EAGLE EYE on BBC 1 at the original 2.35:1 ratio. Sadly, the film directly after it - HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME - was 16:9, and that's the one I was looking forward to seeing. I switched it off after 10 seconds...

Channel 4 - Beverley Hills Cop airing at 2330 - looks like correct 1.85:1.

Yep, 16:9 on BBC1HD too. I saw about 10 mins of it as my nephew was watching it while I was at my sister's house, and I was wondering whether they would've made a separate 16:9 version for some very brief scenes featuring text, as when the opening race was on there was various pieces of text onscreen that, had one been watching in the cinema it would no doubt have been placed at the edges of the screen otherwise it'd just look odd (a bit like watching a 16:9 programme with all the text in the 4:3 centre area)

Pixar often make different versions by recomposing the scenes digitally. All their earlier releases were done this way for 4:3, so maybe more recent releases have 16:9 versions.

So we got the version with "moderate battle violence and mild sex" instead of the one with "strong battle violence and mild sex" then.

2.35:1 movies across the Freeview platform for the rest of this week (30 July - 5 August):
Apologies for the delay in posting this list. Due to an act of theft and vandalism which knocked out hundreds of land-lines in my area, I've been disconnected from the Net since Wednesday, so this is the first time I've been able to catch up. Even though it's already been and gone, I'll post Saturday's listings anyways, along with a note that KING ARTHUR 'premiered' at 2.35:1 on BBC 1, while the actual premiere of SUMMER on BBC 2 was cropped/reframed to 16:9. Saturday (30 July) • THE BANK JOB (Film 4) • BLUE THUNDER (C5) • CHEYENNE AUTUMN (C5) [2.21:1] • 'CROCODILE' DUNDEE II (C4) • EVER AFTER (Film 4) • THE FAMILY MAN (Film 4) • FREE WILLY (ITV 2) • HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (ITV 1) • KING ARTHUR (BBC 1) • MAJOR DUNDEE (5 USA) • MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (5 USA) • THE MUMMY (ITV 2) • NO RESERVATIONS (ITV 2) • SUMMER (BBC 2) • UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION (C4) • WHITE FEATHER (Film 4) [2.55:1] Sunday (31 July) • BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (C5) • D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE (Film 4) • FIRST BLOOD (ITV 4) • THE KINGDOM (ITV 1) • THE LAST STARFIGHTER (C5) • LET'S TALK ABOUT THE RAIN [Parlez-Moi de la Pluie] (BBC 2) • MAJOR DUNDEE (5 USA) • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (Film 4) • THE MUMMY RETURNS (ITV 2) • OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (ITV 2) • ROMANCING THE STONE (E4) • SCARY MOVIE (E4) • THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (C4) • THIS BOY'S LIFE (Film 4) • WHAT JUST HAPPENED? (BBC 2) • xXx (C5) Monday (1 August) • BLADE: TRINITY (Film 4) • BOOGIE NIGHTS (ITV 4) • DEEP BLUE SEA (ITV 2) • THE GAUNTLET (ITV 4) • INFERNAL AFFAIRS III [無間道III終極無間] (C4) • THE NINTH GATE [La Neuvième Porte] (C5) Tuesday (2 August) • 23 PACES TO BAKER STREET (Film 4) • ANASTASIA (Film 4) • BLOOD WORK (5 USA) • D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE (Film 4) • DRILLBIT TAYLOR (Film 4) • GLADIATOR (ITV 2) • SPECIES (ITV 4) Wednesday (3 August) • BLADE (C5) • THE BRAVADOS (C4) • DEMOLITION MAN (ITV 4) • ELEKTRA (Film 4) • FIREWALL (BBC 3) • MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN (C4) • OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (ITV 2) Thursday (4 August) • AVP: ALIEN VS. There was no credit for a special photographic process in the opening credits, either, though I'll concede the 1.78:1 presentation on BBC 2 certainly looked a little cramped at either side. That said, are you sure about the Movies4Men screenings? It's odd, because this is the kind of movie that was routinely shot in scope during the 1960's, though a clue may be in the fact that Robert Aldrich was the director. I may be wrong, but I don't think he was a fan of the scope format and directed few (if any) such films during the course of his career. |

When I saw some of it last time, it just looked open-matte. Quote:

![]() ![]() BTW, Last Starfighter on C5 cropped to 16:9. Shame because I love this film. There's a US Blu-ray special edition, so I'll have to get that one. |

xXx is on C5 in 2.35:1, for what I'm sure is the first time, as both films were cropped to 16:9 before now, so they must've got an HD print.
Is that the first time they've shown a 2.35:1 fim properly when they've only had it in 16:9 before? |

Friday (5 August) Ooh, ta. I missed that last time round. Have been looking forward to a repeat ever since, as it was in 2.35:1 (well, when I saw 'missed it' I mean I saw it being in 2.35:1 too late to catch it from the start)
• WILBUR WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF [Wilbur Begår Selvmord] (BBC 2) |

Got it wrong, same ratio as BBC2 showing. Must have been thinking of some other old school epic.

Boogie Nights is in 2.35:1 on ITV4, and I know that has been commented on before, but it seemed odd because the 'opening credits' were windowboxed. I know that happens sometimes on some channels for all those idiots who crop the image on their digibox, but when it comes to Boogie Nights... there AREN'T ANY opening credits.
There's a single shot which lasts a few minutes and is very clever, but no text beyond a place/year caption which is well within even the 4:3 centre bit. |

It was broadcast on ITV. That's all that needs to be said.
I was walking past the telly last night and noticed there was a film on ITV 4 with Clint Eastwood in it and it was in 2.35:1. Can't think of the name though. EDIT- Just looked at the list above, it was The Gauntlet. |

Has GLADIATOR ever been on C4/Film4? Have you 'done a Mike' and gotten this one mixed up with another gladiatorial man-fest? Or am I the one who's just had a brain-fart? As you can plainly see, my recent posts have been full of 'em...
