Not widescreen, but the original was shown in HD on Channel 4 HD recently, DOGged unfortunately though, although it was not overlapping the image.

I really enjoyed the remake but haven't yet seen the original. Will look out for it, although it was shot in 4:3 so shouldn't be WS.

Yes I know, I just meant slightly OT to the thread.

ITV 4 'premiered' the OAR version of STARGATE this afternoon.

I'm hoping for a similar miracle with THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS on BBC 2 tonight, though I won't be holding my breath...

Although it did for ITV4, I thought I'd seen it broadcast in OAR somewhere before. Could be mistaken though.

And though strictly speaking it's OT for this thread, the picture was awful, on Freeview at least, breaking up every time the encoding got even moderately challenging. As background to doing a crossword in the paper it was fine, but if I'd been watching it properly I'd have had to switch off.

Sadly, the 'miracle' I was expecting (hoping?) for THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS remained unfulfilled. Not only was it cropped to 16:9, the picture quality was bloody awful, with faded colours and a highly unprofessional 'look' to the image. No wonder the BBC shunted it off to the middle of the night...

(Unless otherwise indicated, all films in the following list were projected at 2.35:1 prior to 1971, and at 2.39:1 thereafter)

Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (6 - 12 February):

• FOOTLOOSE (2011)
• FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (2011)
• GARDEN STATE (2004)
• G-FORCE (2009) [3-D]
• LEGEND (1985) [J-D-C Scope]

Scope and 3-D films released on US Blu-ray (7 - 13 February):

NB. The 2008 version of DAY OF THE DEAD has been released on US Blu-ray in a 2-D to 3-D conversion. This wasn't planned as 3-D and probably looks like doggie doo-doo (I could be wrong about that), but it doesn't qualify as bona fide 3-D so I haven't included it in the following list.

• ANONYMOUS (2011)
• BEDTIME STORIES (2008)
• BEN-HUR (1959) [MGM Camera 65] [2.76:1]
• BLOODRAYNE: THE THIRD REICH (2010)
• BREAKING DAWN PART 1 (2011)
• BROTHERHOOD (2010)
• CASINO ROYALE (1967) [Panavision]
• DREAMGIRLS (2006)

• THE LAST SONG (2010)
• THE REBOUND (2009)
• ULTIMATE HEIST [Le Premier Cercle] (2009)

• A WARRIOR'S HEART (2011)

Unusually, BILLY ROSE'S JUMBO was cropped to 16:9 on More 4 yesterday. I coulda sworn C4 has shown this OAR in the past, though I may be wrong about that ("What, yet again?!" I hear you cry).

THE LAST SAMURAI broadcast OAR on C5 last night, while BILLY ROSE'S JUMBO was cropped to 16:9 on More 4.

Also, BLADE was screened at 2.39:1 ratio on Viva. Whereas earlier broadcasts were simply letterboxed within the 4:3 area, this was full 16:9, so the improvement in picture quality was significant. It's on again tonight if you'd like to catch it.

Ta. Just had a look. Is the VIVA logo normally that low? Or have they lowered it to be almost completely within the 2.35:1 film frame because of the ratio?

BBC 1 have shown Stargate in 2.35:1 late night before, but nice to see ITV showing it that way too.

Blade in full 2.35:1 tonight on Viva, but they still haven't changed their DOG. That's where it would have been back when they were 4:3 and you had it streched horizontally to fill the screen. They never changed it's location or size when they switched to 16:9. It should be higher and smaller and thinner.

Indeed, I caught that too. Shame it was tucked away on ITV4. I think they cut a bit, too. I saw the last 30 mins and when the bomb goes off at the end, I'm sure we see his head going all weird, whereas yesterday his eyes just went a bit bright for a split second.

I saw that too, but didn't get round to commenting. Is it a 'premiere'?

Goonies again today on Watch at 2.35:1, and for the part I watched at least, with all the swearing intact. Lo and behold, society has thus far failed to crumble....

BBC 2 showing a Disney film, Summer Magic, in 4:3 at the moment. Should be 1.75:1 according to IMDB and certainly looks wrong.

Not the first incorrect 4:3 screening from the BBC recently. What are they doing?

X2 is one of the few mainstream films I can think of where the 2.39:1 image is used with great attention to widescreen detail, despite the fact it was shot in Super 35, even moreso than the first film (which was shot anamorphic Panavision!). Not that you'd guess from this particular broadcast, mind...
