Turns out that the film BETWEEN (shown on BBC 2 on Saturday night) was filmed at 2.35:1, but the Beeb's print was cropped/reframed. There was some obvious pan-scanning going on, and a check of various DVD versions confirmed the sorry truth about the original ratio.

By the way, here's an odd thing: Just saw the horror film JOSHUA which premiered on Film 4 last week, framed at 1.78:1. The closing credits (white text against a black background) were seemingly letterboxed at 2.35:1, with obvious mattes at the top and bottom of the screen. However, research confirms the film was shot and exhibited at 1.85:1, so I'm not sure why the credits should have been arranged this way.

How dare they, and give it to us for free as well.
Oh, I couldn't agree more! And because it's free, they expect us just to lap it up like sheep (sheep, I tells ya!) and say absolutely nothing about it on forums like this one, even if it IS a place where discussion is encouraged (this being a 'forum', and all), and where people wouldn't dream of making sarky comments designed specifically to rile other folks, just so an argument can break out...

I'm told the UK DVD version of IRONCLAD has been cropped/reframed from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1. Nice one, Warner Bros.

Not.

Just for the record, THE DUCHESS screened on BBC 2 on Thursday night at the original 2.35:1 ratio. I haven't seen it yet, but the trailer made it seem like this was a terrific use of the anamorphic widescreen format (none of that Super 35 rubbish here, mateys!).

Unfortunately, the same channel made a pig's ear of BAD EDUCATION, a terrific, twisty (and very gay!) thriller from Pedro Almodóvar. Parts of the film are framed at something like 1.85:1 (perhaps 2.00:1, it's hard to gauge from the DVD version), while the majority is 2.35:1. In their wisdom, the Beeb opted to broadcast the narrower footage at something like 2.00:1, while the full scope scenes were - you guessed it!- cropped to 1.781!!

Why can you never find a 'tearing-your-hair-out-whilst-vomiting' emoticon when you need one?...

More stuff for the record: GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' was broadcast on 4 Music the other night, framed at the original 2.35:1, while BLADE has now migrated to Viva where it was shown last night at the original 2.35:1, though only letterboxed within a 4:3 frame, not 16:9 enhanced.

By the way, am I the only one still reading this thread? It's starting to get lonely around here...

Keep it up Libretio. Love checking out what's coming up in OAR TV land. Do you need us to keep coming on and holding your hand, telling you how much you are wanted?

Page Eight is in 2.35:1, which isn't a surprise given all the publicity for it, but it looks to be shot in Panavision which is nice, and showed up well when Bill Nighy and Rachel Weisz were having a drink early on.

Well, we all need to feel wuvved sometime, right?

Nah, it's just that I'd been the only one posting for a few days, and the tumbleweeds had started getting in the way! Sometimes, even when others don't post, you forget you aren't posting in a vacuum, and that somebody is still reading this stuff, even if they don't post. Call me insecure, if you like ("You're insecure!", I hear you all cry).

As I understand it, PAGE EIGHT was shot on HD with a new breed of Hawk anamorphic lenses, whose internal 'squeeze' isn't as radical as traditional anamorphic lenses, but can squash 2.35:1 worth of visual info into a native HD 1.78:1 frame, to be 'unsqueezed' in post and printed to whatever format is necessary for theatrical distribution. Most HD productions simply shoot at 1.78:1 and crop the top and bottom, thereby compromising picture quality.

Am I not a font of invaluable info? (I often hear people calling me a 'font' - unless, of course, I've misheard them...).

PRIMAL premiered on Film 4 cropped to 1.78:1, but this isn't entirely unexpected. The US DVD is properly framed at 2.35:1, but the UK Blu-ray is cropped to 1.78:1 (I'm assuming the UK DVD is the same, though I haven't been able to confirm that). If Film 4 got their materials from a UK source, then the cropping/reframing is sad, but inevitable.

I was disappointed with Primal's aspect ratio. It's still on my Sky HD box. Will give it a go later.

I made a boob.

(The first person who says: "What, another one?" will be shot at dawn)

Actually, it's not that much of a boob. Who knew Tom Selleck would take the lead in a TV movie remake of the 1970 scope western MONTE WALSH? Not me, that's fer sure. But it is, indeed, the TV version which has been playing of late on 5 USA, properly framed at the original 1.78:1. So please ignore the film currently mentioned in Friday's listings, which I can't remove because of the ridiculous restrictions on people editing their own posts...

All single men will be very grateful if you can put it on the market

I've had a thought about this weekly list, but it'd require a bit of extra work - of adding a marker to state whether films are regularly shown correctly or regularly shown incorrectly, or whether it's a premiere so it could go either way.

Funnily enough, that's something I've thought about over the last couple of months, but which I decided not to implement, since it would probably just muddy the waters. As we've seen with BLADE recently, the ratio can change from one broadcast to another, so any such markings could be viewed as misleading in some cases. It opens an unnecessary minefield which will probably fail more times than it succeeds, if you see what I mean.

The listings are a guide only, intended to warn viewers beforehand about what they ought to be seeing, and to decide for themselves if they want to continue viewing if the broadcast version falls short.

Of course, if you'd like to pay me an ongoing wage, I'd be happy to dress the whole thing up with markings, wallpaper, curtains, the lot...

It's much better when films on TV fill the whole screen. Those black bars really irritate me (and my family and friends) and make me wonder why I ever bothered getting a top-of-the-range widescreen TV.

This is quite a good explanation of why your top end TV was a good choice.

And that proves exactly why none of you should be allowed to own a TV. Please pack it back up and take it back to the shop for a refund. I'm sure they will oblige.

In which case why doesn't the area around your TV screen that doesn't have a TV picture on irritate you also?

Looks like he/she is a hit and run poster - pretends to be controversial and then never returns.

When I bought my 40 inch widescreen TV, I assumed that when watching TV the entire screen would be filled all of the time. When channels broadcast films with black bars at the top and bottom, a significant proportion of the screen is wasted (or at least that's how I see it) and I'm not getting TV in the 40 inch widescreen glory that I thought I'd paid for.

And that proves exactly why none of you should be allowed to own a TV. Please pack it back up and take it back to the shop for a refund. I'm sure they will oblige.
Are you always rude to people who don't share your opinions?

Did you look at the 2 minute video on the link I posted in #1145, which shows why it's not wasted? In fact, why it's more gloriously widescreen then than the rest of the time?
