Might be a bit OT but what are more4 doing this evening? The Untouchables is in what looks to be almost the original aspect, but with (at least) the top and bottom scanlines wrapped over (sort of like an old CRT with field collapse) and the bottom leg of the 4 from the more 4 DOG visible in the top corner. Proper weird, and technically crap which I guess is the point of this thread.

I didn't check into THE UNTOUCHABLES because I assumed it would be shown OAR, as always. But I'm not entirely sure what you're describing. The bottom of the More 4 dog is almost always visible within the 2.35:1 frame. Could you possibly clarify? Ta very glad.

Perhaps that's just what it was. 2.35:1 broadcast 16:9 with the dog in the same place. They should turn it off though no?

More4 and E4 never do.

No, they never do. I've noticed an improvement on More4 though. The DOG used to change according to the background so it was always visible, i.e. it was white against a black background and vice versa. Now it's black all the time, so it disappears on a black background. I've always found it's most obtrusive when the picture is dark (which is why BBC FOUR drama is now a dead loss for me) so it's considerably better than it was.

Presumably somebody is listening to complaints. Just a bit more to go now and it will be perfect!

E4's DOG is too far in from the left still, it would be nice if they moved it right into the corner like for More 4 and made it the same colour. Don't get me started on 4 Music's DOG...!

Certainly E4 HD's DOG should be smaller and more to the left, it's too big for an HD channel.

The E4 DOG has always been in the very left corner, no point in complaining about that.

They've been running the same James Bond prints for so long, I'm surprised the tape hasn't snapped! Who's watching the damned things, anyways?

More OAR goodness on other channels this morning - BYE BYE BIRDIE on BBC 2, and THE THIEF LORD on ITV 2. Good times.

By the way, Dar, are you sure it was SPACE COWBOYS on ITV 4 this morning and not MISSION TO MARS? It's the latter title that was scheduled for broadcast on that channel today, and has been screened OAR a number of times before.

Easy to see how they might get confused, though.

New to this forum.

Does anybody know why Channel Four show their films squeezed on freeview, no matter how hard I fiddle about with the DVR and TV settings I can't get a decent letterbox image for films shot in cinemascope but everything seems fine on Channel 4 plus one

Does anybody know if Movies4Men actually show their films in the correct OAR or are they over scanned full screen versions matted to fit a 16:9 broadcast.

Welcome! Mind you, your username is a bit of a worry...

I'm assuming you're viewing on a 16:9 screen? If so, I can only suggest that if every other channel (including C4 +1) displays 'scope movies correctly (that's to say, letterboxed within the 16:9 frame), then there MUST be a fault with your DVR.

I can only ask: Are you absolutely certain all your equipment is set to '16:9' (or 'full' or the nearest equivalent)?

As usual at this time of the year, the BBC insisted on screening their pathetically cropped version of HALLOWEEN. If there's one film that really needs to be seen at its full Panavision dimensions, it's this one.

Pity the poor fools who 'saw' it for the first time on BBC 2 last night and thought they'd gotten The Real Deal...

Agreed. And on the Panavision side of things, presuming the series is shown the same way as the trailers, Top Boy (Mon-Thurs, C4, 10pm), will be in 2.35:1 Panavision.

Ta for that confirmation.

Kicked yourself for missing it, eh? Wouldn't have anything to do with the word 'Lesbian' in the title, would it?...

Now that they're broadcasting in 16:9, could you confirm it was a 'proper' 16:9 version, with the 2.39:1 image letterboxed within the 1.78:1 frame? Ta.

True to the trailers, the first episode of TOP BOY went out framed at 2.35:1 on C4 last night. Online reports confirm it was shot with HD cameras. It will probably be edited into a feature-length version for theatrical release in non-domestic markets, which isn't unusual for one-off, multi-episode TV dramas these days (recent French film CARLOS developed from the very same TV background, shooting 2-perf 35mm for TV and theatrical release).

Following on from my recent post concerning UK DVD versions of SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE and THE WARRIOR'S PATH, both from Momentum, the same company has been at it again:

I rented New Zealand horror THE DEVIL'S ROCK yesterday, and it was cropped from 2.39:1 to 1.78:1, despite the fact the film is clearly framed at 2.39:1 on the cameras which we see being employed on-set during the accompanying 'Making of' documentary. I'm beginning to wonder if Momentum has a policy of supplying cropped editions of such films wherever possible, and if there's an e-mail contact address, I'll be writing to them forthwith to ask about this very thing. Watch this space.

I've been watching it, but it does have a lot that could be cut out to get to the meat of the story so a film of around 2hrs would be easy enough to put together.
