By the way, I watched C4's version of DISTRICT 9 for the first time last night and it did, indeed, seem to have been the subject of edits.
Potential minor spoiler: When the main character and his 'prawn' friend break into the underground complex to retrieve the canister of liquid, the initial counterattack by military personnel is preceded by what can only be described as an amateurish-looking 'edit' in which we see the beginning of a shot that was supposed to have been cut, leading into what appears to have been an act of violence which has been removed. At least, that's what it looked like. Huge spoiler: Also, the main villain's death at the end of the film may have been curtailed. The 'prawns' launch themselves at him, but it seems to cut abruptly to an aerial shot of him in pieces, with nothing in-between. If that WAS an edit, then it was much smoother than the first one. All the strong language (including a single use of the c-word) was intact, so I cannot understand why the version broadcast by C4 may have been censored in this way. They've never done this before, to my knowledge. And if they are responsible for any cuts, then they might screen an uncut print after 10pm - we'll have to wait and see on that score. All in all, a bit of a disappointment, and rather worrying. The film itself was OK, but I'm tired of being asked to empathise with lead characters as obnoxious as this one, (more spoilers) despite his climactic redemption. |

It's been a couple of years since I saw District 9, but at 9pm they shouldn't cut a 15-cert. I'd have to watch it again to see any potential edits, though.
On a different film, and with NO spoilers, I saw Prometheus in IMAX today (my first main feature in IMAX) and I understand the screen ratio is 1.44:1, but there was a small black bar at the top, giving an impression of 16:9, but how will that version compare to a 2.35:1 conventional ratio for this film? I got the impression during the film that I was watching a mixture of cropped and open-matte shots, eg. if a face filled the screen then it was cropped, but there were others that had the impression of being open-matte.. |

that's the thing about some movies, that they can be shown in "multi-matts" or open frame if you will .....
try and watch TRON LEGACY and AVATAR in a wider format, like i have (in VLC) and they are just as watchable |

I was watching Bruce Almighty on GOLD the other week and there was a black bar at the side of the film, not 4:3 style, but a thin strip on the left hand side. Any idea what that might have been? I'm sure it not there when BBC3 show it? (I believe it was produced in 1.85:1)

In most cases, they letterbox the entire 2.35:1 frame across the middle of the IMAX screen, with large black bars top and bottom. Since the image is so big anyway, those bars aren't that much of a problem. The IMAX version of THE POLAR EXPRESS was 2.00:1 and APOLLO 13 was 1.66:1, so a few films DO opt for an 'open-frame' version for Large Format exhibition, especially for something like PROMETHEUS which was shot 1.78 and framed for 2.39 (or both, in this case - which compromises both ratios, but that's another discussion).

As an experience - unbeatable. As a film, 8/10. Review here with a brief synopsis, but no spoilers.http://dvdfever.co.uk/?p=5388 Quote:

I saw PROMETHEUS in IMAX 3D in London on Sunday - the IMAX print has black bars at the top and the bottom - at that cinema they merge into the walls so you don't notice them unless you know they're there. The film was letterboxed into 2.35:1 throughout. 6 or 7 out of 10 for me - and I wasn't overwhelmed by the use of 3D.
Incidentally, PROMETHEUS is Ridley Scott's first digitally captured feature - shot on the Red Epic at 5K resolution. David Cronenberg has gone digital too, with COSMOPOLIS. (All his films are 1.85:1, though.) |

This isn't a spoiler, but if you see my review about the bit with Noomi looking through the hole, right at the audience, how did that look in 2.35:1? Did it look like I was watching a cropped image? Quote:
They sometimes 'shrink' the image to accommodate credits which stray too far into the left and right sides of the original image, though it's a mystery why they would do it for the duration of an entire film. This may actually happen more often than we think, but most TV's have overscan which hides it. The overscan on your set may be very small, which might explain it.
I don't have GOLD. Saw this morning I was missing Look Who's Talking Too. Couldn't believe that film tried to portray a momentous moment of their kid walking by using the music from... er.. the studio's own theme. I've always thought that shrieked of "Let's save money!" Quote:

Talk about greed and stupidity: It's bad enough that UK distribs opted to cut THE WOMAN IN BLACK for a 12A in the cinema, to open it up to younger audiences still in thrall to Daniel Radcliffe (ie. Harry Potter), but even though they've been given an uncut 15-cert version for home video, they've opted to put out a censored 12-cert version on DVD and BR, with an option - nothing more - for a 15 print somewhere down the line. Not only is this sheer bloody greed (forcing people to double-dip), it means that until that 15-rated version turns up on our shores, this British film will be playing uncut everywhere else in the world, but not in its home country! Avoid like the bleedin' plague... Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (18 - 24 June): BATMAN BEGINS (2005) [Panavision] CLASH OF THE TITANS (2010) [Panavision and 3-D] THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) [Panavision / IMAX] [2.39:1 and 1.44:1] ONE FOR THE MONEY (2011) REVOLUTION (1985) THE WOMAN IN BLACK (2011) Scope and 3-D films released on US Blu-ray (19 - 25 June): BIG MIRACLE (2011) BLADE (1998) [Clairmont Scope] BLADE: TRINITY (2004) CAT RUN (2011) CONSTANTINE (2005) EVITA (1996) [2.35 Research] THE FP (2011) GRAN TORINO (2008) [Panavision] INCEPTION (2010) [Panavision / Panavision Super 70] INSOMNIA (2002) [Panavision] JONAH HEX (2010) [Panavision] THE MATRIX (1999) THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003) MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITE [Le Tκte en Friche] (2010) NEWSIES (1992) [Panavision] SEEKING JUSTICE (2011) SUCKER PUNCH (2011) SUPERMAN (1978) [Panavision] SUPERMAN II (1980) [Panavision] TERMINATOR: SALVATION (2009) V FOR VENDETTA (2006) WANDERLUST (2012) WATCHMEN (2009) |

Nice to see DAMN THE DEFIANT! finally getting the full CinemaScope treatment on C4 yesterday - they've been screening a cropped version for ages now, so the new print was more than welcome. Still showing under the US release title, though, not the original British title HMS DEFIANT. Let's hope they've secured an OAR print for ENEMY AT THE GATES, due for broadcast (again) next week.
By the way, Ofcom recently received a SINGLE complaint about a scene in DEATH ON THE NILE (rated PG) in which a character shoots him/herself in the head. ITV pointed out that the film had been shown over 20 times prior to this particular broadcast, but it brooked no argument with Ofcom, which agreed with the complainant (ONE complaint, mind you, from ONE person, after ALL those broadcasts). With craven inevitability, ITV buckled under and said all future pre-watershed broadcasts of this film will now be cut. In practice, this probably means all versions - before and after 9pm - will probably be cut, if ITV's treatment of the post-watershed THE TOWERING INFERNO is anything to go by... |

ITV edited it of their own accord because of the complaint. Ofcom did not ask them to re-edit the scene.
Quote:
So don't believe everything you read. Ofcom did not make a comment on whether it agreed with the complaint or not, but regarded the incident as resolved due to ITV's re-edit of the scene.
An absolutely disgraceful decision by everyone concerned. |

I think this is only a 1.85:1 film, but thought it worth mentioning that next Saturday it's being shown on BBC4 rather than ITV4, so no adverts
I'm assuming it'll be DOG free.

Was last night's C4 screening of JFK a 2.35:1 premiere? I think it's only been on BBC before, where it's always been cropped to 16:9 (possibly 4:3 before that)

![]() And SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST was screened on BBC 2 in all its Megascope glory, too - possibly the same print which has run across the C4 platform over the last year or so. |
