Was it in 2.35:1?

10000 BC on ITV in 2.35:1 at the mo. I haven't seen it before, and I'm not watching it now, but I remember when C5 showed it, it was 16:9 from the start.

ITV have it on ITV HD so I guess it'll stay in the correct ratio.

DEEP IMPACT was cropped yet again, while 10,000 BC did indeed remain 2.35/9 throughout.

By the way: Mike, what's up with DEEP IMPACT? It's a pretty good film which focuses on the human dimension of a potential world-shattering disaster, and it holds up today as an intelligent, humane Hollywood 'epic', much more so than the silly (but still enjoyable) ARMAGEDDON, which came out at the same time. It's only slightly spoiled by a non-performance from Tea Leoni, who's a bit of a blank in the leading role.

Its the worst sort of limp wristed "disaster movie" where you really don't give a hoot about anyone in it and the action is pretty poor - lacks any real bite or vigour. Tea Leoni sucks life out of the screen whenever she appears. I note her lack of screen credits since. Volcano was another such film.

Although your question was aimed at Mike,if I may make an observation,it's not the quality of the film that's the issue,it's the fact that it's been on too many bloody times! Like Bridget Jones, the Bourne films and others in the ITV stable,BBC just trot it out repeatedly and should rest it for a while.

I much preferred Armageddon (which also gets cropped after the opening credits on BBC). It's much more entertaining.

That said, my favourite moment is when the water is wiping everything away at the end, but especially when it goes through a town square and takes in an old bloke who's sat down facing the camera, seemingly oblivious to what's going on.

Well that as well of course, its quite remarkable how as more films are made fewer are actually shown.

That's gotta have something to do with ITV's inability to premiere films. We've had 4 premieres from ITV (The Boat That Rocked, Fast and Furious 4, Funny People and Cirque Du Something or Other (can't remember the full title)) and we're nearly half way through the year, given that they have deals with 2 studios they must be sitting on a lot of films...

I reckon ITV will play a few during the Olympics to attract the anti-sport crowd. They still have The Dark Knight, The Hangover, The Invention of Lying, Invictus, Sherlock Holmes, Curious George 2 and more..

but a few Universal films are being picked up by Channel 4 (Inglorious Basterds, Bruno) and BBC (Nixon/Frost)

I imagine ITV are going to hold The Dark Knight now until the start of July and premiere it a day or two before The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas. It will guarantee them big numbers.

Am I the only one who isn't fussed about TDKR? Batman Begins was okay but overlong, and TDK but mostly dull with Heath Ledger being good, but Oscar-worthy? No, he only got it because he got dead.

I've not seen it because ITV haven't shown it yet.... I'm not paying money I don't have to buy a film I may or may not like regardless of how the broadcaster treats it...

... and then ruining the endings by squeezing the credits and yapping inane drivel over the end music about tripe I can find out for myself from the listings. Completely ruins the mood of some fine endings to certain films and is worse than not doing OAR, in my opinion.

Killing the credits is the one thing I don't mind, and imo is forgivable compared to killing the entire film...

We are talking about ITV here, well I can't think of a better way to kill the mood of an entire film than to interrupt it every 15 minutes with adverts! I suppose compared to that, credit squeezing and voiceovers and no OAR are minor irritants.

I couldn't care less about commercials either, they have to make money somehow. It's every 15 mins, 1 break per scheduled half hour is the limit for films and tv films (as set by Ofcom/EU laws)

Surrogates premiere on BBC1 last night in 2.35:1. Rather lame film, sadly. 4/10.

Con Air was indeed shown in OAR on bbc3 albeit with that hideous DOG displayed for 110 minutes , but what's the point of Films being made in 2.35/39 AR if the viewer's equipment is designed for 1.85 AR or 1.78?.

When i watch a film i don't want to see black bars - it detracts from the viewing experience (especially in outdoor scenes).

So when a film airs on TV such as Lord Of War and is "cropped" i champion that decision as it suits the 99% and not the 1% who purport to own 21.9 tv sets.

Films i've rec'd and put on dvd due their being "cropped" :

Lord Of War , National Treasure 1&2 , Hot Fuzz , Face/Off , Cirque Du Freak TVA.

Because they were designed to be seen at the cinema?

Having large chunks chopped off the image detracts vastly more IMO. Have a look at these. Click on the links in that post, wait for the pictures to finish downloading, then roll the mouse over the image to see what you are missing with a 16:9 crop:

You'll find that far from everyone wants to see the compromised version because it happens to fill their TV screen. And as you can zoom in a 2.35 image if you really want to and get the effect you are looking for, why insist on everyone else having the choice to see the film properly taken away from them?

You are quite mad. And thankfully, in the minority. 16:9 prints are being phased out as they get new HD masters of 2.35:1 (and similar) ratio films.
