Tucked away on late night BBC2, but The Relic is, I think, an OAR premiere too. I've only ever seen it cropped before. Alas not in HD, but good to see it in its original ratio as it really suffers when cropped. Decent fun thriller, too.

Grounded changed to 16:9 after the opening credits ended. Looked P&S, but I didn't stick around for long.

Watching it now on Iplayer. It's showing in 16:9, which presumably means more image height - there's a fair amount of headroom in many shots.

It's a different version to the one I saw in the cinema: not just 16:9 and cut down to an hour from two, but with captions added at the beginning of each song.

I saw a bit of this on BBC 2 before the start of THE RELIC and it was, indeed, cropped/reframed to 16:9. Stick with the DVD (or Blu-ray, if there's one available).

Lionsgate are the distributor of The Expendables so they're a good chance it'll be 2.35:1.

The BBC did exactly the same thing when they broadcast Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner, a three and a half documentary that was edited down to the region of two hours.

C5 cropped Superman III to 16:9 this afternoon but yet they switched to 2:35.1 for the slapstick credits sequence.

With LED ZEPPELIN: CELEBRATION DAY, as well as adding song-title captions they also redid the end credits to reflect a shorter song list, so this count count as a legitimate alternate version.

They cut out "Stairway to Heaven" believe it or not, and also my pick of the best song performance of the night, "In My Time of Dying", with Page on slide guitar and Jones on fretless bass.

didn't ITV do this when they first showed it?

Opening and closing credits are usually shown in the OAR to stop names being chopped off and confusing viewers, anything in between is then cropped if the broadcaster hasn't secured OAR prints of the film.

The BBC will have brought the TV version provided by the distributor, this is will usually be pre-edited (and as such the BBC has very little say)

I saw Superman II's opening credits were cropped to 16:9, but then all the credits were flying around, so nothing would've got missed, as such.

JUMBO (previously listed here - incorrectly - as Billy Rose's Jumbo) was cropped to buggery on Film 4 this afternoon. It remained 2.35:1 throughout the opening credits and the introductory musical number thereafter, but once it switched to the main narrative, it was cropsville all the way.

Just saw a 2.35:1 trailer for a kids film/programme called Mr Stink, with Hugh Bonneville in the lead role, on Sun 23rd Dec at 6.30pm, which is also on BBC HD in 3D. Now I have a 3DTV I'll give it a whirl and see if it's any good.

The trailer featured special effects coming out of the 2.35:1 frame, so I don't know if that's been jazzed up for the trailer and it's really 16:9 (I remember the trailers for Zen were simulated at 2.35:1 when it was a 16:9 programme)

It wouldn't surprise me if MR. STINK was indeed broadcast at 2.35:1 within the 16:9 frame - the very same thing happened with animated film G-FORCE in 2009. The film was shot in 2.39:1, but theatrical release prints were 1.85:1, with the scope frame letterboxed across the centre of the screen. This allowed for an extreme effect when objects appeared to come out of the screen, since they not only leaped out at the audience, they also seemed to breach the upper and lower matte. This was presumably carried over to the Blu-ray 3-D version.

That seems really bizarre. Why create such a weird version?

I looked up G-Force versions for DVD, Blu-ray and 3D on a torrent site and found the first two are 2.35:1 and the 3D is 16:9.

True. I believe this is the first time CG has been shown OAR - same with PRICELESS on Saturday night.

Strange thing happened when I watched the recent premiere of PREDATORS on C4 (it was stored on my DVR). The closing credits were duly sped-up to the usual stupid degree, but once they were over, the screen went blank for a moment, and then the credits came back on, but at the correct speed! It was as though someone had simply recorded ultra-quick credits over the top of the original and forgot to lop off the 'excess' at the end!! Wonderful bit of gaffery...

I didn't watch CG, but it's on the iPlayer OAR (I was watching Zack and Miri in 16:9 (shot 1.85:1 as far as I know) on C5)

Nicely spotted!

BTW, Lord of War - who'd have thought C5 would get the 2.35:1 'premiere' for this, as BBC1 always showed it in 16:9.

How on earth did I manage to miss that one off last week's lstings, I wonder?! Sack-cloth and ashes for Mr. Libretio, please...

Also nice to see MERRY CHRISTMAS get its 2.39:1 'premiere' on Film 4, after a number of 16:9 screenings by the Beeb. Still shown before the watershed, though, which means something may have been snipped from this 12-cert film, but gawd knows what.

Oh, and Anchor Bay's UK DVD version of Dennis Quaid-starrer BENEATH THE DARKNESS is cropped/reframed to 16:9. Avoid!!
