Yes, it is.

Gawd knows how I managed to miss that one, but it's definitely in my own private listing of scope films, so I should have included it. Apologies for that oversight.

For the record, it was shot in 'cropscreen', probably Super 35.

This is a weird release. They put out a 3-disc boxset of the film including, on one disc, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse. Given that this is out on a separate disc indicates that it's not included with Apocalypse Now.

So, £13.99 each for them or £17.99 for the boxset? An easy decision.

But is the main feature still cropped to 2.00:1 at the 'request' of the increasingly idiotic cinematographer Vittorio Storaro? I have no real fancy for the film, but Storaro's ongoing crusade over this issue has caused a great deal of consternation amongst collectors (latest casualty - the upcoming UK BR/DVD release of THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, cropped from 2.35:1 to 2.00:1).

By the way, the 10-episode series Borgen (season one) currently showing on BBC 4 is letterboxed at around 2.20:1, slightly less than the intended 2.35:1 (probably to accommodate the subtitles, though it would be a bogus argument if that was the case, since subs would display perfectly well at the original ratio). I understand all three seasons of this show - thus far - have been shot on HD cameras and letterboxed at the scope ratio on Danish TV.

I included the Spanish drama CELL 211 in the list of scope films recently released on Blu-ray. Having had a chance to see the film and make some further enquiries online, it seems this was actually shot and exhibited at 1.85:1.

Now where did I put my sackcloth and ashes?...

Tsk! Another slapdash release with negligible extras.

Not...

Don't know if anyone noticed but Optimum is no more- was renamed to Studio Canal early in 2011, I hope that means its UK releases will now be the same quality as the French?

It was actually around mid-late 2011. IIRC, the first film to be released under the Studio Canal banner was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Not sure what you mean, jzee. I always thought Optimum was one of the most quality-conscious DVD and Blu-ray suppliers in the UK marketplace. You can generally rely on them to get the AR right for most releases, along with the original theatrical soundtrack, etc. Wouldn't they use the same transfers for the French and the UK releases? Interested to hear your thoughts on this one.

Edited to add: I always thought Optimum was the UK home video arm of Canal Plus anyway, since many - if not all - of their Euro acquisitions feature prominent credits for Canal Plus.

By the way, ROMEO MUST DIE 'premiered' at 2.39:1 on the Viva channel last night (it's missing from my weekly listings - another boob), so tonight's repeat will probably be more of the same. Jet Li kicking seven shades of excrement out of various stuntmen masquerading as baddies! What's not to like?...

It appears Optimum was bought by Studio Canal in 2006, only now are they changing the name to the French parent, as they have done with the German subsidiary Kinowelt

A number of releases & boxsets have generally been done better by Studio Canal in France with better extras, presentation etc., maybe not surprising as that is their home country.

OK, now I getcha. When you said you hoped CP's "UK releases will now be the same quality as the French", I thought you meant there was a disparity in audiovisual quality, but now I understand you mean in terms of extras and presentation.

The French tend to be very respectful of all things cinema, and Canal Plus has a bloody good reputation in this regard. But I agree that some films have been sadly neglected from one country to another. For instance, the French DVD release of VERTIGE - a terrific little horror-thriller - has all kinds of extras, whereas the UK release has nothing but a trailer. Also, the English title - HIGH LANE - is really quite pathetic and gives no indication of the vertigo-inducing thrills on offer throughout the film (if you don't like heights - don't watch!!).

There is a difference sometimes in audio tracks that can be considered as 'extras' such as commentaries but also, for example, music to accompany silent films i.e. on the Alfred Hitchcock boxset, which also came in a brilliant Hitchcock shaped head

sadly no longer availiable, there is a 22 disc set that doesn't look quite as good

Oddly, some of their Blu-ray releases have a hazy look to the print. This has happened on a few of them and there's no reason for it.

Also, it's annoying that they stick to a rigid 12 chapters per film, however long it is. Even the extended version of The Big Blue! (which at least is out in the original language, rather than the dubbed version which was put out first - I bet someone got a kick up the bottom for that decision)

There seems to be a mini-trend for shooting TV productions in Scope - other (British) examples are the last two episodes of Red Riding (2009), Whistle and I'll Come to You (2010) United! and Page Eight (both 2011). I can understand it in cases like the Red Riding trilogy and United! where they were offered for sale as cinema releases outside the UK, but Whistle... is only 50 minutes long and Borgen is a 10-hour miniseries. So I wonder what the point is, if only to piss off people who don't like black bars on screen or to benefit owners of 21:9 TV sets?

One-off dramas like Hidden (BBC1) and the fantasitc The Song of Lunch (BBC2) also aired in 2.35:1. I guess they might do this with a view to airing them on the big screen at some point. I agree it does seem a bit odd, but the format's available to the director, so if they feel they can do something with it, then why not. Would seem a bit odd for the average drama, though.

The Long Duel just started as it should do, but dropped back to 16:9 after the credits finished. #JaniceHadlowfail

E4 needs to decide which version of THE WEDDING PLANNER it intends to show, and then stick with it. The film was shown OAR yesterday, only a few days after a cropped 1.78:1 print was shown on the same channel.

However, RAT RACE continues to get the cropped treatment on Film 4. They have shown it OAR before, so it's a mystery as to why subsequent screenings have all been cropped.

Caught a few mins of that towards the end. Wish I'd caught it from the beginning as it looked interesting. I'll catch it next time.

At £8.49 on Amazon, it can wait.
