I don't know what all the fuss is about. I just adjust my TV to whatever suits the film/TV show, whatever.
I find that you 'adjust' to black lines above & below the picture anyway after a few minutes. It's all psychological methinks

Thursday (12 May)

• 300 (5 USA)
BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Film 4)
• BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (Film 4)
• COACH CARTER (Film 4)
CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (Film 4)
• DOLORES CLAIBORNE (ITV 3)
• HUSH (Film 4)
• THE ISLAND (ITV 2)
• SERENITY (ITV 4)

Not ratio related but it will be interesting to see if Film4 decide to air the extended Battle (still not available intact in the UK ) or the original directors cut of Conquest which was a revelation on the Bluray set after decades of the tame re-edited cinema version.
Also a good example of the theatrical version being a long way from the definitive version, although not from a ratio POV

Predators is the only one in that franchise (discounting the Alien Vs...) which is 2.35:1, but quite frankly you're better switching it off before it begins. It's bloody awful.

Annoying - ITV3 are airing a pan-and-scan 4:3 cut of Fiddler...
Good thing I have the DVD...

If it's any consolation, BBC 4 ran a 2.35:1 version of JAR CITY, whilst ITV 3 ran a similarly scope version of DOLORES CLAIBORNE.

I'm also assuming BBC 2 ran a scope version of THE RED BARON, which is how it was screened when it premiered on the same channel last year. Annoyingly, this 12-cert movie has been scheduled before the watershed on both occasions, so gawd knows what (if anything) was edited from the film...

Just watched the Joneses on sky movies and noticed they were showing it in 16:9, different from the OAR of 2.35:1. Quickly compared with the trailer and it was opened up at the top and bottom, must have been shot on super35. Unusual for sky as everything is usually in OAR and uncut.

Long time lurker, first time poster - although I used to frequent Libretio's posts on the old Film Four forums!

Good to see BBC4 screened Jar City in 2.35:1, since the UK DVD was opened up to 1.85:1.

Vastly disappointed with Film4's screening of Amelie last week during their Films for Life season - edited for a pre-watershed screening, shocking treatment for a much-loved film during a season supposedly celebrating the joys of cinema!

And while we're at it, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (not mentioned in my recent listings) was screened 4:3 letterbox at the original 2.35:1 ratio on Viva over the weekend.

The film was shot and released at 1.85:1, so it will very likely be screened at a fair approximation of that ratio.

I like your username ("Cobblers!" is my favourite expression)!!

I'll bet there was no warning about the editing of AMÉLIE before the broadcast? Back in the early 80's, when Channel 4 first started, this kind of thing would have been beyond the pale for those running the station, where 'censorship' was a dirty word (we can thank C4 for the gradual 'opening up' of the broadcast airwaves, since they pioneered the screening of uncut material - whether films or imported TV shows - right from the very beginning). I recall their announcer making a big thing of the censor cuts imposed on them when they premiered SCUM and A BIGGER SPLASH, both of which were later screened completely uncut. Nowadays, anything goes, and who cares if the punters don't notice?...

The US DVD was reframed at 1.78:1, too, and it appears the film didn't get the original 2.35:1 treatment on home video until it premiered on Blu-ray. It would seem Sky got their master from the same place as the DVD release, unfortunately.

Monte Carlo or Bust on Film4 again next week.
The film was released on US dvd a couple of years ago and just this week has appeared on a US Bluray double billed with Houdini .
But before the official dvd I tried to do one myself only to find that Film4 showed it cropped to 16:9.
Have they changed to the correct 2.35:1 since starting to show the HD version?

Hopefully not. I prefer the 16:9 crop as it fills much more of my screen.
Hopefully YES

I much prefer to see the film as it was 'composed' - nothing worse than seeing two noses (left & right) talking.

But since there also seems to be the habit of channels showing a film more than once in a week - I think they could show is in both modes on different nights.

Then I can start saving for a Philips 21:9 HDTV

Cheers, daveac

Yes, they have. As you say, the cropped version was shown multiple times, but a 2.35:1 version became available just recently. About time, too.

2.35:1 movies across the Freeview platform next week (14 - 20 May):

The rental DVD version of BLACK SHEEP is cropped/altered to 1.78:1, so it's unlikely we'll be seeing a 2.35:1 version on BBC 1 next week. I haven't been able to find out if the retail DVD is similarly cropped, but I'm hoping someone out there can confirm one way or the other.

And anyone hoping for a 2.35:1 version of DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE on Channel 4 will be waiting in vain if the Radio Times listing is anything to go by. There's no '(HD)' or even '(W)' notation for the film, so it looks like we'll be getting the same cropped 1.33:1 version we've been getting for many years. It may be an obscure oldie, but it deserves more respect than this, surely?...

As if to make up for it, THE BEST MAN (which I somehow managed to omit from last week's listings) was cropped to hell and back on BBC 1. Who on earth is making these decisions on a film-by-film basis?

Chances are that films not in the correct ratio are simply old copies of films still running on a contract made before the decision to screen 2.35:1 films.

To be fair the decision seems quite recent in that it was only late last year when it started and there is likely to be huge number of films left with contracts from earlier than that which may well have several years left to run so we're likely to see cropped movies for a very long time yet as the BBC won't be paying for new copies of films they already have unless they are interested in getting HD copies to replace an sd version which I would say they would not bother with on many , if any existing films

All of this sounds about right. It's just frustrating, because it all seems so arbitrary from one film to another.

I was expecting both of these to be OAR (TELL NO ONE has been screened before), so they came as no surprise. For some reason, I'm expecting PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL to be OAR, too, but I may well end up being disappointed on that score...
