Its all the black space in the cinema that annoys me!

Seriously the ignorance of some people is astonishing, the poor old director and his cameraman work hard to frame the action and then some fool at home wants that all thrown out of the window cos they don't like narrow black bars (here's a hint watch the tv in the dark)

To be fair, shouldn't you have know that would be the case? Most blu ray movies, designed for these TVs will have black bars, as do most Sky movies and Channel 4 films (& most BBC ones now too).

Katie, your comments are going to be viewed as naive at best, or trolling at worst, designed to rile contributors to this thread (whose purpose is very obvious to anyone who has read enough of it). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just naive, but you can't be surprised by some of the sharp-edged replies to your statement. You're entitled to your opinion, of course ("That's big of you!", I hear you mutter ), but maybe that's the subject of another thread?...

Films have been broadcast like that prior to you getting your big TV, so how on earth could you assume that?

The BBC is all over the place on the letterboxing issues these days, but BECOMING JANE premiered at 2.35:1 on BBC 4 last night. Pity the same couldn't be said for EXILED on Friday (which I thought was a load of old rubbish when I saw it on DVD, symptomatic of all that's wrong with current Hong Kong cinema, but my opinion only matters to me, and someone else seeing it at the proper dimensions may have thought it was the bog's dollocks...).

Duplicity started off in 2.35:1, but then reverted back to 16:9 after the opening credits. Gah, it's like being back in the 80s.

Epic fail for ITV. As usual.

Thanks for that note on DUPLICITY, Monsieur Fever*. I was just about to come on here asking for confirmation one way or the other.

* No, I don't know why I came over all 'French' there, either...

The first 10 odd minutes of The Bridge at Ramagen was in 2.35:1 on Channel 5 but then after the opening credits we went straight to a break and when we came back, it was in 4:3.

Slightly off topic but was anyone watching Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii? it was 4:3 but still "stretched" widthways. Twas filmed 1.37 : 1 so I'm slightly at a loss.

Or perhaps just 2 or 3 years ago.

If it was the 80's it would be 4:3 NTSC converted TV Versions- how we forget.

You can't genuinely expect any broadcaster to go and get new versions of all the films they have licenced overnight .

Licences run for several years and films bought before any decision to run films in 2.35:1 came about will be in 16:9 at best for several more years.

And I wouldn't expect ITV to run peaktime 2.35:1 movies too often anyway.

The plebs would whinge like some of the posters on this thread.

Some digital receivers display such material in 'pillarboxed' format, with the 1.37:1 (or 1.33:1) material pillared within the 16:9 frame, while others stretch it outward in the manner you describe, occasioning some adjustments of your TV settings. Dunno why that should be. I prefer the pillarboxing to the stretching, myself.

The slot, thankfully, makes no odds to any of the terrestrial broadcasters. If they have a 2.35:1 print, it's gone out at any time of day on all channels - they don't just restrict them to certain times, although a few years ago, I once thought that might be the case if they were to broadcast such prints.

Dunno if anyone else noticed, but THE FIFTH ELEMENT (which has been screened on TV more times than the Six o'Clock News) was screened at the original 2.35:1 ratio on 5* last night.

Yes, Channel 5 and 5* have both shown The Fifth Element recently in the correct OAR. Did someone mention on here not long ago though that a repeat on 5* was cropped though, or was that for a different film?

ITV 1 have also shown Mrs Doubtfire in 2.35:1 in the afternoon and in HD but it's strange that other 20th Century Fox films have been shown in HD but cropped to 1.85:1, like the Star Wars ones for example.

Is it BLADE you're thinking of? That one was screened on C5 recently at 2.35:1, then played on either 5 USA or 5* a week later, cropped to 1.78:1.

Mind you, that could be have been one of several titles, given the inconsistency which prevails in TV land these days...

Sadly, ICE STATION ZEBRA was cropped to 1.78:1 on C4 yesterday, the same as every other terrestrial broadcast of this particular title. I've only ever seen a 2.35:1 print on the TCM channel, taken from 35mm elements (rather than the original 70mm), but that was letterboxed within the 4:3 frame, hardly ideal.

Also, for some unfathomable reason, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA was cropped to 1.78:1 on Film 4 (I'm assuming FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS suffered the same fate on the same channel), just as it was when it premiered on C4. Dunno what happened here, but such major titles deserve MUCH better treatment than this...

A coupla head-scratchers, and no mistake.

KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA (BBC 2) and ZULU DAWN C5) both 'premiered' at 2.35:1 on terrestrial TV today. Not that TV is the best place to see Krakatoa, since it was shot in 65mm and optimised for Cinerama presentations. But since no such presentations are ever likely down at your local cattleplex, this was the bext best thing.

No complaints here.

Probably old news, but Virgin Queen was 2.55:1 on Film4 and Spartacus was cropped to 16:9.

If we're looking for nuggets, Michael Clayton on BBC 1 was 2.35:1. And damned fine it looked too.

How does shooting in 65mm get optimised for Cinerama? I noticed the Cinerama reference in the Krakatoa credits but it evidently wasn't shot on three cameras, so I didn't know what to make of it.

Calendar Girls in 2.35:1 on BBC2. Is that the first time it's been in 2.35:1?
