I'm sure the print was wobbling slightly at certain points as well (but that could be my crappy eye sight). I noticed it during the scrolling text intro

Yes, and it's not 1%. What a stupid post you made. Unless the black bars move (down to a crappy print which is all over the place), I read another thread on here which described the issue as the channels short-changing us on resolution. I don't know exactly how it works, but that's what results in the effect you see.

The thread was on here so long ago that I can't find it now.

Hopefully someone from that thread will also be on here and can link to it.

BBC have started pushing the boat out with their premieres, but for repeated films, they rarely bother. With a lot of new broadcasts also being in HD, they're getting OAR prints as well.

Whoever at ITV keeps getting premiere HD prints cropped to 16:9 for Universal, Sony and others, they really should be subject to having Laurence Olivier as their dentist..

Incredibles premiered cropped to 16:9. From its second BBC1 screening onwards, it was 2.35:1.

What ratio was A Bug's Life? I've only ever seen it in 1.85:1 either on BBC One or Channel 5. IIRC the Fox/Blue Sky films only started being animated in 2.35:1 from Rio onwards which was 2011, Dreamworks, Universal/Illumination and Sony, not too sure.

I would love to see Sleeping Beauty in its original ratio but I imagine that won't happen until Disney release it on Blu-Ray, can't imagine any of their animated films apart from Tangled and The Black Cauldron being in 2.35:1

Sleeping Beauty has already been released on BluRay, in it's original aspect ratio of 2.55:1.

The only Disney animated movies in 2.35:1 or wider are Sleeping Beauty, Lady & The Tramp, The Black Cauldron and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Tangled is 1.78:1. The animated/live action film Enchanted was at 2.35:1 as well. They did animate some Donald Duck cartoons at 2.35:1 and they are available on DVD/BluRay. The film Brother Bear starts off at 1.85:1 and when the central character is transformed into the bear, the ratio changes for the rest of the film to 2.35:1.

Enchanted I thought only the live action scenes were 2.35:1, interesting that only a handful of Disney films are 2.35:1 I guess it's so they were television friendly but with widescreen and HD more promient, I would hope that future Disney films from Wreck it Ralph onwards are 2.35:1

Disney has a set aspect ratio it encourages directors to use, or at least it used to..,

GONE (ITV 1) and SYDNEY WHITE (BBC 2) both premiered in cropped format yesterday, but mouldy oldie NEVADA SMITH (ITV 4) was screened OAR.

Did anyone notice if GOSFORD PARK was OAR on BBC 2?

Actually, I'm mistaken, the first 10 minutes are 1.85:1, but once they leave the animated world and come into the real world it switches to 2.35:1. From memory, the entire film was 2.35:1 last time I seen it... Same thing as Brother Bear then, the start is 1.85:1 then once the main crux of the film kicks in, it switches to a wider ratio.

Actually, I seem to remember there were two versions, with the characters and objects placed differently to suit the different ratios. Not entirely sure though-can anyone confirm?

Not to say that C5 were necessarily showing the as-designed 4:3 version of course!

I find this a very bizarre release. Finally they release a 3D version.... but it's not the extended edition(!)

Why quadrupole dip when you can (whatever the term for multiplication by 5 or 6 is) dip?

Yes thats correct- the original DVD release (which I've got) has the 4:3 version on one side and the 2.35:1 version on the other. The blerb on the case says:

Quote:
“....two viewing formats: original widescreen and special full frame, digitally recomposed to retain the entire image.”

Which is nonsense of course, but does confirm it wasn't just cropped. (Although I'm not sure I've ever watched that version!)

SInce TCM went HD, they seem to be showing their films in 16:9 and are cropping films to suit. Their version of The Revengers went from 21:9 to 16:9 immediately after the director credit.
