I'm pretty sure it hasn't been on C4 before, although I wouldn't be surprised if some clever-clogs came along and refuted my assertions (ooer, missus). But I'm still pretty sure.
Not doubting you, I'm just amazed it hasn't been shown properly in all this time. Is it ITV who's only aired it previously?

I know it has been on ITV previously, but as Channel 4 have the deal with Fox, I'd be surprised if it hasn't been on Channel 4 before.

Nah, that one's definitely been shown OAR before.

TCM have shown True Lies in the past and even they've not shown it in its OAR. So well done C4 for doing so.

Compared to Speed 2 on Film 4 at the moment, my recording of the above shows that it's very slightly wider, although it doesn't feel like 2.55:1. I know Lady & The Tramp was, on Xmas Eve, and that looked very narrow.

It's pot luck which version of AS is shown on the C4 platform at any given time. It's one of the great mysteries of the universe.

And I think I'm right in saying Black Shield was an OAR premiere (59 years after it first played in cinemas!!!). And I think you're right in saying this wasn't the full 2.55:1 enchilada.

Ta for the AS info. Didn't realise that.

As for Black Shield, if that was 2.35:1, then Speed 2 was about 2.30:1 as it was only a slight difference but I was really expecting to look for a difference between 2.35:1 and 2.55:1 originally.

The Gauntlet is currently OAR on ITV. This is surely an OAR premiere? They can never be arsed to get old Clint Eastwood films in the correct ratio, usually.

It has indeed been shown OAR a number of times by ITV in the past year. Seems 'pot luck' not only refers to AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS, but just about anything on the commercial channels...

I know it's been mentioned before (as that caused me to set the Digiguide reminder) but The Violent Men is on Film4 at the moment in the OAR of 2.55:1.

I may be wrong ("What, again?!", I hear you all cry), but I think that was the OAR premiere of THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? last night.

Oh, and the BBC screened THE SHAGGY DOG at something like the full 2.39:1 ratio today. It wasn't on the list this week (no excuses - I just forgot), so I thought I'd mention it for the record.

All the previews were configured that way, so it didn't come as too much of a surprise to me. A disappointment, to be sure, but not a surprise.

TWWL is a bit of an odd bird. I've only ever seen a 'full screen' 4:3 version of that film on TV, but it doesn't zoom-up correctly on a 16:9 set, and it doesn't look cropped at either side. FRIDAY THE 13th (1980) is another film where this is the case. I'm assuming the part of the image intended for theatrical projection isn't 'fixed' in the regular way (ie. striped across the centre, or framed at the top of the image), but buried somewhere within the 1.37:1 canvas in a way that cannot be properly replicated without it being configured for 16:9.

I can virtually see thousands of eyes glazing over as a result of these ramblings, so I'll shut up now...

I was hoping it'd still be 2.35:1 as even when they do show a film that way, the trailers are often in 16:9.

Normally, C4 would show such films correctly in their trailers, but their trailers for Skyline and Limitless were both around 1.9:1.

Also, I've just complained to the BBC (for all the good it'll do) because BBC3's print of Lara Croft Tomb Raider is cropped to 16:9 when it's been shown on BBC1 before in 2.35:1, which I remember seeing just before New Year in 2010. The following night, they showed the sequel, but it was in 16:9. I hadn't seen them before that, so I sourced an alternate version for the sequel.
