed at the NFT. That was also shot in 35mm CinemaScope and I believe both versions are available on the DVD/Blu-ray.

Recently we had THE WAY WAY BACK (opening titles) and THE WAY, WAY BACK (closing titles).

Not one for your lists, as it's not in Scope, but BBC2 are showing next week a film which is not usually referred to as MATTHEW HOPKINS WITCHFINDER GENERAL, but that is what it is called on screen. I saw it at the NFT last weekend as well as THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW which is usually referred to inaccurately without the definite article.

Definitely 30fps, though not so sure about a 24fps version. If true, ya gotta wonder what the point would have been, since it would have been easy to create a 24fps version for 35mm and 70mm prints anyway - no need to shoot a separate version.

It most certainly is. However, some people - including those still alive who were involved in its production - insist it's only Witchfinder General, as per the original ad-mats, etc. Had the opening title said something like 'Vincent Price in... WITCHFINDER GENERAL', I'd tend to agree with them. But no, we get the name of a character within the drama, which seals the deal as far as I'm concerned. MATTHEW HOPKINS: WITCHFINDER GENERAL it is. So there.

Another fascinating debate - that errant 'The'! When I saw this on TV in the 1980's (!), there was ABSOLUTELY, DEFINITELY no 'The' in the on-screen title. I was very particular about listing films by their actual on-screen title at the time. Which is why it came as something of a suprise many years later to see TV prints bearing an on-screen 'The', complete with spelling mistakes throughout the opening titles (the copyright is given as 'Trigon' Films rather than Tigon, and actor James Hayter is spelled James 'Hoyter', etc.). It's possible the 'The' appeared on-screen during the film's initial theatrical run, complete with typos, but its notable that the BBFC entry for the 1970 submission - not always a reliable indicator, but they still pride themselves on listing the title as given on-screen, for legal reasons - also omits the 'The'. I have to stick with BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW until the origins of the typo-ridden print can be clarified.

Arguments to the contrary are very welcome indeed.

This would seem to be an early example of a higher frame rate intended to reduce flicker. However, as you say, it was impractical and expensive to shoot two versions (similarly with early Scope films also shot "flat") so 30 fps was abandoned after these two features and the short film THE MIRACLE OF TODD-AO (1956) and all later Todd-AO features were shot on 65mm at 24fps.

FWIW the print I saw last Sunday was a DCP, not a 35mm print - if any of those still exist.

Not a dick at all - I'm glad you were able to catch that mistake (the phrase 'eagle-eyed' springs to mind!), so others could be alerted. If mods allowed us to edit posts, it would make these listings a bit easier to manage, but c'est la vie. Ta for the heads-up, AND the kind words about the listings!

They probably do, but the theatrical arena is predominantly digital these days, so you pays your money and takes your chances. I don't mind digital presentations, to be honest, though I'm hearing horror stories from some quarters that what you see in your local multiplex isn't always as pristine as some would have us believe.

Anyways, one other thing about the 'The' in Satan's Claw which I forgot to mention in my previous post: As well as the BBFC entry for 1970, it's worth noting that contemporary ad-mats also credit nothing more than BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW. Again, not a wholly reliable arbiter, but the evidence suggests that the current print bearing the apple-cart-upsetting 'The' is relatively new, and that the original theatrical prints were divested of their appendage (and anyone out there who's ever been divested of THEIR appendage will know how painful it can be!! ).

Ahem.

The first DCP presentations I saw in the cinema were around 2000: as I remember one of the earliest I saw was THE PERFECT STORM. A few weeks ago I saw a DCP of A BOUT DE SOUFFLE from the last time it was reissued, which was 2000. If a HD master exists, which it will if the film is out on Blu-ray and in many cases even if it's just released on DVD, then it's simple enough to produce a DCP of an older film and make that available if anyone wants to rent it for a showing. I have heard that's increasingly the policy of the majors, who are more and more reluctant to send out 35mm prints nowadays. Case in point: a recent showing of THE OMEN (original) at the Prince Charles in London, a venue which does make a point of showing 35mm when it can and will advertise the fact when it does. THE OMEN hasn't had a cinema reissue in years (it may have had one when its sequels came out, don't remember) and certainly not in the last 13 years or so, but there it was - a digital print. That DCP showing of A BOUT DE SOUFFLE was in the same cinema.

Meanwhile, WAKE WOOD was shown in 16:9 HD last night. As far as I know this film was digital-captured and I understand that the DVD release is in 16:9 but the film was shown in cinemas at 2.39:1.

If Odeon are using the original trailer (the caption says "Released by Tigon Pictures" so I presume it is) it had no "The" and the correct spellings:

Someone has added the "The" to the IMDb entry.

Don't recall if it was shot 35mm or digital, but the photography is definitely spherical in origin, so the BBC's presentation is cropped and/or reframed from shot to shot.

I wish someone would finally lay this mystery to rest by finding out what happened to those old TV prints without the 'The' in the title, and who created the new(ish) prints with the spelling mistakes. And I'm not susprised the IMDb has added this mistake, since there's still a great deal of confusion over the issue, and they're inclined to accept any old submission by anyone at all.

According to the website of one of the production companies (here) it was digital. I couldn't tell you which camera etc was used, as I didn't see that info in the credits and there are currently no tech specs on IMDB.

On the titles thing, the title is WAKE WOOD (two words), which is odd as the village it's set in is Wakewood (one word), with a road sign to prove it! I'm not going to puzzle over that too much though, as I didn't think the film was very good.

At the BFI Southbank I had the pleasure on Sunday to watch THE INNOCENTS in something you don't see every day, black and white Scope. I know there are examples to this day (such as NEBRASKA) but genuine 35mm black and white is very much a thing of the past. Almost all b/w these days is either shot on colour stock or digitally-captured. The most recent mainstream commercial film to have anything shot on actual b/w stock I can think of was CASINO ROYALE, the bathroom fight at the beginning.

THE INNOCENTS is one of those films I wish I liked more, since it has a lot going for it - the aforementioned bw scope photography, fantastic production values, and Deborah Kerr (she was always great value for money). But it's clearly been made by people who are ashamed of the genre in which they're labouring, resulting in a film that wants desperately to be viewed as something other than what it is (ie. a horror movie). Critics have been lauding its subtlety for years, but I find it SO subtle that all the horror has been leeched out of it - no doubt exactly what the filmmakers had in mind. But I'll bet it looks fantastic on the big screen (like its contemporary, THE HAUNTING, another film which I don't really care for).

Nah, gimme FRIGHTMARE and THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF HORROR over these posh non-horrors any day of the week. Who says lack of subtlety ISN'T a virtue?...

H,D! has definitely been shown OAR before, but I don't think FL has been shown in anything other than cropped format.

Though all (?) of the previous Harry Potter films have been screened on ITV 1 of late in cropped/reframed format, they opted to show HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 in OAR last night. I presume the follow-up will be the same next week.

Though listed as a scope movie, this one turned up on C4 framed at 1.78:1, so I double-checked and it turns out the film was screened theatrically at 1.85:1. Since it's a 3-D picture, it still deserves a place in the listings, but the ratio will be corrected next time it shows up in one of my posts.

How The West Was Won - currently OAR on BBC2. At 2.89:1, that must be the widest film they've ever shown.

Am I right in thinking that Lady and the Tramp, last Xmas Eve, was the widest BBC1 film at 2.55:1?

Yeah that was the full aspect print.

looks really odd however.

Can see why the format didn't really make it standard. Distorted and almost too wide.
Great for this kind of movie however.

The ratio certainly looked wide, but it really ought to have been 2.59:1 (the 'official' AR for Cinerama), so I don't know why it was THIS wide (as I recall, the Blu-ray is the same, though it also includes a 'SmileBox' version which corrects the strange anomalies in the image mentioned by late8 and presents the film as it would have been seen by contemporary audiences). As with BEN-HUR on the C4 platform, you need a B-I-I-I-G TV to appreciate it at all.

It would seem so. But then, they also ran GUYS AND DOLLS at 2.55:1 the other day.
