I had a look at Viva last night and Grisham's film was cropped to 16:9. And do they normally put the title onscreen throughout?
The VIVA logo was so far into the centre, and it had JOHN GRISHAM'S THE RAINMAKER under it(!)

Please be advised that upon further investigation, it appears that the performance of The Love Punch that you attended was shown in the correct aspect ratio; as a feature shown in scope (2.39:1) ratio is wider than in flat scope (1.85:1), the height of the projection needs to be reduced so that the width is not compromised on the screen itself. Since the advent of digital projection use extensively at Vue Cinemas, screen masking is no longer used.
As such, there is unfortunately no further action that can be taken at this time, as the film that you saw was shown correctly, and the performance has now passed and was watched to its conclusion; if you are ever dissatisfied with any aspect of your cinema visit, please do not hesitate to ask to speak to the Duty Manager, who will be happy to assist you further in resolving any issues more efficiently wherever possible.”
Sounds like a shite cinema. I'd also ask them what the ratio is of each screen (as I did of my two nearby Odeons) and hope they get it right next time. It sounds like that screen was a 1.85:1 one, judging by their reply, but they should have 2.35:1 screens they can show it on.
