IN THIS WORLD was 2.35:1 on BBC 2.

This is C5, though - hardly brains of Britain.

They've shown 2.35:1 in SD before, so no reason to shirk away from it now.

Whatever Channel 5 show in SD they show in HD, this isn't like BBC HD and any other BBC channel. It was a premiere, from Sony and have shown Sony premieres before in 2.35:1 so it was quite strange they didn't show Hancock that way. Hell, they've even shown non-premieres that wern't even in HD in 2.35:1.

2.35:1 movies on the Freeview platform next week (5 - 11 March):

I see Sky 3 has changed its name to Pick and that a couple of Channel 5 subsidiaries are changing their names from Monday onwards - Fiver will become 5Star, while Five USA will become 5USA. Actually, '5Star' uses a star symbol rather than a spelled-out version of the word 'star', but my computer can't reproduce the star symbol (or the pi symbol, or the heart symbol, etc.), so I'm stuck with the spelled-out version.

Unless Channel 4 has updated their print, anyone tuning-in to DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER next week will see a verystrange print, one that has endured across the C4 platform for quite some time now. The 2.35:1 print has been reproduced at 16:9, but subject to a vertical squeeze which crams about 2.00:1 of the original scope frame into a 1.78:1 space. This has the effect of making everyone look slightly anorexic. The colours on this print have also faded to a significant degree.

Despite TIMELINE being scheduled for broadcast on Film4, it will most likely be cropped to 16:9, since C4 has broadcast a cropped version of that film since its first transmission.

The 2008 Brideshead Revisited movie is on BBC2 in an oddly windowboxed 2.35:1 at the moment. Those who missed the start will find it on BBC2 Wales (Sky 991) at 11pm.

Framed fine here now.

And looking fantastic on HD. The wow factor is well and truly present. I think something has changed recently.

Detest the DOG even more now. But let's accentuate the positive: for going OAR on BBC 2 at peak time, and for HD picture quality, well done BBC!

NEVER BACK DOWN was also screened at the original 2.35:1 ratio on the Viva music channel last night (5 March). However, the channel broadcasts at 4:3 (why?!!), so you'd have to 'blow up' the frame to stripe it across your 16:9 TV, losing quite a bit of image detail and quality in the process. Try the DVD instead...

By the way, the Radio Times indicated that the 9pm premiere of TAKEN on Channel 4 was 'edited for violence'. If that's true, it's the first time I can recall this happening on C4 after the 9pm watershed.

I'm assuming they ran the 15-cert cinema version rather than the (slightly more) brutal home video version, which received an 18-cert.

Well, 15-cert would be allowed at 9pm, but 18-cert would normally be 10pm, as I understand it. However, you occasionally get some 18-cert films starting at 9pm, like all the Alien films on Film4 recently.

All the Alien films have been re-rated as 15 by the BBFC so they are actually fine for broadcast at 9pm now.

Looks like 1 & 2 have, according to the BBFC's site, but not 3 or 4, which are still 18-certs.

I couldn't find individual 15-cert boxes on Amazon so I guess it just shows up in the Blu-ray boxset.

The uncut version of TAKEN is being screened by Channel 4 this weekend, at 10pm. Pity they couldn't have shown the uncut print FIRST, since the majority who viewed the first screening would not have been aware it was edited...

Agreed. Or just show it uncut both times and put it on at 10pm if need be with something good before it. (oh dear, Country House Rescue)

2.35:1 movies acreening across the Freeview platform next week (12 - 18 March):

If the Beeb doesn't screen AMADEUS: DIRECTOR'S CUT at 2.35:1, then switch off and rent the DVD/Blu-ray instead. Magnificent film, work of art, and needs to be seen full-strength or not at all. In fact, even if they DO screen it OAR, you may want to get the home video version just to enjoy the sumptuous 5.1 soundtrack. But that's just me...

The DVD rental version of CHAOS is cropped to 1.78:1 and, in all likelihood the retail version is similarly afflicted, so it's doubtful whether the version screening on Channel 5 will be any different.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS was cut by a few seconds courtesy of the BBFC to remove sight of horses being tripped in a dangerous manner. Good. It shouldn't have been filmed in the first place. But that's just me. Again.

Stripped of its extra dimension, JAWS 3-D (or JAWS III, as the 2-D print is usually called) will be even MORE worthless if it's also cropped at the same time.

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY was shot in Super 35 and framed at 2.35:1 during principal photography, but for reasons lost to the mists of time, the theatrical version went out at 1.85:1. It wasn't until the film was released on DVD that the intended scope framing was restored. C4 has always screened the 1.78:1 version to date, so let's see if they've upgraded for next week's broadcast.

And despite being a Film 4 production, THE WOODLANDERS has always been cropped to 1.78:1 on the C4 platform, and I don't expect it to be any different next week.

By the way, do you guys find these weekly lists useful?

No fishing for compliments here - just curious to know if people are using them, or if most are just scrolling past. It would crush my ego to find out it was the latter, but I can take it...

It was 16:9 again but not stretched, just very badly 'blown up' in terms of PQ. The colour wasn't so much faded as just 'wrong'-seeming.

@ Libretio: I've been sort of skipping through your lists TBH! Though I had noticed Amadeus Director's Cut, which looks like a must-see if it's shown in OAR.

The problem is just that--we don't know exactly which ones will be in OAR. But I noticed to my amazement that Mystic River was shown properly last night. WIth the ITV DOGs dimmed to a personally acceptable level l I'd definitely have recorded this had I known. So I think I need to use your lists more proactively, i.e. record things of interest, then if they are not right I can just delete them.

So yes, please keep up the good work!

It's good to know the lists ARE being used - I appreciate the response.

mwardy:

Ah, but the beauty of such a weekly list is that if a film is mentioned therein, and it's broadcast on TV at anything other than the original ratio, then you're better off seeking it out elsewhere. I see most movies these days via my DVD rental service, for example, and the vast majority of those are OAR, with the occasional (very occasional!) discrepancy. Nor are the end credits squeezed, cropped, edited, talked-over or made to go hurtling up the screen at 600 miles per hour. 'Tis bliss, and no mistake...

So I'm a movie nerd. So sue me...

Russelllan:

I didn't catch the repeat of DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER, but it sounds very much like the same print C4 have been flogging to death from the outset. Mind you, there was very definitely a vertical squeeze on the version I saw, which took pounds off the cast's collective waistline! And, yes, the colours were really quite ugly...

Neither was V FOR VENDETTA on BBC 2, or GOAL II: LIVING THE DREAM on the same channel, though the original GOAL! was screened at 2.35:1 just recently...

I've only ever seen 2 films on Channel 5 in 2.35:1. Monster House and Last of the Mohicans. One is a Sony release, the other 20th Century Fox. As Channel 5 have shown other premieres from both these studios but cropped, it makes you wonder if it's two 2.35:1 showings were acidents or not.

That is odd about Goal 2 as they're all from the same stable (Amazon lists the three films as either frmo Walt Disney or Buena Vista, but they're both part of the same company).

A few others have been, but they're about as slim as ITV's showings. I remember War (2007 and Jet Li and Jason Statham) was one film at 9pm on a Sunday. That was a premiere, but Lost in Space and Fifth Element have both been mid-90s films so far from premieres.

Odd that Phone Booth was cropped to 16:9 last night, given that a 2.35:1 print is clearly available as it's been on C4 et al many, many times. I hated that film, though. Without giving any spoilers (because some may have recorded it from last night), I hated it because the caller sounded like he was booming out over a tannoy across the city, not talking down a phone line. They could at least have made that effort!
