Hah, it's not all that bad, just watching Tailor of Panama now with Geoffrey Rush which is pretty good 6.1/10 on imdb, I'm also getting into the US series 'The Guardian' they now have on, about a high flying lawyer working as a child advocate. Also have Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) coming up on Wednesday with Woody Allen & Diane Keaton, and The End of the Affair (1999) on Friday, admittedly quite a lot of bargain bucket stuff in between though.

Libretio is clearly not aware that such films are a significant upgrade on the typical Men&Movies fare before the rebrand (and which continue to be shown on its sister channel Movies4Men)

Gawd, if this lot constitutes an 'upgrade', then it's even more of a pointless waste of time than I thought!! Woody Allen and THE TAILOR OF PANAMA? They may not be 'bargain bin' stuff, but they're VERY familiar from other channels, to the point of absolute redundancy. Besides which, I checked out Tailor and BLIND DATE, and they were both cropped to buggery. So much for hoping this channel would be respectful of the very films they're championing...

Do you prefer VHS also?

Back to reality, though, and The Last Samurai is on C5 in OAR. Is this an OAR premiere?

Not sure whether it's an OAR premiere, but it's a welcome presentation nonetheless.

I decided to go ahead with my monthly summary, starting a look back at the previous month's widescreen films, tipping my hat to Libretio and this thread, of course

Nice blog!

I'd like to give Libretio a pat on the back too for his posts. I never thought two and a half years ago when I started this thread it'll still be going now. I didn't realise how many of us want to see films on TV in their original aspect ratio. Its great to see how many people keep a look out for networks that do and let us all know when it happens which has kept this thread going.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed and continue to do so

Rumble in the Bronx is currently OAR on BBC1. Has this been shown that way before? Terrestrial channels aren't too polite to Jackie Chan films.

I do believe it has, though this is the re-dubbed, re-edited, re-scored US version, so it's a bit of a compromise. But the hovercraft climax is still mind-blowing, no matter which version you see...

I just saw some of the fight mid-scene. I could tell it was dubbed, but didn't mind for this as the action was the star of the show.

The original version was a mixture of Cantonese, English and (if I remember correctly) Mandarin, with English dominant, so there wasn't too much dubbing.

BLACK DEATH premiered OAR on BBC 1 last night, and I believ this was the first time ARIZONA RAIDERS (Film 4 today) was screened OAR, too.

Nice to see REIGN OF FIRE getting its OAR 'premiere' on BBC 1 last night, though windowboxed in the manner which completely infuriates me (and no one else, seemingly). Sadly, the film skips over the bit which describes the dragons emerging from hibernation to scorch the earth (which would have made for a much more interesting narrative) and stumbles headlong into a kind of post-apocalypse melodrama, a subgenre I've never found particularly appealing (he said, sniffily). So there.

I think we've covered that before. It's a Freeview SD issue, with them reducing the resolution. It won't happen on Sky or Freeview HD (don't know about Virgin)

Is that censorship or just something that's not in the film and, presumably, in the book?

The wording I used was a bit off. What I meant was, the film jumped over what - for me - would have been a much more interesting story, and simply skipped onto the post-apocalyptic scenario. Nothing was cut - I just wanted to see contemporary London, New York, Paris, etc. battling against fire-breathing dragons, not the post-apocalypse snoozefest, if you see what I mean.

By the way, don't recall if it was a 'premiere', but WONDERFUL LIFE played OAR on 5 USA this afternoon.

Didn't watch THE LOSERS, since it looked like drivel, but I did catch the bit where Chris Evans (the ultra-hot US one, not the ultra-horrific one from the UK) changes his duds in a lift - could that T-shirt have been any tighter?! Nurse, the screens!!

Also, nice to see YEAR OF THE DRAGON and TRUE LIES getting their OAR premiere on TV, along with a second outing for the OAR version of IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH. Sadly, due to my DVR having a brain-fart (long story), I missed all of them, along with THE WHITE RIBBON on BBC 4. Fabulous.

Not.

True Lies was an OAR premiere? Have C4 never shown it before? I know ITV have had it previously, but I didn't realise it hadn't been on C4's channels before.

I saw the first 20 mins or so and there was some nice rear action... (split-surround ) in there.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been on C4 before, although I wouldn't be surprised if some clever-clogs came along and refuted my assertions (ooer, missus). But I'm still pretty sure.
