MOTRD is MGM or did you just forget the new paragraph?

The Devil Rides Out should not be 2.35:1.
It's likely 1.66:1 although has been seen as wide as 1.85

Can't think of many Studio Canal Hammer films that should be 2.35:1

Dracula Prince of Darkness (Bluray in Feb)
Rasputin (although thats not exactly 2.35 IIRC)
She

Hmm, tDRO is listed as 1.66:1 on IMDB maybe it was the opening credits only with a mask (I didn't actually watch the film), anyway its on again on January 1st. So I'll watch it then.

Don't watch The Horror Channel much.
Do they broadcast in anamorphic 16:9 for the widescreen films or are they like TCM and still playing letterboxed 4:3 over 13 years after they should have changed?

Anamorphic, the res is only 544x576 on Horror & 480x576 on Horror+1 though.

Strange the ways of the BBC. Just when I post a message complaining about a sudden rash of cropped films, they go and show a shedload of OAR epics (unfortunately, not EL CID, which someone else mentioned...). Aside from those already noted in previous posts, we've had THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, LAND OF THE PHARAOHS, HAPPY FEET (ITV 1), KUNG FU PANDA, BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA and one other (see below).

As has already been mentioned, TDRO was most definitely 1.66:1, though it can probably be reframed at 1.78:1 for TV without losing anything too vital around the edges.

Yes, SON OF RAMBOW was screened at the original 2.39:1, and looked quite lovely, too. The Radio Times describes the BBC 4 showing as a premiere, though I expect you'll see it on BBC 1 or 2 in due course.

CWACOM is most definitely scope (2.39:1).

RASPUTIN: THE MAD MONK was shot in CinemaScope and is therefore 2.35:1. Confusion may have been generated by Anchor Bay's US DVD, which cropped the edges of the frame to hide distortions created by the type of CinemaScope lenses employed during production. The distortions were 'flattened out' on the huge curving screens which existed at the time, but such lenses were rendered obsolete by contemporary developments in anamorphic cinematography and didn't last long (for some reason, however, you can see similar distortions at the frame-edges of several Jackie Chan films from the 1980's).

The frame-edges of R:TMM shouldn't have been cropped by Anchor Bay, since they weren't that much of a distraction at all, but AB were prone to such mistakes at the time, culminating in their ruinous DVD release of SUSPIRIA, which performed a hideous hatchet job on that film's soundtrack, thereby killing it stone dead...

It could have been worse. They might have shown Blake Edwards' "6½". Or even 85 DALMATIANS, 16 PACES TO BAKER STREET and 16500 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA.

At a push, they might even have screened FANTASTIC TWO AND A HALF, TWO POINT FIVE DEGREES OF SEPARATION, ONE AND A HALF MUSKETEERS and 35 DAYS IN PEKING.

And who can forget that timeless masterpiece ONE AND A HALF COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN?

Knowing C5's cheek (and cheapness), we can expect all of these - and more besides! - in the New Year.

One film that did get shown in 2.35:1 this morning? Erm... Beverly Hills Chihuahua. What a waste of a widescreen frame!

Wizard Of Oz on Channel 5 looked over scanned, and that was an academy ratio film.

IN that case , The Devil Rides Out should not have top and bottom borders.
If it has any borders and is shown correctly they will be small ones at the sides but most tv's with overscan on will not see them

BEDTIME STORIES at 2.39:1 on BBC 1.

Yay! Not.

Nurse, the screens...

(I shouldn't really moan about such things, since it makes me sound like an ungrateful cow [!], and because the screening of crap in OAR means there's more chance of good stuff being shown that way in the future. But really, I'd rather have had OAR versions of THE TOWERING INFERNO and THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE than BEDTIME STORIES and BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA).

CUSTER OF THE WEST screened on C5 at something like 2.35:1 (must've used a 35mm element) this afternoon.

C5, eh? Who'da thunk?...

Yes but it was a good idea to question whether The Horror Channel may have been showing it in the wrong ratio.

They are a pretty low budget channel and the quality of The Monster Club was pitiful from what I glimpsed.

Unless it was a film not available on dvd I wouldn't watch it if that was the regular quality level

The BBC première of Tropic Thunder appears to have been shown in OAR. I think any film expected to get a reasonably large audience (family films and blockbuster premières) was shown in OAR and everything else wasn't.

The Towering Inferno was shown on ITV, so it could be a while before that happens. And I do not know about The Fall of The Roman Empire

Perhaps the answer is quite simple. If its an old film, they have had an old print for years (dont know how long they get to show films before somebody else gets a go)and years ago,pre widescreen tvs, then nearly everything shown on TV was cropped.

I recall just afew years back, seeing again and again, "The Battle of Britain" being shown in a terrible cropped version..apart from the opening credits about 5mins in.But at the same time,on German TV,they were showing it in a much better WS version................bit funny though, hearing Michael Caine, speaking German !

MONGOL premiered on BBC 2 last night at the original 2.39:1, whilst ITV 4 screened MAD MAX 2 at the scope ratio for the second (third?) time in a row.

Pity the same can't be said of THE IPCRESS FILE, which is the same ugly-looking cropped print the Beeb has been running for some time now. The colours have faded quite badly on this one - I hope the DVD version looks better!

I'm pleased to see Mongol was shown correctly, as indeed was Tropic Thunder in the last few days, as well as one or two key (animated) films over Christmas. But I think you are being quite polite in calling The Ipcress File ugly. I didn't give it long, but the bit I saw looked...ridiculous.

I have temporary access to Sky and noted that this evening Sky Atlantic is showing The Road To Perdition, and Sky Living The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), both correctly, and without a DOG to boot. And neither are particular Christmas highlights as far as I can tell.

I know the BBC is a big ship to turn around, and it has to weigh complaints from less enlightened viewers, but come ON guys!

Think BBC One only have the 16:9 version, I would imagine when it's shown on another channel in the future, it'll be the 2.35:1 version.

That'll be the DOG then !

I know its an old chestnut and a bit OT but all this discussion about how the director intended it to be seen seems academic while the DOGs are present
