Have came to the end of my current 18month contract with orange and am going to go for the new iPhone, I have seen the tarriff I want however it is 45 a month (although I may get 10% line rental discount).

My question is really is it worth phoning orange to get the new phone and trying to negociate a bit or will they not be willing to give me it any cheaper because it is the new iphone?

Correct. Don't get your hopes up for the 10% discount to be applied either.

I will be lucky to get one as they dont even have any in stock !

Why do you want that? Is it for the allowances or to drive down the cost of the phone?

Have you considered changing networks?

I have looked at other networks however I need unlimited texts and for me with orange the one with unlimited texts works out £45 a month and £29 for the handset or something ike £40 a month and £80 for the phone. I am strugging to find a good deal at the moment though.

Did you look at the link Matt posted? The Tesco 12 month contracts from £20 per month include unlimited texts. Just a question of whether you are able and willing to pay a lot upfront.

Edit: And depends how many minutes you need. The Orange deals you are looking at are £1,049 or £1,109 over the 2 years. The tesco deal would be £829 over 2 years and as it is a 12 month contract you could reduce the £20 per month by shopping around at the end of the contract.

It would be even cheaper and free(er?) to buy an iPhone 4 on PAYG and use a 30-day sim-only contract,

I know it would work out cheaper with the tesco deal in the long term however I don't want to pay alot upfront at the moment.

Another option if upfront cost really is no object.

Only a mug would pay £45 a month for a personal contract.
