Horrendously cropped 4:3 version of BHOWANI JUNCTION being shown across the C4 platform of late. The film may have played theatrically at 2.55:1 (can't be sure about that one, since it played with a mag stereo soundtrack at the 'transition' point between 2.55 and 2.35), but even at the 'narrower' gauge of 2.35, the cropping is still absolutely awful.

It filled the screen on my telly, it appeared to be cropped to 1.78:1/1.85:1 to me. (And yes, I have tested and other 1.66:1 films have slim black bars at the sides, so it's not an overscan issue.)

THE SHIPPING NEWS (BBC 2) screened OAR on Friday night, while DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS (C5) got its UK TV OAR 'premiere' today.

Nope definitely 1.66:1.

Then again I was just channel hopping and only seen what was on ITV 1. Maybe they cropped it for SD but let it stay 1.66:1 for HD?

C5 ran a lovely OAR print of DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS yesterday (first time the film has been screned on terrestrial TV at the original Techniscope dimensions), while BBC 2 offered the full CinemaScope version of THE MAN FROM LARAMIE - not sure if that was an OAR 'premiere', but it was more than welcome nevertheless.

And More 4 ran the CinemaScope version of GUNMAN'S WALK this morning - that was definitely an OAR 'premiere', since I recall previous screenings being hideoulsy cropped (possibly down to 4:3, but I can't be sure on that point).

Re: That last posting of mine: No, I don't know what a 'hideoulsy cropped' film would look like, either...

(Damn the lack of an edit function!!)

Anyways, down to business:

(Unless otherwise indicated, all films in the following list were projected at 2.35:1 prior to 1971, and at 2.39:1 thereafter)

There's a number of German Blu-ray releases listed at Amazon UK this week, many of them promising 3-D conversions of feature films that were originally shot and released in 2-D. Gawd knows what the 'quality' is like, but since these movies were never intended for 3-D exhibition in the first place, you pays yer money and you takes yer chances...

Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (30 July - 5 August):

• BARBARELLA (1968) [Panavision]
• THE RAVEN (2011)

Scope and 3-D films released on US Blu-ray (31 July - 6 August):

• 27 DRESSES (2008) [Panavision]
• 4.3.2.1 (2010)
• DATE NIGHT (2010)
• DETENTION (2011) [Hawk Scope (HD)]
• DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY (2004)
• HEAVEN STREWN (2011) [Panavision (16mm)]
• HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953) [CinemaScope] [2.55:1]
• LOL (2012)
• MR. & MRS. SMITH (2005)
• RIVER OF NO RETURN (1954) [CinemaScope] [2.55:1]
• SCALENE (2012)
• THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH (1955) [CinemaScope] [2.55:1]
• SHALLOW HAL (2001)
• THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS (1954) [CinemaScope] [2.55:1]
• WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS... (2008)

Which are those films? I saw one called 2:22 from Ascot Elite Home Entertainment, but no others that looked like it could be from them. Am I on the right track?

Yes, you are. The others are PETE SMALLS IS DEAD, WAR FLOWERS, ENEMIES AMONG US (as WIEDER EIN MORD IM WEISSEN HAUS), THE JOB and JACKBOOTS ON WHITEHALL (as NAZI INVASION).

Ta muchly. Not exactly high profile titles, so I wonder why they've done that.

That's exactly what I've been thinking of late. 3-D Blu-rays seem to have taken off big in Germany, and if you go to any German website selling such things and search for 3D titles, you'll find dozens of 2-D films - most of them forgettable low-budget B-movies or TV films and DTV titles - which have been converted. It doesn't happen so much in other countries (that I know of), but customers who don't know they're seeing a 2-D movie that was never meant for 3-D presentation are being ripped off in the worst possible way.

What is it with all these bloody Nazi movies, can nobody come up with an original idea anymore? Inglorious Basterds - Tedious, I just about managed 2.5 hrs without giving up
Iron Sky - Nazis on the moon? I think the writer may have ADHD...

I've added a 'grin' and 'confused' emoticon because your comment was both funny and baffling, all at the same time! WWII will always be a rich source for filmmakers and storytellers of all stripes, whether they take the subject seriously or not, for no other reason than it's one of the greatest events in human history, rich with incident and (therefore) dramatic potential.

In other words: Why not Nazi movies? There's always going to be crap ones (and I don't include the examples you offered, 'cos I rather liked 'em meself), but that's true of any subgenre.

I really enjoyed Inglorious, although it was too long overall, but Iron Sky was a good idea not really well implemented:

Inglorious was alright it just needed to up the pace a bit. They spent 5 mins on the opening titles, if they'd have cut that down to a minute or so and stopped leaving a minute between every sentence in the opening and dinner scenes, it would've been better, but having read a bit of the original script, Tarantino appears to have cut out all the funny bits, presumably to make it more of an action movie

Just be glad it's not Death Proof. God, that was terrible! (and Kill Bill Vol.2 was overlong and dull, as well - he should've cut both films together and tightened it up)

Both were shown properly, although Fracture was pretty duff. I can see why it took 5 years to come to TV and then it was shoved on when 99% of the TV viewers would be watching the dullympics.

In 2.35:1, although there's no HD version as it's on BBC3, and I presume BBC HD is in 3D as there's a split-screen effect on there.

No, they never do. Just as importantly, I wonder if the uncut version ever played on UK TV before the uncensored version premiered on Blu-ray a year or two ago? Was Dave's version uncut, I wonder?

Given how much visual imagery was lost, this was a travesty.

Looking forward to seeing FRACTURE, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the dull... er, I mean, the Olympics. Just thought I'd redress the balance after that bad-tempered outburst from the expensive seats down front...

That'll be the hour's worth of 3-D highlights from the dull... (here I go again!), er, I mean, the Olympics, which have been shoved away into the twilight zone, thereby guaranteeing poor viewing figures so the BBC can argue their 3-D experiment was a 'failure'...

Better news all-round: First time OAR screening for DALEKS' INVASION EARTH 2150 A.D. on C5 this afternoon. Peter Cushing, wobbly exploding models, and loads of 1960's 'futuristic' aesthetics. Who could possibly want anything more?...

Not entirely relevant but it's great to see some of the old Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies theatrical shorts OAR on Channel 5 over the weekend, they messed up the flagging/DOG a bit yesterday (it was still shown OAR though), but they appear to have sorted it out now. Let's hope it does well for them and they pick up the rights to Tom and Jerry as well...

You mean, there were Merrie Meldies cartoons in CinemaScope?! And they were shown that way on this partricular channel? When did that happen?! I would've set me PVR if I'd known they were being screened - I haven't seen any of these for ages!! Ditto the Tom 'n' Jerry cartoons...

If the Merrie Melodies cartoons were still being produced after 1953, some would no doubt have been shot and released at 2.35:1, and some (presumably) at 1.85:1.
