At some point I want to see Life of Pi, but I mainly have a choice of the Odeon in Trafford Centre or Manchester Printworks. The screen ratios in both cinemas are 2.35:1 and 1.85:1, respectively, so for a film that's mostly the latter, it'll be better to see Life of Pi at the Printworks, since if I see it at the Trafford Centre, there'll be wasted space on the sides, and then it'll look silly for the enclosed 2.35:1 clips where, as has been shown on TV, there are flying fish which zoom over the black bars, rather like some of the special effects in Mr Stink on Sunday.

However, when this scene just jumped from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1 *just* to apply this effect, it did seem rather pointless.”

I wonder if Pi will keep that scene in 2.35:1 when it released on home entertainment or will be cropped, I know films like Enchanted and Brother Bear change aspect ratios.

I am referring to animated films done in scope, I notice Shrek Forever After was scope but not Tangled so it must be a choice for the film makers. I know Blue Sky only started to animate in 2.35:1 from Rio onwards and Dreamworks did with Monsters Vs Aliens onwards, not sure about animated films like Universal or Sony.

Speaking of Disney, does anyone what frame rate Mary Poppins was shot in? that film will look stunning in HD when the Blu-Ray comes out in 2014.

Probably missing the point here as I don't really understand the post immediately above, but I've seen Life of Pi and it was 1.85:1 aspect; none of it was in 2.35:1.

Fantastic film by the way; well worth seeing.

As you can see from this clip it switches between 1.85 and 2.35, maybe some places are showing it cropped? or maybe you were so engrossed you didn't notice?

I'm glad Channel 5 broadcast the 4:3 film in a 16:9 frame. That meant the film wasn't spoiled with their DOG being too far in on the image and was tucked away at the top where it wasn't that noticable. If only they would do that with all their 4:3 content from now on as their DOG for 4:3 programming is awful on ALL their channels, and I'm surprised there haven't been complaints, or attempts to move it when they moved the DOG's when in the 16:9 position earlier in the year.

Thanks; how odd! I was certainly "engrossed" but I don't remember the ratio changing.

How to Train Your Dragon is OAR, and DreamWorks films have started appearing on iPlayer - perhaps the BBC have renewed their DW deal?

Yep, that's the clip. Seems odd to change the ratio just for the effect when it was a bit unnecessary, as the flying fish are good enough.

That's fair enough. It took me a while during some action scenes of this year's IMAX 3D Spiderman to notice that the ratio had opened up. Shame they didn't do that for the Blu-ray, like was done for The Dark Knight Rises (although that wasn't in 3D)

It's projected in 1.85:1, with IIRC the flying-fish scene the only one that's letterboxed to 2.35:1. There's also one shot (overhead of Pi asleep in the lifeboat) which is pillarboxed into 1.33:1.

With hindsight I think I might have noticed some of this. I seem to recall at one stage thinking that the screen didn't look wide enough!

What ratio was this shown in this morning? It was on the TV screen in my local leisure centre and it looked about 2.1:1, which is somewhat unusual.

Looked 2.35:1 for me but then again, I'm not technical enough to see the difference between 2.35:1 and 2.40:1. If there's black bars at the top and bottom I just call it 2.35:1 regardless!

Unless the leisure centre TV was incorrectly set up and had the subtitle zoom or something on which made it look an odd ratio? Our local leisure centre's TV was always like that. Everything was zoomed in 16:9 on analogue so things looked too big for the screen but strangely no-one seemed to notice or care but me!

Yes, you're probably right. Columbo was on one of the other screens in "stretchy" vision!

I'm like that with the gym TVs. When they had digiboxes connected to separate 4:3 CRT TVs (all hanging from the ceiling), they often had them on 4:3, stretched sideways to fill the screen

I complained via the website, as it was easier than trying to explain to a member of staff who clearly couldn't see what was right in front of them! And they semi- sorted them out, but not completely, by which time I found out where they kept the remotes and adjust them accordingly next time I was in.

Now, they had flat-screen TVs with Freeview built-in so this is no longer an issue.

BTW, all 4:3 programmes do end up stretched, due to however their TVs are set up, but there's hardly any 4:3 material being shown when I'm in there, which is mostly between 5-7.

Perhaps not strictly a film, but "Coldplay - MX World Tour 2012" (which was essentially a cut version of "Coldplay Live") was shown in OAR (I believe it's in 2.39, but don't quote me)

It's available in HD on the iPlayer, but you'll probably want to skip over the cringe worthy narration from Chris Martin...

SPACE CHIMPS (C4) and EIGHT BELOW: INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY (BBC 1) both screened OAR. Chimps was a premiere, but I believe Eight Below has only ever been cropped in previous transmissions.

Trailers for MOON on BBC 2 have been shown OAR, so I'd be very surprised if that one was cropped/reframed tonight.

I know it was cropped the other day, but I caught the last few mins of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and it was cropped to 16:9, but it's one of those Cinemascope productions where everyone's face looks a bit stretched in the process anyway, so it looked like a doubly-dreadful print here. AND it was out of sync!

Not at all, old bean - great minds, and all that...

And now, I should warn those of a delicate disposition to brace themselves for a severe shock to the system. Hankies at the ready:

I know there are hundreds of millions of people out there, waiting desperately for my weekly list of scope and 3-D Blu-rays, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to give it a rest for a while, perhaps even permanently (no sobbing at the back there!). I've just been too busy to allocate time to doing it, and if I plough through it in a frenzy, just to make room for everything ELSE on my plate, then mistakes will happen and the lists will be no good to anyone. I may go back to it in due course, but no promises. Apologies to all those tempted to fling themselves onto mouse-traps in a fit of utter despair as a result of this heartbreaking announcement, but something in my schedule has simply gotta give, and it's this.

The TV listings will continue, no worries about that.
