THE RED BARON was 2.39:1 on BBC 2 yesterday, but the film was rated 12 on film and video, so gawd knows what was edited out of it for the afternoon screening. I don't recall this one ever having been screened post-watershed by the dear old Beeb. More unusually, More 4 premiered a cropped/reframed 1.78:1 version of THE NATIVITY STORY this morning. How much ya wanna bet the Film 4 screening is restored to 2.39:1?... |

2.35:1 movies across the Freeview platform for the coming week (24 - 30 December):
BBC 4 is screening a series of epics from the 1950's and 60's next week, beginning with a Timeshift documentary about the phenomenon of big (usually Biblical) films from this period. The question is: Will the films themselves be shown at anything like the original aspect ratio? The Timeshift programme will discuss the use of CinemaScope and 65mm, but will we see the films that way? LAND OF THE PHARAOHS will most likely be OK, since it's been screened in scope on BBC 2, but will THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE be shown at any ratio resembling the original 2.76:1? Only time will tell. Saturday (Christmas Eve) ANNA AND THE KING (Film 4) [Panavision] THE BOURNE IDENTITY (ITV 2) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE (BBC 1) DEMOLITION MAN (ITV 4) [Panavision] FROM HELL (5*) [Panavision] G-FORCE (BBC 1) [Super 35 / CGI Widescreen / 3-D] HAIRSPRAY (C4) JAWS: THE REVENGE (ITV 4) LAND OF THE PHARAOHS (BBC 4) [CinemaScope (2.55:1)] LAST OF THE DOGMEN (5 USA) [Panavision] NANNY McPHEE (ITV 2) THE POLAR EXPRESS (ITV 1) [CGI Widescreen / IMAX DMR 3-D] SANTA CLAUS (ITV 1 / ITV 3) [J-D-C Scope] THE SCORPION KING (ITV 2) SON OF RAMBOW (BBC 3) [Panavision] SPARTACUS (ITV 1) [Super Technirama 70 (2.21:1)] THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (Film 4) STAR TREK (Film 4) [Panavision] Sunday (Christmas Day) ANNIE (E4) [Panavision] ARMAGEDDON (BBC 3) [Panavision] THE BOURNE SUPREMACY (ITV 2) BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (Film 4) [Panavision] EL CID (BBC 4) [Super Technirama 70 (2.21:1)] FRED CLAUS (Film 4) GARDEN STATE (Film 4) HAPPY FEET (ITV 1) [CGI Widescreen] INDEPENDENCE DAY (E4) JACK FROST (ITV 2) [Panavision] KUNG FU PANDA (BBC 1) [CGI Widescreen] LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (5*) [Super Panavision 70 (2.21:1)] MONSTERS VS. The Masque Of The Red Death (1964) -- Horror Channel. I am probably wrong but I think this is the first time any free to air channel (on Freesat) has screened this one in its full Panavision glory, there is so much detail on the side of the frames that gets omitted when the BBC trawl's out its 1:85 print.
The Heroes Of Telemark is available in its Panavision aspect ratio as a Daily Mail DVD, it was issued with the paper about three years. The print was in ok condition, a nice little bonus is a copy of 'A Matter of Life and Death' that came with it. Should be easy to find in charity shops or carboot sales |

Huge disappointment from the BBC over the last couple of days. After months of cinemascopic goodness, we get THE YOUNG VICTORIA and TAMARA DREWE cropped/reframed to hell and back. I hope this doesn't suggest a trend. It's especially worrying in light of the 'epics' mini-season due to begin on BBC 4. No doubt I'll be accused of needlessly worrying, but it's Christmas, so I'm allowed to worry... ![]() Quote:
Do you know if this one's been shown in 2.35:1 before, please? I'm curious about seeing it, but if it's not going to be in 2.35:1 then it's a late one to stay up for (starts 12.45am, ends 2.30am). Ta.

Oh, and joy to the world! SANTA CLAUS broadcast at the original 2.39:1 on ITV 1 this morning.
That's either a sign of the Second Coming or the Apocalypse. Take yer pick, kiddies... |

Tamara Drewe - The film actually played quite well in a compromised crop. Without lowering the tone it mean't we saw a lot more of Gemmer Atherton's backside in a larger frame.
Tamara Drewe, Nativity and The Young Victoria all received funding from the BBC and the films were probably shot for a 16:9 format and the directors had the option to present the films 21:9 for theatrical screenings. I suspect that was the same shooting format for Joyeux Noel. With modern films it is best to check the credits to see who helped fund the films , and with european titles a lot of them get money from network stations who pre-buy the rights before production even starts. That saves the networks having to buy the rights and probably paying more for them as a percenage of the box office. There was also a 16:9 fund from the EU in the late 1990s to develop and push forward the intregation of a standard format. |

I haven't seen Nativity, but 2.35:1 films will have been filmed for 2.35:1, so 16:9 open-matte is always a compromise, not something they've specifically shot for.Quote:

According to IMDB there was Super35 in there somewhere, but as the opening credits began and as the camera approached a lad standing in front of a blackboard, it was like one of those TV broadcasts from the 80s where the black bars are slowly zoomed in upon.Quote:

That was for TV programmes. nothing to do with films.

It was open-matte, not cropped, so you're wrong.

ITV4 screened Jaws 4 in bog standard 16:9 last night.
Re Masque of the Red Death on Horror Channel - watched this, a beautiful print. Horror have rights to 30 Studio Canal titles and they all appear to be as faithful as one could hope for, the Devil Rides Out is also being shown 2.35:1. |

Monsters Vs Aliens is in 2.35:1 Think animated films have only been in this format in the last few years.
