I watched Looper for the second time, with MP3 player in pocket and earphones on. Playing on the player was Rian Johnsons download audio commentary.

The commentary early on dealt with the films Aspect Ratio and explained the difference between Super 35 widescreen and anamorphic widescreen.

For those how who want to listen to the thing it can be found here http://soundcloud.com/rcjohnso/loope...cal-commentary
Thanks. That sounds like fascinating stuff. I'd do it for home viewing, though, rather than going back into the cinema, unless you did the former

Does anyone know if Skyfall IMAX will have a ratio other than 2.35:1, please? And where I can find out such information? IMDB doesn't list any other ratio, but they're not always right.

Kill Bill Vol.2 in OAR now. Shame Vol.1 wasn't last week.

It's like the two Tomb Raider films. Last time I saw them on BBC1, the first was in OAR, but the second was 16:9.

Apparently it's 1.9:1 on IMAX, so there won't be the dramatic AR change that TDKR had in a 15/70 theatre. The whole thing is a 1.9 instead.

I saw the trailer in a digital IMAX though and it still looked very impressive!

Excellent link, ta. Interesting comment from one person about calling it a "cheaply-filmed movie" as it wasn't shot in IMAX.

Sounds, re: the framing, that I'll miss nothing by seeing it in 2.35:1, and seeing as local Odeon, at the Trafford Centre, expands from 1.85 to 2.35, then that'll be better that way. This is unlike the Manchester Odeon where the conventional screens are large 1.85:1 and, watching a 2.35:1 film, just looks like it has dodgy black bars like a pop video.

Yes, I don't think there's much difference composition wise--more headroom and legroom in the more open version of course. But there is a difference size and sharpness wise! The trailer looked great in a digital IMAX, and if you are in striking distance of the Odeon Printworks it will be vaster and better! I'd seriously consider it...

A 1.85 screen is a terrible swizz in a normal cinema though.

Note that there's no mention of DEMON HUNTER: THE RESURRECTION being released in the UK in its original 3-D format, thereby denying us an opportunity to see the film as originally intended.

Also, a set of 25 'old school' martial arts films are being released in a US box-set this week, though few details (other than a list of titles) have been forthcoming. Fans are pretty sure that these will be nothing more than cropped-n-dubbed upconverts of existing DVD masters, which amounts to a criminal waste of everyone's bleedin' time and money. Two titles in the list have eluded me:

I've listed IRON FISTS as the 1979 production directed by Karl Maka, as that's the more likely film being released in this box-set, though it could also be THE FISTS OF VENGEANCE (also known as IRON FISTS), a 1973 production directed by Chan Hung-man. The latter seems remote, since the vast majority of other films on the list date from the mid-70's to the early-80's.

Something called Enter the Iron Fist is also listed as one of the films in this 'Wu Tang' box-set, but I could find no evidence that such a movie exists, no matter how much I googled it. It could be a new title for an existing film, such as IRON FIST ADVENTURES (The Adventure, 1972), IRON FIST BOXER (Peculiar Boxing Tricks and the Master, 1978), IRON FISTED EAGLE'S CLAW (1979), THE IRON FISTED MONK (1977) or IRON FISTED WARRIOR (Cantonen Iron Kung Fu, 1979), but you'd think the distribs would use a title already known to the target audience, whether employed theatrically or on home video.

Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (5 - 11 November):

• Conan the Destroyer (1984) [J-D-C Scope]
• Death Watch [La Mort en Direct] (1979) [Panavision]
• Demon Hunter: The Resurrection [Painted Skin: The Resurrection] [畫皮II] (2012) [3-D]
• Fear (1996) [Panavision]
• Ghost Busters (1984) [Panavision]

Don't worry, keep it up

I'll be watching The Bridge at Remagen tomorrow, hopefully (as this is C5) it will be widescreen and not pixilated The Night of the Generals is an interesting choice, been a while since that was on AFAIK.

• Bitter Victory [Amιre Victoire] (BBC 2) [CinemaScope]
That should be a grave accent, not an acute.

Many thanks for the responses. I just wanted to be sure this stuff is still useful. Tell your friends!

That should be a grave accent, not an acute.
Ooh, ta for that. If the devil's in the details, then it pays to get 'em right, as I always say.

Indeed. 4:3. How piss poor

And now, Perfect Sense is open-matte 16:9 from the theatrical 2.35:1 ratio. And a BBC Film premiere too! Shameful.

Might have known C5 would do the dirty on THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN, but PERFECT SENSE was a BBC production - and the opening BBC Films logo was OAR (it switched to cropped/open matte directly afterward)! Then it was followed on BBC 2 by the terrestrial OAR premiere of THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS...

I missed the latter, but I did notice how the BBC Films logo was OAR for Perfect Sense. I could complain to the BBC, but I know the stack response I'll get and it takes about 3 years to submit each complaint thanks to the way they've redesigned it.
