Am I wrong in thinking that ITV2 broadcasts of Air America were in 2.35:1? I thought ITV's would be, as a result, but it's in 16:9 and despite IMDB saying it was shot in Super 35, this is definitely a P&S copy

Air America has been on ITV 1 a few times and as always, it starts in 2.35:1 but after the opening credits are done, it zooms in to get rid of the bars and gives us a lovely cropped image.

What about Gamer on Channel 5 on Sunday night? I'm guessing it was cropped but would be surprised if by chance it wasn't.

No, the ITV 2 broadcasts were all cropped 16:9. There are many instances of films shot in Super 35 being prepared for 16:9 broadcasts in versions which crop the 2.39:1 theatrical area, rather than 'opening up' the original image. This must've been one of them.

GAMER was shot and released with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, though C5 may have reframed it to 1.78:1. Some people are averse even to this small difference, but I have to admit, I've never been too bothered by it.

Nice of C5 to screen a horrendously cropped 4:3 (and censored) version of THE TOWERING INFERNO the other day.

A quick flick appear to be 16:9, but I don't know for certain as it was only a quick flick...

I could have swore Gamer was a 2.35:1 movie. Ah well. I did notice the horrible 4:3 version of The Towering Inferno on Channel 5 on Sunday. Honestly, a 4:3 movie on a terrestrial channel looks incredibly unprofessional, especially in prime time and in this day and age, it shows a real lack of care from Channel 5 that they couldn't have obtained a OAR copy or at least included a request that all films were provided at least in widescreen when they last negotiated their film rights. And the position of their DOG on any of their channels when 4:3 content is being shown is far too intrusive, but they won't listen to comments when it is brought to their attention and claim they already have moved the DOG. Yes, they have. For 16:9 programmes. 4:3 programmes have a different setting you muppets. Change it!

Just watching the Kenny Everett "Best Possible Taste" drama and while, obviously, it's filmed in 16:9, it does have an odd look to the image. Everything looks a bit slightly vertically stretched, and at the edges the image is convex (or is it concave? The one that curves in on both sides).

Is there a name for this filming format?

I have this one recorded and will get back to you. Looking forward to it. Saw the 'Best Bits' compilation beforehand, and I'm still laughing at the impersonation of Dickie Attenborough ("Luvvies! Dah-lings!!"), not to mention Rod Stewart's expanding arse!!!...

The Channel 5 print of Towering Inferno is 4:3 so you might as well scratch that off your list

Yes, it's called anamorphic cinematography! I watched THE BEST POSSIBLE TASTE last night (a bit disappointing, and not enough of James Floyd as Freddie Mercury, which could have been an entire movie in its own right!) and was instantly aware the film had been shot with anamorphic lenses, though clearly framed for 1.78:1 (I don't think it was ever intended to be screened 2.39:1, merely shot with these lenses for a specific visual 'look'). Lights in out-of-focus backgrounds gave the game away pretty quickly, and a number of shots appear to have been taken from the edges of the scope frame, where slight 'curves' in the image can sometimes be spotted by the eagle-eyed.

Ta muchly. It was like watching a Panavision film, but in 16:9

The Towering Inferno, is occasionally screened on TCM in a widescreen format. The service is available on Virgin Media XL package and on BSkyB.

Shoot Em Up (which I haven't seen before, apart from the odd clip) is currently on C5 in 2.35:1.

That bodes well for the other Sunday premieres due soon, hopefully...

That said, I thought they would be regular, but next week is Rocky 6 (although I still haven't seen that one). Can't be any worse than Rocky 5, can it?

No it doesn't Rocky 6 is a Sony, so will likely be Pan and Scan, as all Sony films are...

But I'm sure I read somewhere that there a clauses in Lionsgate's contract that require films to be shown OAR (that was in reference to HBO, but they'll most likely make the same requests worldwide).

Thanks, re: the Lionsgate info.

Rocky 6 was 1.85:1 so can't lose anything. Then again, the logo... ugh.

The Quiet American (2002) currently in OAR. I don't know if it's been that way before. Not really my sort of thing.

The Phantom Menace looked terrible on ITV. Cropped to buggery, for some reason they cropped it more than needed to fit a 16x9 tv.

With overscan off there was a thin vertical black bar running down the right hand side of the screen. Bonkers. Even on the HD channel it looked soft and blurry.

With overscan off on my TV, there are thin black bars running down both sides of the screen on almost everything these days. I thought it was selective, confined to a few items during the course of the day, but no - most films and TV shows are affected. I hate it, because it ends up with 'scope' movies (2.39:1) being 'windowboxed' within the screen, rather than properly letterboxed.

It tets on my gits, and no mistake...

Those black bars on SD content are 1% each side. Is this honestly even noticeable?

Rocky Balboa is actually really good, it's probably the second best Rocky film behind the first film (it erases all memory of Rocky 5).

It doesn't sound like much, but it's definitely noticeable on a 42-inch screen (likely worse on anything bigger). It's OK during material which fills the entirety of the frame, but letterboxed 'scope' movies are rendered in a windowbox format by those side-bars, and it's more than a little aggravating. Also, by extending the scope frame to the very edges of the screen, you gain a little more height - not much, I'll admit, but there's a psychological advantage to any increase in height, no matter how small. Viewers may not think they notice it, but they do.

I'm sure 3.10 to Yuma was cropped when it was on Channel 5 but I could be wrong.

Sony films seem to vary depending on who is showing it, Channel 4 showed Panic Room in OAR a few days back whereas Channel 5 it can vary, I know Monster House was in OAR.

Out of interest, do animated films tend to be shown in OAR because I think it's a recent thing I've only seen a handful of animated films in 2.35.1 and they were Wall-E, Monsters Vs Aliens and Monster House.
