Yay!

I was tempted to write a monthly piece on my website, summarising films in OAR over the previous month, like a regular follow-up to something I wrote over a year ago (below). However, these days it's happening more often than not (thankfully) so if there'd be too many surprises to note.

Also, Bedtime Stories was in OAR (I only know this because I don't bother cancelling manual season passes on my TiVo and Doctors is normally on at the same time)

The Wizard of Oz was shown in HD on Channel 4, it's great to see films like Oz and Gone with the Wind restored to their former glory.

isn't PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END the only one of the series so far NOT to have been screened OAR by the Beeb? For this reason, I opted not to bother with it last night - only to switch on halfway through and find it was being screened OAR!!

Same went for CEMETERY JUNCTION on BBC 2.

I was also hoping the Beeb would have obtained an updated print of THE EMERALD JUNGLE for transmission last Friday night, but it was the same old cropped 16:9 version we all know and loathe...

I saw bit of the first two. I knew one Pirates film hadn't been shown OAR before but forgot which one as I haven't seen any of them in full.

CM's a good film, even with the presence of Ricky Gervais in front of and behind the camera.

Hard Eight was OAR also, at 1am on C4. Haven't seen that before but it was good, although I was very tired & dropped off briefly at a couple of points, but I made it to the end, then recorded the last hour on +1 and flicked through it for a couple of dialoge exchanges I missed.

Just in case anyone else forgot (like me:sleep the customs limit for ordering anything outside the EU is now £15 or less NOT £18. You need to check the current exchange rate on the UK customs site, and then multiply that by 15 to get the max order you can do in the foreign currency without getting whacked with VAT & a £8 post office charge. I'm not sure if that also applies to goods ordered from Jersey, Guernsey etc, anyone know?

Hmmm so it seems all items imported from Guernsey & Jersey now have full VAT paid on them since April 1, 2012, see also customs announcement here. Low Value Consignment Relief (i.e. no VAT or import tax) still applies to goods of £15 or under imported from all other non EU countries.

THE REBOUND premiered OAR on BBC 1 last night, though C4 continues to show a horribly cropped version of DRAGOON WELLS MASSACRE.

If you order from Amazon US and chose expedited shipping you can calculate pay customs in advance. They'll probably charge you customs on your postage, but it's way cheaper than having to pay royal mail....

Thanks for that tip, though doing a few calculations I think it's possibly still a bit cheaper to order separately below £15 with standard shipping & avoid VAT altogether. One thing I have worked out is if the item you are looking at is slightly over £15 from one of the importers on amazon.co.uk, if you go to ebay you'll probably find it just under the £15 or equivalent amount (from the customs exchange rate page), as amazon.co.uk listers are only able to charge the £1.26 UK postage rate so some of the postage cost is absorbed into the item cost, whereas international ebay sellers can charge the real postage cost.
jzee
09-01-2013
Just to add, obviously if you can't find the item under £15 the amazon.com expediated shipping definitely looks the way to go as the extra $4.20 for 1 item (inc VAT, +60c extra for each extra item) over standard shipping is still much less than the £8 Post Office charge, and if you have £100+ of items under £15 each you wanted to get from amazon.com it would be worth doing expediated in that case also (the calculation I did where standard was cheaper was with 4 items just under £15 ordered separately but amazon combines orders though so you'd need to wait for each to ship in that case).

Can't be sure, but I think THE GREAT SIOUX MASSACRE got its OAR terrestrial premiere on Film 4 yesterday. I recall wanting to see it before, only to switch off after the opening credits (when it switched to 16:9), so yesterday's transmission was more than welcome.

Switched off MOON after 25 minutes, regardless of ratio. I like Sam Rockwell, but I might have known this would be dull to the point of screaming stupidity, given how much the 'critics' raved about it...

Yep, they've shown the two Dr Who movies (with Peter Cushing) in full scope over the last few months. Great fun!

By the way, anyone else notice the new channel Movie Mix on Freeview 32? I just discovered it today, and along with old episodes of Baywatch, et al, it's showing a range of not-terribly-inspiring films, including a number of DTV efforts and some seen-'em-a-thousand-times-before stuff like THE TAILOR OF PANAMA. 'Twill be interesting to see what ratio they go for, and whether they cut movies, tamper with closing credits, etc. One to keep an eye on, I think.

It's the same channel as More>Movies (previously Men&Movies) on satellite, Sony are presumably trialling content on Freeview to see whether it's worth their while buying a slot outright.

Thanks for that, jzee. I don't know what the point of such channels may be, since the films they're known for screening to date are the kind of thing you'd find in the bottom of the bargain bin at an HMV closing-down sale...

Same with C4 and their hideous 16:9-cropped print of Annie. Not even in 5.1, but then it's not an HD print anyway.
