Now that they're broadcasting in 16:9, could you confirm it was a 'proper' 16:9 version, with the 2.39:1 image letterboxed within the 1.78:1 frame? Ta.
ITV 2 are showing Payback cropped to 1.85:1 though. |

Thanks for that confirmation, Paddy.
For the record, SADDLE THE WIND cropped to 1.78:1 on Film 4 yesterday. |

New to this forum.
Does anybody know if Movies4Men actually show their films in the correct OAR or are they over scanned full screen versions matted to fit a 16:9 broadcast. |

V for Vendetta is again cropped to 16:9 on BBC2, but so far, Training Day is still in 2.35:1 on ITV. I say 'so far' because I couldn't remember if there were any proper opening credits, but there don't seem to be at this point.

Pity about V FOR VENDETTA, which is one of my favourite films of the last ten years, and SO appropriate at this time in history, given the activities of the current government (and some of the more fascistic tendencies of the previous government, too). [sharp intake of breath] Mustn't get too political...

A big hand to BBC 2, which screened perennial Sunday afternoon favourite THE COCKLESHELL HEROES in all its CinemaScope glory for the first time ever on terrestrial TV. It's only taken 56 years, but hey!, who's counting?!...

AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY still showing on C5 in 2.35:1, some time after the credits ended. Lame print, though. Very blurry.

Yes, Cockleshell Heores and Austin Powers in OAR, only problem is the copy of Austin Powers looks like very bad NTSC conversion, blurry, jumpy and the sound is also very weird. At least Channel 5 managed to show it in OAR, something Channel 4 haven't been able to do the many times they have shown it.

Ronin on FX is being shown in 2.35:1. Paris Lockdown(FX) was shown in the correct ratio on Friday as well.

Any news on aspect ratio for Let The Right One In and Thirst? They are being shown on Ch4 this coming Saturday. Max Payne looked very good in HD. Shame the film itself is so poor. Even Mile Kunis couldn't save it for me.

As for THIRST, I assume this is the 2009 S.Korean* film? If that's the case, then it was filmed 2.39:1 so it should be broadcast that way, too. * Two other 'scope' films of fairly recent vintage with the same title are the Australian film of 1979, and an Israel/Palestine co-production from 2004. I just thought I'd mention them in case I'd assumed wrongly about the Korean film. And because I'm a clever clogs. |

LTROI was on Film4 a while back but I didn't see it then. It's a fantastic film (I wouldn't give the US remake the time of day) so I hope it wasn't cropped.
The DVD of LTROI is definitely 2.35 : 1. Channel 4 are usually very good with OAR so I'm confident they will get it right. Don't know what Thirst was originally filmed in. I saw it in 16:9 but IMDB has it as 2.35 : 1 also. The US is not a bad film really. But it can't hold a candle to the Swedish original. I bought the novel from Amazon because the DVD commentary from the writer talks about what they couldn't put in. The two together make a very good pairing. |

LTROI was, indeed, screened at the original 2.39:1 ratio by Film 4, so you can expect the same treatment this Saturday (though don't quote me on that - even the most reliable broadcasters can have an unexpected wobble on occasion).

I saw review saying that the US version was okay, and even saw one review give it 4/5, but I saw a clip and just thought, "What's the point?" The original was fantastic, so why sully my impression of it?

I saw LET ME IN before I saw the original LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and didn't think there was much between them in terms of enjoyment factor. I didn't think either one was a masterpiece, but the remake was remarkably sober and as true to the original as it could be.
I just wish the market had allowed the original version to go into cinemas and reap all the financial rewards it (probably) deserved, rather than an unnecessary English-language remake. It's a source of great sadness to me that all foreign language movies - no matter how commercial - are sidelined as 'Art house' fare in the UK and US and thereby prone to struggle within the market. Bit of a surprise last night: 5* screened SHANGHAI NOON at something approximating the original 2.39:1 ratio. |

By the way, apologies for consistently missing OPERATION CROSSBOW from the weekly listings - I keep getting it mixed up with another regular visitor to the C4 platform, OPERATION AMSTERDAM, which is framed at 1.66:1. It's there in the latest listing, but only just...
