Thanks once again.

Galaxy Quest is one of those films with more than one aspect ratio - it starts in 1.85:1 (IIRC) and expands into Scope. I wonder how they show it on TV?

From memory, it starts in 1.33:1 for the first few minutes and expands to 1.85:1 for about 20 minutes afterwards then once they get on the ship it expands again to 2.35:1. The last time BBC ONE shown it, it was in all 3 ratios.

From memory, it starts in 4:3 and expands to 2.35:1, but it's 4:3 inside a 2.35:1 frame and the last time BBC ONE shown it, it was in OAR for it's entirety.
Yep, last two times. Once in the evening and once in the afternoon. Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to do.

As expected, both THE DUCHESS and GALAXY QUEST were broadcast OAR yesterday, along with the others already mentioned.

Flame & Citron now on BBC4 in 2.35:1, and with no logo. I thought they kept the logo for films these days, or is that just BBC3?

Something I've been meaning to ask everyone who reads this thread:

Can everyone see the non-Roman text that I include with relevant titles, such as the Japanese title for OUTRAGE in this week's list of Blu-rays (US section)? Or do such things appear garbled/unreadable on your PC/laptop/whatever? If so, you'll need to re-set your computer to display non-Romanized text.

I'd rather provide the original title as it appears on-screen in the film's country of origin, rather than a transliterated version, since most transliterations tend to change spelling from one source to another. I firmly believe this is the way ALL such films should be listed, including the IMDb, but I understand there may be an issue with the way such characters are displayed on certain computers.

Let me know your thoughts on this one. Can you see the text or not? Enquiring minds...

Many thanks for your responses - I hope others will chime in with their own view. Anyone out there CAN'T see them?

I'm no 'techie'. I know what to do with a computer once it's switched on and set up, but don't ask me to delve inside the 'inner workings' - I simply wouldn't have a clue! But I'm guessing there's something in the workings of this particular website which allows the reproduction of the kind of text I mentioned, something which is absent from others. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about such things could weigh in on the subject? Nothing too technical, mind - remember, you're dealing with a computer thickie.

(Would the person who shouted: "Here! Here!" kindly meet me round back afterwards...)

I can see them. I would have thought each individual browser would have language support settings, and also depends on what sort of basic fonts your system has installed as standard. Installing other programs may add additional language support or fonts to your system too.

I recall having to re-set my own (somewhat antiquated) PC to handle fonts that would allow me to reproduce Chinese, Japanese and other languages in Rich Text format (for example), but I can't recall how I did it!

In Google Chrome, I see a row of six squares. In Opera, I see what looks like Japanese hiragana - if I've got that right, as I'm no expert on the subject.

In any case, this PC will be nine years old this year and is due for replacement/upgrade, probably in the summer.

That's what I get when I try to paste Bengali and Malayalam text into Rich Text format. Not sure if such text would show up on digitalspy, but so far, there haven't been any such films shown on TV to try it out!!

You got it right! Looks like some browsers are more liable to recreate this kind of 'exotic' (for want of a better word) text than others. I'm on IE, which seems to work for the most part.

So long as most readers can see everything I've posted, that's all that matters.

I might be wrong ("What, again?", I hear you cry), but I'm pretty sure the 2.39:1 presentation of DEADLY PURSUIT on BBC 1 last night represented the film's OAR debut on terrestrial TV. Can't imagine why they haven't started showing this under the film's original US title SHOOT TO KILL, since neither one of them is particularly memorable...

FLOWER DRUM SONG at the original 2.35:1 ratio on BBC 2, while PARTY GIRL cropped to 16:9 on Film 4. Bit of a turnaround there...

It doesn't seem that long ago since this was last on, but I've recorded it this time round. Will get round to watching it at some point.

BRIGHTON ROCK also premiered at 2.39:1 on BBC 2 last night.

If THE HONEYMOONERS was screened OAR on Film 4 yesterday (they've screened it that way before on a number of occasions, but I didn't double-check this particular broadcast), then you're in luck, since I'm told the UK DVD has been cropped/reframed to 16:9. Not that it really matters, since this plastic little film looks about the same at ANY particular ratio. But if you're going to watch a load of old rubbish (and believe me, I've watched plenty in my time!), then you at least deserve to see it as originally intended, or not at all...
