Goof stuff, seeing Quiller Memorandum listed reminds me I better set the PVR for it, ta!

Bravo to mattyb for keeping the torch alight! Kudos to you, sir!

I keep popping in every day, to see what others are saying about the way scope/3-D movies are being handled on TV, and this was a nice surprise. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for continuing the list, but I just tried to find this and couldn't. Was it cancelled last minute?

It was in the listings alright. I briefly considered recording it but chickened out.

Anytime

As for the change in Film4 schedule. Its possible as some schedules are subject to change. This was in the listings, so I'm unsure to why it wasn't shown.

I've not had chance to do this week's movies from being too busy. I'll try and get a list up soon.

Surprisingly, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure went out in full 2.35:1 on ITV on Saturday afternoon.

Weird, it's owned by Studiocanal in the UK, and one of their films (Apocalypse Now) has gone out OAR on ITV4 before, so perhaps not completely unexpected, although I did think C4 had the rights to their catalogue...

And nice to see GRAND PRIX being screened at the full Super Panavision 70 dimensions on BBC 2, for the first time on terrestrial TV. It's the kind of film that really needs to be seen on a big screen in 70mm, but that's a rarity these days, so you hafta take what you can get...

Yep loved watching (just a pity about the hour of soap opera within it!)

True Entertainment are showing Plenty (1985) Fred Schepisi period drama, they are screening it in a squashed "picture frame" ratio, everyone is too thin and tall, however by using widescreen option on the sat box I can get it in the correct shape - 2.35:1

The ad breaks are of course now in the wrong ratio!

I saw the first screening of the film on that channel, and it was properly presented at 2.39:1, letterboxed within the 16:9 frame, so what you're describing must have been a tech error on TE's part. I'll check again next time it's screened and see what's going on. Ta for the heads up!

Sadly, STEP UP 'premiered' on C4 cropped to 16:9. Boo, hiss, etc.

This was in 2.35:1 when it was on last year. Very welcome. Unfortunately, ITV only broadcast in Dolby Pro Logic.

I think the A/Now OAR print only surfaced once it also did on Blu-ray and DVD in 2011. I don't think they've shown the longer version, though.

I could ask C4, but they'd just give the same crap excuse they always give ("Oh, it's the print we were given").

As far as I know the OAR print simply wasn't widely available at all until Studiocanal (or whoever, I'm not completely sure who owns it overall, but Studiocanal definitely has non-US rights) found and restored it for the blu-ray release, under the cinematographer's expressed intentions it's was panned and scanned to 2:1 for laserdisc (he was trying to get TV and Film to adapt to a universal aspect ratio, he believed 2:1 would be the most suitable) and for 4:3 or similar for television and other home media, until that release.

Why would they show the longer version TV stations tend not to play director's cuts, although I don't think the longer version is strictly a director's cuts, I got the impression Coppola was happy with both.

BBC2 showed Zodiac director's cut, and Betty Blue Version Longue have been shown recently on Film 4, I think. Sure, they're not the norm, but that shouldn't preclude them from showing it.

You think correctly, as recently as last Monday in the case of the latter.

They tend to only do it when the director's cut is the director's preferred version, the BBC have played out "The Final Cut" of Blade Runner, which is the only cut over which Ridley Scott had complete control, it's similar to the workprint, but in a different aspect ratio (generally shown OAR by the Beeb), and they reshot some scenes to remove continuity errors and obvious use of stunt doubles...

The Final Cut is shown elsewhere in a different ratio?

Just caught the end of PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE on C4 last night and it was cropped to 16:9. Anyone know if these has been shown OAR on this platform before?

I'll look out for it next time. Cheers to Mike for the heads-up.

And don't forget BBC2's 2.89:1 'premiere' of How The West Was Won, last Xmas.

51st State was shown on BBC1 in its OAR. I know Channel 4 have shown it, but I think its first time on BBC1 isn't it?
