LADY CAROLINE LAMB and THE PRODUCERS got their terrestrial OAR debuts on TV yesterday. I assume THE LINCOLN LAWYER was the same?

I didn't see TLL, but I've seen it before and it's a very good film.

I do believe that was the first time THE MISSION (BBC 2, last night) has been screened OAR on 'regular' TV, too.

You may be right. The version of TORPEDO RUN screened on the same channel (5 USA) was an ancient 4:3 print created by Turner Television for broadcast on square TV's during the second half of the 20th century!! How anyone can say they've 'seen' a film when watching it like this is just a joke. A pretty bad joke, at that...

Live and let die, currently shown on ITV, I'm sure the film has been double cropped. It's just awful.

It's a 1.85:1 film but the censorship isn't great.

Yet on my DVD there is more picture to be seen, on the TV version, it looked as though it was cropped all round. To me it looks as though it has been cropped originally for 4:3 and further cropped for 16:9 thus losing picture all round. I have noticed this with quite a few films recently.

Ah, I didn't realise that. I wonder if it's got anything to do with the way they window-box a film for the credits, for anyone watching in 14:9 or 4:3 with the wrong* settings on their digibox.

(* i.e. the user is in the wrong for cropping the picture)

The same happened with the BBC shown of The Colour of Money last week which I recorded, I ended up deleting it as it was so unwatchable. Far too much zoom in focusing on part of the picture. I wonder if many viewers notice this happening?

Another shitty old SD print? I was going to watch Bruce Almighty on BBC1 the other night, as I haven't seen that before, but it was in SD so sod that.

One I missed from recent listings:

THE RAINMAKER (filmed with Panavision anamorphic lenses) was screened on Viva last night, in a cropped 16:9 print. And while that was still some way short of the mark, it's still better than the BBC print which - for several years (!!) - was nothing more than a horrendously cropped 4:3...

I've no confidence that Film 4 has yet secured an OAR print of ENEMY AT THE GATES, but did anyone see if either BULLHEAD or BHOWANI JUNCTION premiered the 'right' way over the last couple of days? Ta in advance.

Also, THE BADLANDERS was cropped to 16:9 on C4 yesterday. Oddly, it looked like an HD broadcast - I say 'looked like', because every HD broadcast I've seen on my SD TV has narrow black bars down each side (I've complained about this on a number of occasions in this very thread), and this presentation had similar bars down either side. Time for an upgrade, C4...

So Channel 4 show the first few mins of Rio in 2.35:1, then crop it after that? Just compared it with the 2.35:1 version, too. It's a straight crop. WTF happened?

Presumably they stopped displaying credits after the first few minutes...

Very surprising to see Channel 4 not showing 2.35:1 films... They were once the leader and now appear to be going backwards....

I was thinking the very same thing. They did it with Wanted, and since the complaints they're promising to show it in full 2.35:1 soon.

Thanks for the heads up, I recorded it but now have just deleted it. I can't understand what Channel 4 are up to. Rio is a newish film so no excuse not to have a copy in the correct cinematic aspect ratio.

Have any of the Bonds been shown in their correct ratio yet?

Indeed. At first, I thought it might by like those films which open up to 16:9 or 1.44:1 for IMAX ratio, like Batman 2 & 3 and Hunger Games 2 (I love the way that one opened up as Katniss entered the arena), or perhaps like Cars where a separate 16:9 version has also been composed.

Even the first few scenes after the jump looked like they were composed for 16:9, but then things started falling off the screen, and it looked terrible. I compared it with the 2.35:1 version and that looked so much better.
