Yes, I was a bit confused at first, until I realised Braindead meant to say it was STILL 2.35:1 after 5 minutes of screen time had elapsed, indicating that it was going to be OAR throughout.

Mouldy oldie THE DEADLY COMPANIONS screening OAR on BBC 2 as I write. Is this one even on DVD, I wonder?

Kill Bill isn't OAR, I shall assume cropped or P&Sd (don't know for certain)

Shot in 2.35:1, so looks like a combination of open-matte and cropped shots, from what I've seen before.

The Book of Eli in OAR on C5 at the mo. Who's the distributor? The trailer was 16:9 so I didn't hold out any hope. May be worth a watch?

Can someone tell me why U571 was broadcast on Channel 5 in 4:3 with the sides cut off.

Absolutely awful!

Surely few people are watching 4:3 TVs these days.

On BBC HD (when they have simulcast it in the past), it is in OAR. I don't believe it was simulcast this time but why couldn't it be OAR in SD anyway?

Because it's Channel 5. They are cheap and couldn't have bothered to pay for a new copy of the movie. The 4:3 copy they have was either given to them as a bonus when they bought the rights to other bigger films from the distributor or it's the same rights they have held since they got the rights over a decade ago probably. Either way, it's incredibly amateurish and one of the reasons why I never watch Channel 5 any more.

CBS Action is showing NCIS from the start in 16:9. Channel 5 are showing season 5 and it's still in 4:3, I think they only bothered obtaining 16:9 prints from season 6 or 7 onwards.

Kill Bill 1 was 16:9 on Sat on BBC HD. I still had it on there, after watching Thick Of It.

Really? From memory, last time it was on BBC HD it was in 2.35:1. How strange it was cropped on the HD channel.

Channel 5 started showing NCIS in widescreen from season 4, it's always bothered me they've never gotten new prints for seasons 1-3.

Summit Entertainment distributed Eli worldwide.

Summit don't do international distribution, eOne has a UK first look deal.

But Book of Eli was distributed by everyone's favorite one hit wonder, Entertainment in Video...

It was simulcast, but I was watching in SD so am unable to confirm if BBC HD showed it OAR or not.

ITV has been screening an OAR version of ENTER THE DRAGON for some time now. If you've only ever seen the cropped version (whether 4:3 or 1.78), the full image must come as something of a pleasant surprise...

On another topic: Remember my dreary whinge about those black bars down each side of the TV screen when viewed via HDMI with zero overscan? The bloody things are now absolutely endemic, but are only ever truly noticeable during scope movies, which are windowboxed (rather than letterboxed) as a result.

Can anyone confirm whether or not those black bars are visible on HD channels? I'm viewing in standard-def, and I'm just wondering if these 'additions' are unique to SD broadcasts.

Yep, it's just an SD thing due to reduced resolution. I mentioned that a while back, but I don't know the exact resolution figures (I saw those in a thread elsewhere on here but can't find it now). A Freeview HD box is anywhere between £30-40 in Tesco usually, so it's worth a purchase for the few HD channels alone.

Thanks for that. I know I'd asked about this before, but I couldn't recall if anyone had answered definitively, one way or the other. With the right medication, I should remember this time around. Fingers crossed...

Yep, it's now officially a bloody nuisance. And since I already have Freeview built into my TV, along with a separate Freeview box, and not enough money to consider purchasing another Freeview thingamajig (even at £30-£40), it looks like I'm stuck with those black bars in perpetuity...

Nurse, the screens!

Did anyone happen to catch whether Fun With Dick and Jane was in the correct aspect ratio this past weekend on Channel 5 HD

I am of the few! But I have the PVR set up so that I get Letterbox for 16:9 transmissions and Full Screen for 4:3 so it's not down to us late adopters, honest.

Please try contacting Channel 5 or any broadcaster really, to ask them why they don't show the correct AR instead of the disappointments being recorded here.

I watched Looper for the second time, with MP3 player in pocket and earphones on. Playing on the player was Rian Johnsons download audio commentary.

The commentary early on dealt with the films Aspect Ratio and explained the difference between Super 35 widescreen and anamorphic widescreen.

For those how who want to listen to the thing it can be found here http://soundcloud.com/rcjohnso/loope...cal-commentary
