That certainly depends on how precisely it is composed. The first two times I saw BETTY BLUE in a UK cinema, it was projected in 1.75:1 (which in most UK cinemas, was the standard non-Scope projection ratio at the time) and it was very obvious that it was cropped from an intended 1.66:1.

Fortunately, the third time I saw it (my only viewing of the three-hour version intιgrale) it was at the National Film Theatre, as was, and they showed it correctly in 1.66:1.

Mind you, I've seen the NFT get it wrong sometimes. I once saw a French film there called L'UNIQUE (I had a thing about Julia Migenes at the time) and it had wording at the top and bottom of the screen saying "This film is not being shown in the intended ratio of 1.85:1" or words to that effect in French.

SE7EN was, indeed, screened on Viva last night, correctly framed and - if the language I heard in the section I watched was any indication - uncut.

And RATATOUILLE was also screened OAR on BBC 1. I coulda sworn this film was cropped to 16:9 the last time it was shown by the Beeb, but I'm probably wrong about that. Anyone know for certain?

Ratatouille was OAR last time, i've still got it recorded.

Not really related to tv, but I have also noticed recently that some of the films uploaded to lovefilm instant have not been in OAR. Scream trilogy, kill bill and the aviator are all cropped from 2.35:1 to 16:9. Up to now all films I've seen on it have been OAR. I think these films are all from the same studio so maybe they are being supplied this way.

I'd be demanding a refund.

Yes, these are all Miramax films. Perhaps it was an error on their part and if they are informed by e-mail of the mistake they will rectify it?

Doubt it, they've been shiping non OAR versions to broadcasters too (notably the Scream franchise to Really...)

Miramax. Say no more.

A company ruled by people with so little regard - and so much contempt - for their customers, and for film history, it makes me want to cough up blood at the thought of 'em. The very definition of what's wrong with modern 'cinema'.

Some suggestions that District 9 was cut last night on channel 4 is anyone able to confirm or deny this. (My analysis suggests it wasn't but I only compared running lengths, which is an unreliable method)

I don't think C4 would cut a film at 9pm, especially one with a 15 certificate. BBFC advice says it contains "one use of very strong language and strong bloody violence". Any idea what was supposed to have been cut?

By the way, COLLEGE ROAD TRIP (BBC 2) and WONDERFUL LIFE (C5) both screened OAR this afternoon.

I heard some of the violence was pulled, but since only 6 mins was missing I'll assume they just fiddled with the credits to reduce the length

'Twas, indeed. As if to make up for it, BBC 2 screened both KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA and GOAL! at the correct ratio(s) this afternoon. They can't seem to make up their minds on GOAL! - sometimes it's OAR, sometimes it isn't.

Might be wrong in saying this, but I thought Goal is always broadcast in OAR whereas the sequel isn't.

Indeed. It's a very entertaining remake, although I always feel sorry for Jennifer Tilly's husband each time I see it

You're right about the sequel not getting any OAR love on the Beeb, but I'm pretty sure the first one has been screened both OAR and cropped in the past. But since I've been wrong about such details in the past, don't hold me to that assertion, willya?...

Oh, and TELSTAR: THE JOE MEEK STORY screened OAR on BBC 2 last night, as expected. Good film, packed with familiar faces, very well done.

I remember seeing a few mins of that at Xmas (which was enough, for me) and yes, it was OAR, as was Monsters V Aliens.

Why do people with an internet connection even begin to pay to be insulted in that fashion? There are many free alternatives, and if I find something I really like then, yes, I do buy the Blu-ray. (albeit when they're discounted to around £7, which usually takes about 3 months from release)

In PAL it'll be around 107 mins. Remove around 5 mins for the end credits, which will be speeded up on C4, and it should fit comfortably into its 125-min slot.

And They Came To Cordura is in OAR at the mo.

The Korean film A BETTER TOMORROW has been released on Blu-ray in a 3-D version, but it appears to have been shot and released theatrically in 2-D, and subsequently reworked for 3-D on home video. Avoid like the plague.

Another one to avoid - possibly - is RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, which makes no mention (on the cover, at least) whether the Blu-ray includes both the US reworking and the original Hong Kong print. What did I say in an earlier posting about Miramax having such contempt for cinema and for the audience it 'serves'?

And I'm surprised to see SAFE HOUSE on home video, since I don't recall it ever playing theatrically in the UK. Is Denzel Washington's career in trouble, I wonder? Or is the film just really bad?...

Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (11 - 17 June):

• A BETTER TOMORROW [무적자] (2010)
• THE ENTITLED (2011)
• THE EXPENDABLES (2010)
• EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE (2011)
• J. EDGAR (2011) [Panavision]
• MAN ON A LEDGE (2012)
• NEON FLESH [Carne de Neσn] (2010)
• PAINTED SKIN [畫皮] (2008)
• RUMBLE IN THE BRONX [紅番區] (1995) [Technovision]
• SAFE HOUSE (2012)

Scope and 3-D films released on US Blu-ray (12 - 18 June):

• ACCIDENT [意外] (2009) [Technovision / Panavision]
• THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982) [Panavision]
• GAMERA THE BRAVE [小さき勇者たち ガメラ] (2006)
• GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE (2012) [3-D]
• GOOD DEEDS (2012)
• LABYRINTH (1986) [J-D-C Scope]
• A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN (2011)
• SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (2011)
• SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007)
• SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004)
• THIN ICE (2011)

According to IMDB it was released on the 24th February and has a rating of 6.9 indicating mixed reviews, but leaning slightly towards positive.

I don't think Denzel Washington can act his way out of a paper bag, but from the clips I saw I was hoping for a decent action flick. I was wrong: http://dvdfever.co.uk/?p=4664
