Thanks to me going slightly off-topic in the first place, we might be in danger of a slap on the wrist from the Powers That Be (gawd bless 'em!). So, as Paddy says, back on topic with some cropped/reframed movies on DVD, both of them from Momentum:

SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE has, of course, been out on disc for about 200 years, but I just rented it yesterday as an alternative to the always-cropped version on the BBC, only to find the DVD was just as cropped! This didn't help my opinion of the film which was, shall we say... less than generous.

Much better, but no less cropped is the 2009 Thai actioner THE SANCTUARY (สามพันโบก), which Momentum released in this country just recently under the title THE WARRIOR'S PATH. Not the best example of Thai action cinema, but still worth seeing at its most optimum. Sadly, Momentum's disc is best avoided...

Yes, it is unfortunately, which is why I have the R1 NTSC version, the Korean is also OAR. Talking of poor quality discs, Don't Look Now has recently been restored on blu ray, including the sound which was useless on the DVD, review here.

DLN is one of those 'classic' films whose reputation has completely passed me by (like ALIEN, ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE SHINING - all of them 'ugh!'). Very well done, the lot of 'em, but just not my cup o'bromide. Still, the BR version of DLN looks to be a worthwhile purchase for fans of the film. And nice to see the original mono sound has been retained, with no tarted-up 5.1 remix.

By the way, it turns out ALAMAR (To the Sea) shouldn't have been included in my previous 'scope-films-on-TV' listings, since a quick online check confirms it was shot and exhibited at 1.85:1. Sorry about that!

I didn't like DLN, but the picture quality wasn't exactly fantastic:

IMAX for the latter?

(checks IMDB)

Yep. It's classed as that ratio for "some scenes". I've only ever seen a short film of around 30 mins in IMAX so can't comment on a blockbuster.

Is that like what they did with Tron: Legacy? They had mixed ratios for that too.

DVDfever got it exactly right: All of the films listed here are either 2.35:1 (pre-1971) or 2.39:1 (1971 onwards), and any deviation from that is noted in those cases where it's warranted.

In the case of Transformers 2 (and THE DARK KNIGHT, etc.), the film was shot anamorphic 35mm for a 2.39:1 release print, but some scenes were shot in IMAX and presented that way - in a different aspect ratio - for certain sequences (though only if you saw it in an IMAX cinema - 'regular' venues screened it at 2.39:1 throughout).

Not sure if C4 will play the film at one ratio, like the DVD, or open it out for the IMAX scenes, as in the BR (or am I getting mixed up with THE DARK KNIGHT?).

Yes, It's The Dark Knight BR that opens up the IMAX scenes. I've got both on BR, although TF2 is like sitting in a metal dustbin for two hours, and someone beating it with a stick!

Thanks for that confirmation - I knew it was one or the other, but I was too bleedin' lazy to look it up!!

HIGHLANDER: THE SOURCE screened at 2.39:1 very late on BBC 1 last night/this morning.

I would say C4 would just show TF2 in 2.35:1 throughout as otherwise it'd just confuse the viewers and you can't get IMAX on TV anyway so it wouldn't work anyway.

How does it work on an IMAX screen? Do you get cues to put the glasses on at certain moments?

Between IMAX and 3-D and various other tech marvels of the 21st century, it's no wonder some people get 'em mixed up...

IMAX is simply 15-perf 65/70mm film run vertically through a camera and projector, unlike 4-perf 35mm film which runs horizontally through the same devices. Naturally, 15-perf produces COLOSSAL images, but it's strictly 2-D, so no glasses are needed. In the case of THE DARK KNIGHT, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN and the upcoming THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, the films were projected onto IMAX in a letterboxed format (2.39:1 within the native 15-perf 1.44:1 frame), and then 'opened up' to full 1.44 at the relevant moments. It must have been quite a sight for those lucky enough to see them in appropriate venues.

IMAX 3-D uses two 15-perf cameras to record the left-right images (or, in an increasing number of cases, the film is shot on HD and printed to 15-perf film). TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON was shot 3-D in a number of photographic processes and then presented in IMAX cinemas in letterboxed format, wrapped across the HUGE 1.44:1 frame.

So, glasses are only needed for 3-D presentations, whether IMAX or 'regular' venues. Hope that helps!

A couple of things I missed recently:

FROST/NIXON premiered at 2.39:1 on BBC 2, which was most welcome. Directly afterward on the same channel, however, EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION was cropped to buggery and beyond. The fact that it had been shot and exhibited at the scope ratio came as news to me, which is why it didn't make it into my Friday list for that particular week, but the title card was clearly letterboxed at the appropriate ratio and the rest of the film was clearly cropped at either side. Picture quality was terrible, too, though that may have had something to do with the shooting format (either HD or 16mm - I'd be VERY surprised if this was shot 35mm).

2.35:1 movies across the Freeview platform for the coming week (15 - 21 October):

'Twill be interesting to see whether Film 4's presentation of BAD EDUCATION (Tuesday) improves upon the back-to-front mess recently broadcast on BBC 2, or whether the 1.85:1 scenes are still shown at 2.00:1 and the 2.39:1 scenes are cropped to 1.78:1 (!). Fingers crossed for something better, eh?

Oh, and I haven't included TOY STORY on Channel 5, even though this 1.85:1 movie was recently re-released in 3-D format. It wasn't actually designed for 3-D in the first place, so it seems churlish to list it as a '3-D' movie after the fact.

Just had a reply from the BBC about showing 16:9 versions of Absolute Power and Deja Vu on BBC1 Scotland, which were both broadcast later than the other BBC1s. I don't know why they can't send a copy of the HD print over to BBC1 Scotland, though.

"Thank you for your e-mail. Your comments were passed to the Scheduling Manager, who has asked that I forward his response as follows:

"In both instances, Network BBC One transmitted copies of HD masters of both films - both HD versions had the picture format of 2.35:1 .
Thus, these versions were transmitted on both BBC One HD and BBC One SD, and subsequently any other nation transmitting the same output as network.

The versions transmitted on BBC1 Scotland originated from the SD versions of both films - these versions were in 16:9".

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to contact us."
In order to avoid any future cock-ups like that for the nations, I now only watch BBC ONE HD no matter what the programme is. Any local programming I want to watch, (and that isn't very often, believe me), will be watched on BBC ONE on Freeview.
Not much sign of an apology there--more a case of 'so get used to it!'.
I finally got a reply, about 3-4 weeks ago but forgot to post it here, about all this:

"Dear Mr Robinson,

I am the BBC Complaints Advisor who handles audience comments about BBC Scheduling and Programme Acquisitions. I am writing with regards to an issue you raised some time ago about the film Absolute Power. I’m sorry for the long delay in responding, we’ve been experiencing somewhat of a backlog with our audience contacts lately but I appreciate this is not the service our audience would or should expect from the BBC.

I’ve had an opportunity to review the previous correspondence and I’m sorry that the crux of your original complaint was misunderstood. Having investigated your concerns and spoken to our Programme Acquisitions department I would like to explain what happened. We generally aim to broadcast our films, and other material, in a 16:9 ratio. However, on this occasion Absolute Power was a late delivery to the BBC on the very day of broadcast in a 21:9 ratio – or as you quite rightly expressed, 2.35:1 format. We therefore didn’t have time to prepare the film for a 16:9 broadcast on network and had to go with it as it was delivered. While the nations and regions will usually use the same feed as network, on this occasion BBC Scotland were able to prepare the film to 16:9 format which is why you noticed a difference in the two broadcasts. I’d like to apologise for any confusion over this matter and thank you for raising this with us. I hope my response goes some way to explaining the situation.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us and I appreciate your patience in awaiting my response.

Yours sincerely,
Paul Kettle
BBC Audience Services"

So they actively create 16:9 versions when they have the correct version to hand?! That's about as mental as it gets!

I think Mr. Kettle has still misunderstood the point that you would have preferred the 2.35:1 version to be shown in Scotland rather than the cropped 16:9 print. And the argument that ABSOLUTE POWER arrived 'too late' for them to reconfigure the presentation is bogus, given the large number of letterboxed 2.35:1 presentations which have cropped up all over the BBC in recent months.

Other news: Surprisingly, MITHYA arrived on C4 last night in a cropped 1.78:1 version, an unusual blot in what has so far been a very interesting season of new Indian cinema. The film was shot 35mm anamorphic, too, so this was real cropping, not simply a reframing of a Super 35 (or HD) frame.

Indeed, but then they don't always hire the brightest of people.

Whenever you mention to them that you like their 2.35:1 broadcasts, they just babble on about their intention to show as many as possible in 16:9, since they're still stuck in the stone age.

I'm sure they've shown this film before, so would've had a cropped 16:9 print anyway.

It was made on a computer with vector graphics. It can and will be adapted to another new form of movie viewing.

Heck, in the US, pan and scan copies actually showed more picture (top and bottom) than their OAR counterparts.

That's true, but it wasn't specifically designed for 3-D from the outset, if you see what I mean. Part of the reason the 3-D conversion for CLASH OF THE TITANS was received with such vitriol is that the 3-D was added 'after the fact', so individual shots weren't created with 3-D in mind. Stereoscopic photography has to take depth perception into account in a way that simply isn't necessary in 2-D (you still compose 'in depth' for 2-D, but it's a different discipline altogether).

Mind you, even when Pixar does design movies in 3-D from the outset, they might just as well not bother. It infuriates me when I see TOY STORY 3 being held up as an example of 'good' 3-D when it's actually nothing of the kind - other than a bit of depth in the images, the 3-D serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. They don't have to throw things out of the screen every five minutes, but if the 3-D amounts to nothing more than visual wallpaper, then why should anyone pay an obscene surcharge for the privilege of seeing a film that might just as well have been presented in 2-D from the outset?

'Subtle' 3-D and ridiculous surcharges are doing the 3-D boom no favours whatsoever.

So there.

Well, Film 4's version of BAD EDUCATION did preserve the various aspect ratios of the original theatrical presentation, but they were all striped across the top of the 16:9 frame to accommodate the subtitles in the lower matte which, as anyone who remembers my ravings from the C4 forums, I hate with an absolute vengeance. Thank god I've got the DVD (and will be buying the BR as soon as one becomes available).

Fallen is 2.35:1 across all BBC1s (except NI who aren't showing it) and even Scotland who've started a bit later, so aren't showing the networked version, and it was a different time of broadcast which resulted in Absolute Power and Deja Vu showing in 16:9 instead.

Have they listened, finally?
