Channel 5 currently showing the Fifth Element in OAR. Definitely a film that shouldn't ever be cropped.

Agreed, like a lot of Luc Besson films. Just a shame it's so flawed. For me it falls apart from Chris Tucker turns up. He's the Jar Jar Binks of this film!

Surprised no one else noticed this:

KELLY'S HEROES screened on Five USA yesterday (29 Jan) at the original 2.35:1 ratio.

Just a pity that it'll be cut to bits for a daytime screening.

Well I wasn't necessarily caring about the merits (or not) of the film, more just the happiness that more and more films are now being shown in OAR.

The film was rated PG by the BBFC, so why would it be "cut to bits"

I think you see nipple at one point, but like you say, it's rated PG.

I don't remember a nipple in this film, other than the headgear Gary Oldman was wearing, but it did include a moment where Ruby Rhod obviously went down on a woman and I can't think of anything else in the film that was stronger, for want of a better word, than that.

Language was cut, as Ruby says 'shit' a few times, and the phone conversation between Korben and his mother as soon as he reached his hotel suite starts with her saying "You miserable bastard! I never should have pushed you out!" which was obviously trimmed to "I never should have pushed you out!" They also cut part of the conversation between Korben and Fr. Cornelius when Leeloo is getting dressed although this conversation was quite innocent and contained no swearing and nothing 'bad' happened during it, and it was also only a few sentences, so why it was cut is a mystery! The scene where Ruby is rather blatantly implied to be performing cunnilingus on a woman and her constant moaning etc. was surprisingly left in uncut, in the teatime showing last weekend as well as the early afternoon showing yesterday.

Also, Leeloo's nipple was visible when she is lying on the table just after being created, but this was in the cinema only. For TV/DVD releases they have added a control panel on the machine that she is in which now conveniently covers her breasts from being seen.

Because when she is getting dressed you briefly see nipple.

There is more obvious a view of her breast and possibly her nipple in the second scene where she gets changed in front of people in Korben's apartment than at the priests home. The second instance was left in but the first wasn't. I must check the DVD when I get home.

Film 4 showing a film in 2.35:1 is hardly news, they've been showing things in 2.35:1 for years along with Channel 4/E4/More 4. If anything, it should be reported when those channels show something NOT in the OAR!

Well, now you mention it...

See a few pages back when the showings of this film were all over the place across C4/Film4, and also with the original Blu-ray release. That's why I mentioned this particular Film4 broadcast.

As I mentioned in an earlier post (not so long ago), and as DVDfever confirmed, EQUILIBRIUM has rarely been shown at 2.35:1 across the C4 platform. It's usually framed at 16:9. The latest screening on Film 4 has, of course, gone back to OAR, which is good news for anyone who happened to be seeing it for the first time.

Slightly off topic, In the marketing blurb for samsungs new TVs and BD players, they state our new technoligy automatical expands 2.3:1 movies to 16:9 filling the screen so you see the film as it was suposed to be seen without the annoying black bars, er no the aspect it was filmed in is the way it is supossed to be seen, this poor marketing will only confuse the uneducated even more.

Notice in their images they use to try and show off how their picture stretching or zooming works, they make it seem like 'those annoying black bands' are hiding part of the picture. Either that or they've got some amazing tech to fill in these missing sections

Cobra Mission on Movies 4 Men is in 2.35:1 I've noticed a gradual shift towards widescreen prints ditto the Horror Channel.

A TV that *creates* image on the fly? How did they manage that?

I'd love to let someone from Samsung try to sell me that TV/BluRay combo only for me to point out how utterly wrong and misleading their sales blurb is. I honestly can't believe they'd be so dumb as to tell people there is picture hiding under those black bars and that they're missing out on detail...!

I looked on their site for a way to contact them via email but only found a phone number and I'm not wasting my phone bill to tell some disinterested 12-year-old in Godknowswhere how wrong they are.

Anyhting on ITV that has been shown before cropped isn't going to be in 2.35:1 this tme around either. We will have to wait until we see news of them signing new deals with Warner Bros. and Universal before we'll see OAR versions of their existing movie rights.
