(Unless otherwise indicated, all films in the following list were projected at 2.35:1 prior to 1971, and at 2.39:1 thereafter)

* = May not be screened in all areas (check your local listings).

I've included MR. STINK because this is clearly a 3-D film, but the AR is currently unknowable until the film itself is broadcast by the Beeb. It could be scope, as the trailers suggest, or 'full-screen' 16:9. Time will tell.

SLADE IN FLAME ("SLADE IN" and "FLAME" on separate credit screens, for the record) cropped to 16:9 on BBC Four, apart from the credits sequence.

SLEEPERS currently on ITV3 in 16:9, though that may well be opened up rather than cropped as it's a Super 35 feature.

ETA: Caught a bit of PRIMAL on Film Four - in 16:9.

It's always seemed odd to me that this should be listed in most sources as Slade in Flame, since 'Slade in' is obviously a credit for the band. Much like 'Peter Cushing in', followed by THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, if that makes it clearer. Nope, it's definitely just FLAME - and I am unanimous in that.*

And I missed out RARE EXPORTS from the most recent scope/3-D listings. I'm entitled to one or two mistakes every few months - I'm only human, after all - but there's been too many of 'em recently. If people are going to retain confidence in these postings, I really must pull my finger out. For the record, the film was properly 'scoped' on Film 4, though it was actually 'windowboxed', with bars around all four sides.

More sloppiness: I forgot to check whether CASUALTIES OF WAR (Yesterday) and THE GAME PLAN (BBC 2) were scoped on their respective channels. Anyone check 'em out?

Isn't it always? Anyway, ITV 4 has got a bleedin' nerve wheeling this bloody thing out again. I'm sick of typing it every week (often two or three times!). I'll be interested when/if they ever show it at the original AR.

MR STINK was indeed broadcast in Scope.

On the other hand, I caught the beginning of THE FAMILY MAN (wasn't going to watch it all as I'd seen it before) and it was cropped to 16:9.

Can't help you with the other two as I didn't watch them and THE GAME PLAN isn't available on Iplayer.

Also nice to see MERRY CHRISTMAS get its 2.39:1 'premiere' on Film 4, after a number of 16:9 screenings by the Beeb. Still shown before the watershed, though, which means something may have been snipped from this 12-cert film, but gawd knows what.”

I'll let you off re: LCH, but for the other film, according to their very sparse redesigned pages, it's "one use of strong language" which means an f-word, like most 12-cert films.

I think a lot of these tend to shoot alternate scenes knowing they'll get a lot of afternoon screenings, so substitute it for something else. It'd make sense for TV.

Possibly because new vids are released on Tuesdays in the States, there doesn't seem to be any BR's being released over there tomorrow, certainly none which qualify for inclusion in these lists, so it's just the UK stuff this week.

Scope and 3-D films released on UK Blu-ray (24 - 30 December):

• Abduction (2011)
• The Baytown Outlaws (2012)
• Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - The Egg of the King [ベルセルク 黄金時代篇Ⅰ 覇王の卵] (2012)

Lady and the Tramp - at 2.55:1, definitely the first time BBC1 has ever shown such a wide ratio at primetime. Probably on BBC1 at all.

I hope other Disney films like Sleeping Beauty are in their correct ratio but it's limited to just a handful.

Also, it's the first time this film has ever been shown on telly; it's only taken 57 years!

Agreed. Thinking back - I had about 1/3 of the film on Super 8 back in the day - and clips on Disney Time.. then got the DVDs earlier in the year. And BBC1 have now got it on iPlayer...

Or given that this is a foreign-language film, they translate the relevant bit differently, without including the strong language.

That happened with WINGS OF DESIRE, a 15 in the cinema (before the 12 was introduced) due to one f-word which was not included in the subtitles of the PG-certificate video and DVD.

And also the first and only time IIRC where a Disney animated film contained a fully visible nude arse, although it's a baby's, but it's still a human arse that was drawn and put in the film!

What ratio was the DVD? I'm guessing 4:3.

I'm reminded of the same happening with Le Cop 2, which was a 12 at the cinema but by the time it came to video (or possibly a TV broadcast, I forget which), an exclamation of "F**kers!" (to ge the 12 cert) became "Bastards!", which would only merit a PG.

I believe the DVD of Lady & The Tramp is 2.55:1. It was too wide for Disney to make a 4:3 crop of that wouldn't kick up a fuss.

Ta. It's just that even some old Tom and Jerry cartoons were made in either that or 2.35:1, and look horrendous in 4:3.

Lord only knows how bad the 4:3 VHS of it looked back in the day.

I know some old Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes cartoons were 2.35:1 but they never seem to get seen in that ratio, just 4:3.

Gone with the Wind is a surprisenly good quality print on Channel 5, was it shot in 4:3.

It was shot 1.37:1, and C5 are showing this in pillarboxed format within the 16:9 frame - bars down either side. I'm assuming it's the same source used for the recent Blu-ray and DVD. And you're right - this is one beautiful-looking film. For a 73 year old pensioner, it looks like it was shot last year!!

While I'm here, just a note to acknowledge the scope print of CLEOPATRA on BBC 4 the other night. It was around 2.35:1 rather than 2.21:1, indicating it was probably taken from a 35mm print, which would be odd since the Todd-AO process was rarely credited on 35mm prints, and it was certainly credited on the BBC's version. Also, A CHRISTMAS CAROL on BBC 1, properly scoped but, alas, not in 3-D - and this one is a REAL treat when seen in 3-D, I promise you!

I'm hoping someone can confirm whether or not THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR was scoped on C5...

I was surprised to see ACC in scope as not many animated films are done like that especially in 3D.

GWTW I've alway seen in a bad print so hopefully we'll see a high quality print of The Wizard of Oz when its shown on Channel 4. The only other classic film that's still shown in a bad print is The Sound of Music.

The BBC are mostly okay at that these days, when it comes to a premiere, it's just older films that tend to suffer. (unless you were referring to an animated film itself being in scope format)

At some point I want to see Life of Pi, but I mainly have a choice of the Odeon in Trafford Centre or Manchester Printworks. The screen ratios in both cinemas are 2.35:1 and 1.85:1, respectively, so for a film that's mostly the latter, it'll be better to see Life of Pi at the Printworks, since if I see it at the Trafford Centre, there'll be wasted space on the sides, and then it'll look silly for the enclosed 2.35:1 clips where, as has been shown on TV, there are flying fish which zoom over the black bars, rather like some of the special effects in Mr Stink on Sunday.

However, when this scene just jumped from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1 *just* to apply this effect, it did seem rather pointless.
