DISGRACE screened at 2.35:1 on BBC 2 last night. Granted, only about two people will have watched it, but still...

And... UNBREAKABLE 'premiered' at 2.35:1 on ITV 2 last night. A worthy follow-up to THE SIXTH SENSE and very much worth a look, especially at the original ratio.

2.35:1 movies across the Freeview platform next week (25 June - 1 July):
I'll now be including 3-D films in the listings, regardless of aspect ratio. However, as with the scope movies, if there's anything in the list which was projected theatrically at something other than 2.35:1 or 2.39:1, I'll make a note of it. Can't say fairer than that, can I? I'm including 3-D entries because they're another kind of film that can't be replicated on 'regular' channels, and people should be aware of what they're seeing before they sit down to view. Seeing a 2-D version of a 3-D film is like watching a pan-scanned CinemaScope movie - and yes, that includes CLASH OF THE TITANS! Anyways, on with the show... Saturday (25 June) AIR AMERICA (ITV 3) BATTLE OF MIDWAY [Midway] (ITV 4) BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY (ITV 1) BROKEN ARROW (E4) BROKEN LANCE (Film 4) [2.55:1] CAHILL: UNITED STATES MARSHAL (5 USA) CONSTANTINE (ITV 2) DANTE'S PEAK (ITV 2) FALLING DOWN (ITV 4) FINAL DESTINATION 3 (Film 4) THE GREEN BERETS (5 USA) KING KONG (ITV 2) NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (ITV 1) SHOOTER (FiLM 4) STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (E4) Sunday (26 June) BATTLE OF MIDWAY [Midway] (ITV 4) THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW (Film 4) HEAT (Film 4) INSIDE MAN (ITV 2) MYSTIC RIVER (ITV 3) PRACTICAL MAGIC (5 Star) THE QUIET AMERICAN (BBC 1) ROOSTER COGBURN (Film 4) STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (E4) WHAT A GIRL WANTS (5 Star) WHEN TIME RAN OUT... (BBC 2) WHERE EAGLES DARE (Channel 5) WIMBLEDON (ITV 1) Monday (27 June) 23 PACES TO BAKER STREET (C4) THE BOUNTY HUNTER (More 4) [1.85:1] [3-D] FIRST BLOOD (ITV 1) FREEDOMLAND (Channel 5) MURPHY'S WAR (Film 4) SHALLOW HAL (5 Star) SINK THE BISMARCK! (Film 4) SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION (Film 4) TRANSPORTER 2 [Le Transporteur 2] (Film 4) VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (ITV 4) Tuesday (28 June) AND WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR FATHER? [see: Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies] ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST [C'era una Volta il West] (Film 4) TAXI (Film 4) THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES [Monte Carlo or Bust!] (Film 4) TRANSPORTER 3 [Le Transporteur 3] (Film 4) Wednesday (29 June) CAN-CAN (Film 4) [2.21:1] THE CHILDREN OF THE CENTURY [Les Enfants du Siθcle] (Film 4) DOCTOR DOLITTLE (Film 4) [2.21:1] FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (E4) THE FOG (ITV 4) MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (Film 4) MATCHSTICK MEN (ITV 1) MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (Film 4) THE ROCK (BBC 3) THAT TOUCH OF MINK (Film 4) THREE KINGS (ITV 2) VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (ITV 4) Thursday (30 June) BROKEN ARROW (E4) THE CONTRACT (Channel 5) DEATH DRUMS ALONG THE RIVER (More 4) FLASH POINT [Dao Huo Xian] (Film 4) IP MAN [Ye Wen] (Film 4) NORTH TO ALASKA (Film 4) TROY (ITV 2) Friday (1 July) ARLINGTON ROAD (BBC 1) BLACK HAWK DOWN (5 USA) THE BLACK WINDMILL (ITV 1) FALLING DOWN (ITV 4) HEAT (Film 4) KUNG FU HUSTLE [Gong Fu] (Film 4) MIAMI VICE (ITV 1) SINK THE BISMARCK! The hideously re-edited, re-scored and re-dubbed version of FIRST STRIKE (hideously retitled JACKIE CHAN'S FIRST STRIKE, just in case US audiences were too thick to notice JACKIE CHAN IS THE HEADLINE STAR!!!) was screened at 2.35:1 on ITV 4 last night.
Masochists who missed it will be relieved to hear of a repeat (What? An actual bona fide repeat on ITV 4? I don't believe it!!... ) this coming Tuesday. Anyone else is urged to seek out the original Hong Kong version.

Movies 4 Men 2 is continuing to turn up some very decent widescreen prints of old school Italian bible/sword & sandal epics. The Heroes of Babylon (1963) and Sign of the Gladiator (1959)being the latest I've spotted.
Julius Caesar and the Pirates & The Warrior and the Slave Girl are on this weekend. They must have bought a job lot. |

I don't think any of those titles are available on DVD in the UK, either, which makes them all the more valuable. Are they letterboxed 4:3 or enhanced 16:9 (with the 2.35:1 image letterboxed across the centre - just thought I'd clarify!)?

Narrow strips top and bottom - that's enhanced 16:9 I take it?

I've seen a handful of 3D films in the cinema and don't feel I'd have missed much seeing them in 2D- for a start the colour is poorer and the brightness is greatly reduced. I don't feel I'm missing out when I watch them at home, where as I wouldn't like to see a film cropped to 16:9 or (previously) 4:3 if at all possible. |

I get where you're coming from but disagree- especially in the case of 'retrofitted' 3D films- they've performed poorly in cinemas and (I understand) don't look particularly impressive. Its not quite on the level of 'colourising' but its in that direction.
1. The surcharge for 3-D films is completely self-defeating. 2. The use of 'subtle' 3-D (favoured by the likes of James Cameron) means that people are sitting in their cinema seat, having paid the premium, wondering why the movie is in 3-D at all, since it makes no difference whatsoever. Many filmmakers have no clue how to integrate meaningful 3-D composition into a strong narrative. Rather than struggling NOT to draw attention to the 3-D, filmmakers should be doing the exact opposite, since that's what the public has paid their money to see. Unfortunately, once an audience member has seen one 'subtle' 3-D film, they think they're ALL like that, and they just don't bother going to see anymore. The reports of 3-D's imminent demise are, of course, hugely exaggerated (as these things are wont to be!). Take a look at the following 3-D filmography, which has just undergone a massive update. Take a look at the list of upcoming 3-D films (all of them in various stages of development), and you'll see a VERY healthy slate of films from all over the world, testament to the health and vitality of 3-D beyond US borders: 3-D Filmography (1922 - Present Day) As for whether I should list them here or not, the fact is that these films DO exist in 3-D versions, regardless of how the format was achieved. And it's the case that they can't be screened on 'regular' TV in their original form. So, I just want to let people know what they're 'missing' when they sit down to one of these films, which allows them to choose whether or not they'd like to waste their time on such presentations. Apologies for the length of my response. I'm clearly going through a verbose period! Nurse, the screens!!

A pathetic start to the new week, with scads of scope movies already cropped to buggery and beyond, including THE GREEN BERETS on More 4. Is this one out on DVD in a 2.35:1 print, I wonder? A properly-framed version seems to have eluded broadcasters since the dawn of time...
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED suffered the double ignominy of being cropped AND censored for a pre-watershed spot, and THE SWARM was similarly curtailed from its original scope dimensions. Incidentally, THE SWARM isn't nearly as 'awful' as all those pompous critics would have you believe - or, at least, that's how it seemed when I saw the theatrical cut many years ago. Now, unfortunately, the only version which is available - and which played on BBC 2 this afternoon - is the two-and-a-half-hour director's cut, which slows the whole thing down with what seems like HOURS of pointless dialogue exchanges. A shame, that. |

I've got the Deagostini Classic John Wayne Collection copy of The Green Berets in 2.40:1. The only drawback is it's a double-sided flipper that you have to turn over in the middle of the movie! For reference if anyone wants to search for it on ebay or elsewhere,or try to order it from Deagostini as a back issue,it was issue#85.

I assume they'll be screening Beyond the Poseidon Adventure next week killing two stones with one film - Caine and terrible late period Irwin Allen.

![]() Don't feel too bad, though. One of my favourite horror movies is THE BODY SNATCHER, produced in 1945, and it used to turn up regularly on BBC 2 in the days when black and white movies were a regular thing on the dear old Beeb. But they used to run the same print ALL THE TIME, and it was the version which had been censored by the BBFC - to the tune of about five minutes worth of material! - way back in the 1940's when it was first submitted!!! The uncut version was subsequently rated PG on video... |

A number of scope movies have screened on TV outside of the C4 platform over the last few days - I'm surprised no one else picked up on 'em.
Anyways, STOLEN was screened at 2.35:1 on BBC 1 on Sunday night. Though made for TV, the film was shot in Techniscope and has played at various international movie festivals. I didn't actually realise it was a 2.35:1 film until it was shown that way by the Beeb, which is why it didn't appear in last Friday's listings, and a quick Net check confirmed the shooting format. Also, LAST MAN STANDING 'premiered' at 2.35:1 on ITV 4 on Monday night, with PITCH BLACK at the same ratio on ITV 1 the following night (probably ported directly from the same print used by C4 for quite some time). |

![]() Seeing the clips beforehand, I didn't know if it was shot in 2.35:1 - and if it was, then would they show it in 16:9 as they did with TV drama Toast (although that was a Super 35 film - but it's still a bit shit to tease with 2.35:1 clips and trailers and then show it in 16:9) or if the black bars were just there for effect like the trailers for Zen. LMS is a bit daft, but is worth a watch. It's on again tomorrow night at 9.05pm.Pitch Black and the other Riddick film are worth a look too. I loved the 'Escape from Butcher Bay' game they made in 2004. One of the best games of its time. http://dvdfever.co.uk/reviews/riddickx.shtml |

Thank god someone else has posted! I was starting to think everyone had deserted the place! Tumbleweeds ahoy!, etc.
![]() Ahem! Anways, BARBARELLA on ITV 4 last night at 2.35:1, along with OCEAN'S TWELVE on ITV 1. Sadly, DARK WATER was promoted as being screened simultaneously in HD and was the same old 16:9 version we all know and loathe. Ya wins some, ya loses some... |

![]() Almost everything on Pro7 was dubbed into German and I saw bits of Watchmen and all of Next, as I settled in, and both of those were in 2.35:1. I'd seen Next anyway and so knew what was going on. As for Watchmen, I couldn't believe that was actually a Hollywood film as it was a total load of nonsense and I don'ty think that even in English would it make sense. Anyway, Carla Gugino looked very fetching in her skin-tight leather outfit, so I'll wait until the Blu-ray is a bit cheaper on Amazon and then get it
