Empire Records was on Channel 4 last night in 2.35:1. Cracking little 90's teen comedy too.

It was four years ago, when the BBC got the rights for a one-off screening as part of some film season. It sparked off a debate at the time about whether Bond films had ever been shown on the BBC before then.

And the answer, apart from the 'unofficial' 'Never Say Never Again', was that they never had been.

RUNNING SCARED cropped/reframed at 16:9 on Film 4 last night, though I've definitely seen it framed at 2.35:1 on either E4 or C4 in the past. It seems to be one of those films (like RAT RACE) which they're contractually allowed to show correctly on one channel whilst having to reframe it on another. At least, that's the only explanation I can come up with for what they're doing...

It's like Blade on 5*, which I mentioned being in 16:9 the other night. Perhaps the explanation is that the morons are in charge that night?

KRULL was cropped to 4x3
think it's still five's original print though

unless they mucked up the format

ITV4 showed Lethal Weapon 2 uncut and in full 2.35:1 last night

As expected, GLORIOUS 39 was also 2.35:1 on BBC 2. It had been previewed that way, so it came as no big surprise...

Beneath the Planet of the Apes was on C4 HD last night in 2.35:1, full HD.

Dunno if anyone out there saw it, but I'm assuming BULLWHIP on Film 4 was the same cropped 4:3 print that has always played across the C4 platform? I missed it, so it would be interesting to know if they'd managed to secure an upgraded print.

It was in 1080p?

It was 1920x1080 1080i on satellite but there isn't really any difference to 1080p for film material as long as your deinterlacer is decent.

From Russla with Love is NOT 1.85:1.
Like Dr No and Goldfinger it was filmed 1.66:1 and it is correctly presented that way on the Bluray and UE dvd.

Those with overscan on will likely lose the side borders giving the impression of 16:9.

ITV appeared to show it in 16:9 although my overscan was on too.
They can't show 2.35:1 Bond movies correctly so I don't expect them to show a 1.66:1 film right either

The Bond producers moved back to 1.66 for Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun

The sleeve for the 2000 special edition release of FRWL says it's presented in 16:9. I don't have the UE release.

TO be fair , the 16:9 ratio was used in different ways by different companies.

For some , 16:9 was to designate that the disc was anamorphically enhanced instead of 4:3 L/B.

So its not cut and dried although I expect the SE might well be 1.77/1.78 / 16:9.

If you have it on your tv you may be able to disable overscan to see whether the disc plays back with side borders.

However - you need to dump that SE and get the UE or Bluray.
Of all the Bond films released on home video over the years From Russla With Love is the one that suffered the most with a quite appalling transfer ever since the days of VHS.

SO along with Dr No and Goldfinger FRWL is an absolute revelation on the UE and especially on Bluray where the picture is better than its ever been seen before and likely better than when it was in cinemas thanks to modern restoration technology

ITV4 seem to have mucked up Quadrophenia - normally 1.85:1 - they seem to be airing in 16:9 or that weird AR they do... some shots seemed cropped, especially on Brighton coast...

Thanks porkpie. I've got the complete set of special editions from 2000 and a few of the UE's,notably Goldeneye,Licence to Kill and Tomorrow Never Dies.

I hate it when ITV crop a film not only to 1.85:1 from 2.35:1 but also add bars at the left and right to squash all the information in so it won't be cut off or missed by those watching in 14:9/4:3. How annoying. Especially on ITV 1 HD, for pity's sake, it's a HD channel, no-one can miss anything as they wouldn't be watching it if they didn't have a HD set and could see everything anyway!

Until it gets somewhere near the number of showings of the James Bond films.

Thing is,whilst I enjoyed BJD I don't really have the desire to watch it every two-three months which is how often it seems to come on these days.
